Abstract

Apart from being an entertainment medium, literature has also an important role in exposing social problems, as basically literature is born and is intended for the community. Through the disclosure of social problems, the role of literature is increasingly developing, among others, as a medium of teaching, reference, reflection, character building and also criticism. Thus, it is clearly illustrated that literature has multifunctional roles. The message conveyed through literature can be effectively absorbed by the community owing to the entertainment factor. Through the poem “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”, Thomas Gray tells the story of the lives of marginal people, always having to face problems. Through descriptive qualitative research method, referring to social phenomena, supported by sociology of literature approach, the results of the study show that there are three social problems that always arise in the community, especially in the lower class one: poverty, right to get proper education and equality to obtain opportunities in the line of life. These three social problems are closely interrelated so that they become a unification undermining the lives of marginalized people.

The research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method related to social phenomena, in this case the uses of euphemism either in a literary or social text. The results show that out of the 15 data obtained, there are 12 data referred to the function of euphemism as a means of speech refinement (80%), 2 as a means of diplomacy (13%, and 1 keeping something secret (6%).

Abstract

This article is a descriptive survey on the similarities and differences between epistemic and deontic modalities as introduced by Halliday (1994: ) and Downing and Locke (199: 283) . Epistemic modality refers to the use of modality which is based on the speaker's evaluation and judgment in relation to the degree of confidence of the knowledge on the proposition. It functions to comment on and evaluate an interpretation of reality in carrying out speech functions. Deontic modality indicates whether the proposition expressed by a command is obligatory, advisable or permissible according to some normative background such as law, morality, convention, etc. In many instances, the meanings of some modals are relative and complements to each other.  The evidence of some extrinsic modalities such as must, should, may, and can indicates that they may fall under different types; thus, they are at the crossroads; two types of modality which may use the same realization but they goes to different meanings. Keywords:Systemic Functional Linguistics, epistemic modality, deontic modality

Abstract

Abstrak: Penerapan Modalitas Metafora Interpersona pada Ayat-Ayat Suci al-Qur’an. Abstract:This article is the result of a descriptive qualitative research which examine to what extent the theory of Interpersonal Metaphor of mood postulated by Halliday (1994) is relevant to be applied to the verses of the Holy al-Qur’an. The Interpersonal Metaphor applied in this survey covers the three kinds of mood which constitute indicative mood, interrogative mood and imperative mood. This work, however, does not cover the Interpersonal Metaphor of modality. The result shows that some verses of the Holy al-Qur’an use the transference of mood in conveying messages: some indicative moods are expressed in the interrogative and imperative, some imperative moods in the indicative and interrogative, and some interrogative moods in the indicative and imperative. The writer maintains that Halliday’s theory of Interpersonal Metaphor can be justified as an adequate linguistic theory. Keywords: systemic functional linguistics, interpersonal metaphor, al-Qur’an, literature

Abstract

Melengkan is a custom in the plateau of Gayo performed at a wedding expressed in poetical, lyrical or proverbial form.  The study is aimed at identifying the types and uses of figures of speech in Melengkan of   Gayo wedding supported by the concept of figures of speech proposed by Kosasih (2007). The data were collected through observation and a video-recording of the traditional Gayo wedding. as well as interviews with melengkan performers under descriptive qualitative method (Best, 1982). The figures of speech used in Melengkan also reflect the cultural value of Gayo community with points of local wisdom. The findings showed that there were four classifications of figures of speech: Comparison, Substitution, Addition or Amplification, and Omission or suppression used in Melengkan.  The cultural values of Melengkan are for remembrance of local wisdom, warnings from customary philosophy, religion, and also for giving advice and recalling the history and beauty of Melengkan speech. The context of using Melengkan is to perpetuate and reflect cultural values, namely, politeness, respect, speaking softly, friendliness and resoluteness. These findings imply the importance of conserving Melengkan as a part of the Gayo culture in every part of life.

Abstract

The research deals with moral values. Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual’s behavior and choices. Individual’s morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society change. (Harris, 2012). There are two points of moral values analyzed in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both are depicted through the words and actions of the major characters. Hard work is the key to success. Hard work always pays off. Hard work can turn sludge into gold. Hard work starts from where people stop looking for alternatives. (Tollander, 2011); the second is self-confidence, a belief in one’s own ability when doing anything, by viewing things positively and realistically (Albert, 2010). The research is conducted by descriptive qualitative method proposed by Creswell (2010). The results show that there are two points of moral values in the novel. The first is hard work and the second is self-confidence and both of the points are described by the major characters.

Abstract

Abstract This study is about heroism in the novel The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling. There are three points of discussion under this title: giving protection, defending rights and gratitude. Defending rights is associated with heroic deeds. A hero is a random citizen that rises to an occasion and performs an action of superhero proportions. Gratitude implies thankfulness or an appreciation of benefits conferred together with a desire, when practicable, to return those benefits. Defending rights is tied to human rights which are universally applicable to one and all. These are the significant components of heroism. One of the relevant and outstanding modern theories of heroism applied here is proposed by Gibbon (2009) stating that hero is just an average man who fights to solve a common problem in today’s society. The study is conducted with Descriptive Qualitative Method proposed by Haughman (2009) in which he states that Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that focuses on the way people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. Kipling leads children down the jungle path into adventures beyond their day to day imagining and along the way he shows the value of ‘doing for yourself', of 'learning who to trust'. The result shows that heroism is highlighted through the major characters and the conclusive points are some of the significant characters such as Mowgli, Father Wolf, Mother Wolf, Hathi, and Bagheera have done heroic deeds. Their heroism is presented in the forms of giving protection, defending rights and gratitude. Keywords: heroism, human rights, gratitude

Abstract

Abstract The research is about the protagonist’s multi-potentiality with three points of analysis: multi-potentiality in career, in self-discipline and making friend. Multi-potentiality exists when strong genetics and a desire to practice come together to create superior ability. Discipline means order or code of behaviour. Self-discipline refers to the ability to control one’s own feeling is very important. Self-Discipline leads to overcome one’s own weaknesses. Life without Self-discipline is no life. There are many valuable things in life, but friendship may be one of the most important. To live life without the experience of friendship is life without living. Human interaction is a necessity to survival, but developed friendships are essential to the successful well being of anyone. True friendship is a feeling of love, sharing and caring. The theory of multi-potentiality is proposed by Timoty (2008) stating that from knowledge and skills comes multi-potentiality, a set of personal characteristics that enhance one’s ability to achieve expertise in an accelerated manner.  These traits allow one to improve at quicker rates than others in their field that are at the same level of expertise. Descriptive qualitative method by Bickman (2010) is applied to analyze all the data concerning multi-potentiality and conducted to demonstrate association or relationships between things in the world around us in this matter, significant events in the novel and how all the events are molded into a story. The result shows that the protagonist has multi-potentiality in the forms of ability in career, self-discipline and making friends. Keywords: self-discipline, potentiality, career
