Maxim is one of the aspects studied in pragmatics, a relatively new field in linguistics. It is used in social interactions, especially in the form of conversations. In this study, the researchers conducted maxim analysis in an EFL class. The research data were collected from the WhatsApp-group communication of an online class in the English language education department of a public university in Central Java. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design using pragmatic analysis as its framework. There are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of manner and maxim of relevance. The result shows that there were 22 occurrences of maxim of quantity with 5 cases of flouting of the maxim. Then, 28 occurrences belonged to maxim of quality and the researchers did not find any flouting of the maxim. Next, 26 occurrences were labelled as maxim of relevance with 2 cases of flouting of the maxim. Besides that, 22 occurrences were categorized as maxim of manner with 3 cases of flouting of the maxim. In general, 110 maxim occurrences were identified from 16 conversations recorded in this research.

In learning English the learner must understand the usage of grammar, pronunciation of words, function of using words, etc. Pronunciation of words is one part that can not be separated from learning a language. In English language, the pronunciation of the word is included in the accent part that is used. At Tidar University, Central Java nearly 80 present of students comes from the Java area and uses Javanese accents. In other words, for those who are studying English, they have to adjust the use of accents when they speak English. This research is related to the accents used by students of English education study programs, universities in the TPTEFL class (theory and principle in teaching English as foreign language). Descriptive qualitative methods with data analysis using comparison and contrast or Received Pronunciation (RP) were used in this study. As a result, there were students whose pronunciation of English sounds was not optimal and tended to mix with Javanese accents. In this case, there are five voice-shifting speakers. Bilabial, interdental, velar, alveolar and glottal are the sounds that come out in this discussion.

Abstract

Pronunciation is a significant aspect in communication that associates to how people reveal words for communication. People who speak with the L2 language can be impacted with their L1 in their pronunciation. The accent of L1 tends to dominate L2 in pronouncing a particular word. Thus, it also cannot be easily discharged when someone speaks in L2. This research intends to investigate the impact of L1 in learning L2, especially the Javanese accent, into an English accent. Descriptive qualitative would be utilized as the methodology for constructing this paper. Subsequently, the data would be analyzed using the Comparison and Contrast by Clark (1995) method. Based on the finding, the researchers found 15 words pronounced with Javanese accents. It indicates that L1 can influence pronouncing a word in L2. It will be better if this condition can be conquered. Learning and practicing more are advised in order to retaliate this problem.

This research was conducted at one of the state universities in Indonesia. As a result, the level of fluency which was followed by 16 novice teachers in Asia was classified as good with a presentation of 48.6%. In addition, the researcher also found that the use of filers showed the number 1,215 consisting of 12 fillers words. However, this percentage of numbers shows that the novice teachers are strongly advised to reduce the use of these fillers.
