Abstract

This study was aimed at developing the model of translation textbook for teaching English as a foreign language purpose. Therefore, Research and Development (R&D) design was applied to develop the translation textbook for TEFL pedagogical purpose. Moreover, there are four steps to develop the textbook which drafting, peer review ? revise, expert review ? revise and final texbook. The result of study shows the while drafting the content of the textbook were 1) preface, 2) Competences, 3) Presentation and 4) Assessment. Then from the peer review, the contents of the textbook were developed to 1) overview, 2) competencies, 3) orientation, and 4) assessment. From the expert review, the content of textbook were deveoped to 1) overview, 2) competencies, 3) orientation, 4) assessment, and 5) further reading. In conclusion, this model has been developed according to peer and expert views. Therefore, this model of translation textbook is suggested to be used in English Education Program in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study is aimed at developing rubrics of six tasks of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) the subject of the KKNI Industrial Revolution 4.0-based of an English Education Study Program at UNIMED. The objectives of this research are to analyze the rubrics of TEFL subject used at the 3rd semester of English Education Study Program and develop the appropriate KKNI rubrics based on the students? needs. This study is mainly focused on developing Critical Book Report, Critical Journal Report, Engineering Ideas, Mini Research, and Projects rubrics. Research and Development applied in this research and the results show that the rubrics used in the 3rd semester at English Education Study Program is developed through implementing the simplification of R&D. The rubrics indicated low competency for the students after analyzing the questionnaires given. New rubrics are designed to answer the needs of the students. Generally, the existing TEFL rubrics are less relevant for the needs of 3rd semester students. In terms of descriptor rubrics, they are not suitable with the needs of the Lesson Plan and the tasks of TEFL rubrics needed by the students are irrelevant for their needs where the topics or contents used in the course book are useful in the learning outcome of this subject.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for developing a project based learning model for students of the Translation as Profession Course at the English Education Study Program, F This research is a qualitative descriptive research aimed at identifying the needs, opinions and suggestions of the respondents to be used as material for the development of learning models. The instruments used to collect data are questionnaires and interviews. The results of questionnaires and interviews with lecturers state that lecturers need a learning model that can maximize students' learning to translate, lecturers also stated that they needed a learning model guide with clear activity guidelines and accurate assessment guidelines. Students also stated that they needed a learning model that could maximize their translation skills, a learning model that could solve the translation problems they found and a learning model that could maximally motivate students to work in groups.

Abstract

ABSTRACT       The objectives of this research were discovered the kinds of maxims and the dominant maxim; to explain the implication of the dominant maxim and to describe the context of situation in OZ: the Great and Powerful Movie. This research was done on OZ’s utterances because he is the only main character. There were 38 of violated maxims gathered as the data for this research. The descriptive qualitative design was used to analyze the data. The results of the analysis showed that all kinds of maxims were violated: 18 utterances violated maxim of quantity (48%), 2 utterances violated maxim of qualiy (6%), 12 utterances violated maxim of relation (13%), and 6 utterances violated maxim of manner (13). The maxim of quantity is the dominant kind of maxims that was violated by OZ. The implication of this violated maxim is the main character has worried about his life story and he try to covered his truthfull and tricky. The context of situation of this violated maxim is the main character who cannot hide his true story from his friends   Keyword: pragmatics, movie, violated maxim

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims at improving students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph by using Movie Posters. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X SMA Negeri I Galang, which consist of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles which cycle I and cycle II consist of 3 meetings. The instruments for collecting data were qualitative (interview, diary notes, and observation sheet) and quantitative data(writing test). Based on the data analysis, the mean of students’ score in Test I was 56,38 ; for the Test II was 68,05 , and for the Test III was 85. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested by using Movie Posters. The conclusion is that by using Movie Posters improves the students’ achievement in writing descriptive. Abstract

The research was conducted to find out the most dominant learners’ types and to describe their preferences in learning English at the first semester in academic year 2018/2019English Education Study Program, Languages and Arts Faculty , Universitas Negeri Medan. The subject of the study was one class consisting 30 students. The collecting data in the research was by using learner types and preferences questionnaires and observing the learning process in the classroom. The result showed that there were some types of learners in this case. Concrete learner with their preferences are playing game, paying attention to thepictures, watching film is the most dominant one (40.00%). Preference of analytical learners relates to study grammar and English boo, it also relates to find the learners’ own problems (16.67%). Communicative learners (23.33%) with their preferences tend to listen to native speaker, to talk  to friend in English and to watch  English channel in you tube. The learners who are authority-oriented  (20.00%) with their preferences are understanding the teacher’s explanation and writing everything in a notebook.

Abstract

The objective of this endeavor was   to examine the utilization of translanguaging by vocational English teachers in Medan. The emphasis of the study was to identify the English instructor of vocational schools in Medan translated instruction in classroom. This endeavor was implemented by utilizing descriptive qualitative technique. The data of the research were the talk of English teacher instructions of vocational schools in Medan. The data were taken and collected from recorded and videos of the English teacher of vocational schools in Medan. The data were analyzed by applying the inductive model proposed by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014) such as data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The results of the study showed that teacher used English first and continued in using Indonesian language to make the students comprehend  about the conversation in the classroom. Thus, the students are not bored and interest to study English.
