Abstract

This article aims to determine the level of cultural resilience in the Bali Aga villages. The level of resilience is measured from the level of morphological changes of the village and the building on site. The study focuses on the development of the village and building morphology on site, resilience level, and factors that shape resilience. The approach used is descriptive qualitative with research locus is in four villages includes Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, Bugbug Village (Regency of Karangasem), Penglipuran Village, and Bayung Gede Village (Regency of Bangli). The result is Tenganan Pegringsingan Village has a very high cultural resilience, Penglipuran Village has high level of cultural resilience, Village Bayung Gede has a low level of cultural resilience, and the lowest level of cultural resilience is Bugbug Village. The most in uential factor on the level of cultural resilience is the internal factors, especially the ability to integrate the traditional management model (social, economic, and culture) and modern management model (tourism). Managing the uniqueness of village assets proves to be an important factor in creating a sustainable tourism village which is shown by the high number of tourist visits continuously.

Abstract

Bali’s capital city of Denpasar has a number of heritage sites, including several buildings, museums and monuments. These sites have yet to be developed optimally as tourist attractions, as evidenced by their small number of annual visitors. This study explores the potential in reutilizing those cultural heritage sites for the development of heritage tourism, and to support the city government’s tour programme. Two interrelated issues discussed here include how the government of Denpasar preserves its cultural heritage, and how it promotes these sites as heritage tourism. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and a literature review employing heritage tourism theory and framing theory. The study presents two packages of heritage tourism tours with a duration of approximately three hours each: the Denpasar Heritage Track (DHT), which starts and finishes at the Bali Hotel, taking in the Puputan Badung Monument, Bali Museum, Jero Kuta Palace, and Maospait Temple; and the Sanur Heritage Track (SHT), which begins and concludes at the Grand Bali Beach Hotel, visiting the Belanjong Heritage, Intaran Market, Bajra Sandhi Monument, and Museum Le Mayeur. The DHTs are expected to increase the number of tourist attractions in Denpasar, contributing to more tourist visits to Bali, especially in its capital city.

Abstract

The socio-cultural life of the Osing in Kemiren Village always interplays with their social activities and interactions, both among local people and travelers who come to visit the village. To accommodate these various activities, the Osing uses communal buildings, such as the Pesantogan Kemangi and two cultural houses: the Sukosari and the Osing. Data from the field reveals that the traditional house is a reference for creating communal buildings. The study aims to disclose the transformation process in spatial patterns and forms that occurs in communal facilities. It discusses a set of combination parts of traditional houses that create communal buildings. A qualitative inquiry was carried out the study with the ethnography approach. The result shows that socio-spatial transformation occurs in a dynamic change of communal activities that affect new architectural models of the public buildings. The transformation includes dimensional spatial patterns and building shapes, reduction, and additional spaces and components. Finally, the study contributes to being a reference for future research in the traditional architecture of the Osing. Both the local government and people work organized in preserving traditional architectural values as a pearl of local wisdom. Therefore, it supports and encourages tourism programs in Kemiren Village towards a socially sustainable community.

Abstract

Kata kunci: fasade, bahan bangunan, ketinngian & bentuk bangunan, efisiensi lahan Abstract This study, which takes place along Legian Corridor in Kuta-Bali, is conducted to achieve three main goals. The first is to identify forms of facade exhibited by various structures existing along this Corridor. Second, to evaluate the conformance of buildings. The key legislation here is Local Regulation No 5 year 2005 regarding Building Codes and Architectural Requirements. Third, in the process to investigate inefficiencies in land use based on building heights. So this study focuses on basic building forms, architectural styles, building heights, and the use of building materials. Descriptive qualitative research methods are used, supported with photographic documentation of all the 129 units being surveyed. Research findings demonstrate that 62 % of these building units do not incorporate Balinese architectural elements as is required; 61 % use various fabricated building materials; and 65.8 % of the units are single storey structures. These conditions indicate violations of building codes and regulations enforced across the Island, as well as inefficient land use within the Legian Corridor where land price is relatively very high. Abstract

Jalan Laksamana is one of three commercial corridors located in the allotment of trade and services in Seminyak Village. As a commercial corridor, one important consideration to be discussed here is the level of visitor comfort. One factor influencing this issue is a ratio of distance (D) over height (H) - (D/H). Calculation on this ratio is seen fundamental since it will determine the spatial impression one may get when standing in a certain position in this corridor. The study is conducted with a descriptive qualitative method and a deductive. It is carried out in three different segments of Jalan Laksamana, namely Segment 1, Segment 2, and Segment 3. This categorization is done based on level of crowd (visitors) who actively use the corridor at a certain timing of the day. The study results show that spatial impressions felt by the crowd when they are standing in these three segments are as follows. First, openness and spaciousness are felt when one stands in segment 1. The D/H ratio within this segment also enables one to observe details a building. Second, the spatial impression felt in segment 2 varies from one spot to another. This largely depends on the physical state of various buildings that one passes by. While in Segment 3, the spatial impression begins to disappear, and building details are invisible. Buildings are seen in relation to their surroundings and the presence of decorative plants has created artificial walls which indeed form a more comfortable space to the crowd.

Abstract

Ubud is a destination for nature, rural and culture-based tourism, where many locally inspired architectural designs for tourist accommodations are found. Cocoa Ubud is for instance owes its architectural existence to a Grya Joglo, a Javanese traditional home. The purpose of this study is to analyze the background of selecting this home as the main architectural form of the Cocoa Ubud, how the joglo has been transformed into accommodation for tourists, and how the community responds to the whole process. This research uses a case study combined with field observations and interviews as methods for data collection. This study finds that the main reason for choosing the grya joglo is due to its classic, nice and likable shape. Accommodation of the architecture of the grya joglo includes the transformation of functions and physical forms as well as adding local decorative elements, such as those used in Balinese traditional homes. In terms of the community’s perception towards the design of Cocoa Ubud, Griya Joglo is welcomed as an accommodated architectural style in the area, especially when it is done in combination with Balinese architectural elements.
