Abstract

The aims of this study are to investigate the flouting of maxim and analyse the implicature of it. To interpret and analyze the data, the research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data were the utterances produced by Aiman Wicaksono as the Interviewer and Jerynx SID as the Main Guest speaker. The researchers conducted the analysis by identifying the data applying Grice’s Cooperative Principle (1975), categorizing the flouting of maxims as well as investigating the most dominant maxim of floating which occurred in Aiman’s talkshow video. The result of the finding shows that the guest speaker flouted all maxims. The maxim flouted when the speaker responded irrelevant statements, answered to the question but lack of adequate evidence, said too much and or too little information than it is required, and replied something unclear or ambiguous as well as provided unnecessary prolixity. The study discovers that there are 6 occurrences of flouting the maxim of relevance, 4 occurrences of flouting the maxim of manner, 1 occurrence of flouting the maxim of quantity, and 1 occurrence of flouting the maxim of quality. It is found in the research that the most dominant occurrence of flouting maxim is maxim of relevance. It is indicated by the contributions provided by the guest speaker where he does not make the contributions relevant to the questions and context.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the phenomenon of misperception on adult EFL learners at STBA Technocrat. It aims to comprehend the sounds which are frequently misperceived as well as the types of misperception experienced by ten EFL learners in apprehending sound-alike words. This study is descriptive qualitative research that involves ten EFL learners majoring on English literature in semester six. The results show that EFL learners frequently misperceived vowels than consonants. Almost all of the participants experienced the three types of misperception, namely, deafness, mirage, and mutation, except for the one participant who did not experience mirage. The data show that there are several things that are able to influence participants’ perception. The first is the phonetics features of English speech sounds. According to the data, the writers discover that the participants experienced the misperception more towards sounds which have similarities on its phonetics features. The second is the phonological systems between English and Indonesian. The discoveries significantly show that the participants feel confused and are not familiar enough with the sounds that do not exist in their native language. The third is the inserted information. The more information is inserted, the less misperception will occur. The last is the participants’ grades of listening subjects (I-III). However, those grades could not be a benchmark of their ability of speech perception.

Abstract

Selecting joyful communication activities in English learning is indispensably essential. Undoubtedly, the students prefer joyful communication activities regardless the activities use assisted technology or not. Hence, this study sought to explore joyful communication activities based on EFL students' perceptions. It also aims to elicit students' attitudes toward technology-assisted and non-assisted communication activities. This study employed a mix-methods approach to obtain quantitative and qualitative data on 126 students from various non-English departments at a state university in Indonesia. Distributing the questionnaires was employed to obtain the quantitative data. Meanwhile, the qualitative data was obtained through semi-structured interviews. The findings show that three kinds of activities are recognized as the most joyful communication activities, and 12 are the medium of joyful communication activities. Furthermore, the other 16 activities are at a low position (not recommended). Regarding technology-assisted and non-assisted language learning, the student's attitude shows that they prefer to enjoy technology-non-assisted learning activities over technology-assisted activities. However, several activities using technology-assisted learning still gain students' attraction. The study suggests that lecturers should implement recognized joyful communication activities based on students' preferences for enhancing their interest in communication skill mastery.
