Abstract

Copy pasting has been one of the most frustrating phenomena in our academic life. It is found and ranged from students’ simple formative paper to end-of-course assignment. This article presents semester 1 students’ level of competence in sense making. The data was taken from the documents of students’ power point presentation in Literacy class at English Applied Linguistics State University of Medan. Prior to the presentation, the researcher assigned the students to devide the slides into 5 sections, i.e: introduction, connection, application, reflection, and connection as part of problem-based learning design. The findings show that only 33% of the presentations deliver the information completely in these 5 section, while 67% do not. In connection section, which is assigned for thepresentation of the main content of the article, it is found that only 11% of the presentation deliver complete information about the research which include the background (reasons, problems, objectives) of the research, the techniques in collecting data, the theories used to analyze data, the findings, and the discussion, while 89% do not. Analysis on the content of the slides show that only 33% of the presentation put relevant informations, while the rest (66%) do not. Further analysis of the content of the slides show that 66% of the presentations contains copy paste and only 33% represent the sense making ability. The findings imply that the level of the students’ ability in sense making is very low. It is suggested to find ways to improve this area of literacy skill by empowering all subjects.

Abstract

This study is aimed describe the process of developing higher order thinking skills based poetry text assessment tools. Students need to be trained in their thinking skills by giving students the type of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) that can be used to improve students' thinking skills. This research was conducted in Junior High School Brigjend Katamso II Medan. The result shows that Preliminary studies were research and gathering preliminary information, namely needs analysis. The needs analysis in this research development began by distributing questionnaires to the needs of eighth grade students of Junior High School Brigjen Katamso II Medan, amounted to 35 students and 2 Indonesian language teachers of Junior High School Brigjen Katamso II Medan. The results of the needs analysis were as follows: That 100% of the teachers stated that they knew the assessment tools and 70% knew the steps in preparing the assessment tools. However, only 0% of teachers test their assessment tools before use so that 100% of teachers need a valid, effective and practical assessment tool.

Abstract

This study dealt with Material Assessment and Expert Advice on the Literacy Explanation Text Module at Medan Kudus Christian Middle School Medan, Indonesia. The type of research used is research and development or Research & Development (R and D). This research and development was put forward by Borg and Gall (Sugiyono, 2013: 298). Improvements based on the results of the assessment and advice from experts, then the learning material for writing explanatory text based on literacy after improvement contains the material understanding of explanatory text, characteristics of explanatory text, classification of explanatory texts, explanatory text structures, etc. All material will be arranged in 3 activities, activity 1: explain the definition of explanatory text, explain the characteristics of explanatory text, classify explanatory text, activity 2: examine parts of explanatory text structure, understand the language rules of explanatory texts, determine general ideas of explanatory text, summarizing the explanatory text, activity 3: determining the patterns of explanation text development, understanding the steps for writing explanatory text, writing explanatory text according to the pattern or framework that has been designed. The form of the learning material for writing literacy-based explanatory texts is packaged in size B5 with page number 84 and letter size 12. The front cover of this literacy-based explanatory text module contains the name of the supervisor, the name of the module, illustrations of book drawings and hand drawings in writing positions. For the back cover of the learning material listed a general picture of the contents of the module.

Abstract

Abstract - This article is aimed at describing the ideology of Islam in the Indonesian linguistic politeness system. The population was the emails posted to the mailing list by the members of Indonesian Moslem Society in America (IMSA) and the topic of discussion was Islam. The reason for choosing the topic is that it has potential to reveal expressions of linguistic politeness even as it encourages participation of the members, since it is a topic of interest to everyone. The sample was the email threads triggered by an article entitled ‘Mendeteksi virus liberal’ (Detecting the liberal virus), which followed by four, more-focused topics of discussion derived from the first, chronologically:  Kaca retak (Cracked mirror), Apakah Islam Agama yang Sempurna? (Is Islam a Perfect Religion), Apakah status ke-Islam-an JJ? (Is JJ a good Muslim?); and Memutus Rantai Permusuhan (Breaking the chain of enmity) which cover 57 emails during the period of April 26, 2011 to Mei 16, 2011 and written by 25 members of the IMSA. The method of study was discourse analysis by following the procedure such as: a) Identifying the expressions of disagreement; b) Identifying politeness strategies used; c) Classifying the politeness strategies; d) Identifying dispreferred utterances; e) Classifying dispreferred utterances: and f) Finding out the ideology of Islam in Indonesian linguistic politeness system. The findings show that the politeness strategies used are: a) professing personal-inadequacy on the matter at hand; b) posing questions; c) referring to Al Qur’an/Al Hadits and the precedents set by other pious Muslims; and d) complimenting, honouring, and praying for one another. Dispreferred utterances include: a) those who complimenting themselves; b) those who criticize others, making jokes on others, gossiping others, and making the situation more critical; and c) those who threaten others. The ideology of Islam that lies behind linguistic politeness is: a) the ideology of “watawa shaubil haq watawa shaubish shabr’’, an Arabic phrase meaning ‘Muslims must point one another towards the truth and they must do it patiently’; b) The ideology that implies that linguistic  politeness is not only concerned with the present but is believed to have consequences for the hereafter; and c) The ideology which believe linguistic politeness does not merely concern communication and living in harmony with others, as previous theories suggest, but more importantly it concerns with keeping Muslim brotherhood and with one’s self-actualization as obedient to God. Abstract

Abstract - Speaking politely is one of the pragmatic competencies of  language users. The fact shows that Indonesian children Muslim writers produce impolite utterances through the characters and conflicts they create in the story books published by the Islamic publishers. The impolite utterances are  interpreted as violating the principles of speaking politely as suggested by the Holy Qur’an. A small corpus analysis used in this study is aimed at finding preliminary data on the impolite language used by children for further research, while at the same time showing how the data present children pragmatic incompetence and violation of the Qur’anic principles of being polite. The findings show that affective and coercive impoliteness are presented in the stories. In addition, the study finds the following: a) the issues which drive impolite utterances are competition between siblings, schoolmates, and bad teacher-student relationship; b) the lexicon used include animals, physical appearance, and behavioral assessment. In the level of syntax, declarative, interrogative, and imperative moods are used; c) the Qur’anic principles violated by the impolite utterances are Qaulan Ma’rufa (speaking nicely), Qaulan Karima (speaking honorably), and Qaulan Layyina (speaking softly); and d) the violation of the Qur’anic principles is seen as reflecting the pragmatic incompetence of the characters and the authors in the way that they fail to create dialogues with refinement which reflect principles of Islam in the context of conflict.

Abstract

Kondisi pendidikan bahasa Indonesia di kalangan pelajar dan masyarakat Indonesia pada umumnya ditandai dengan tidak tumbuhnya sikap positip terhadap bahasa Indonesia, belum ditemukannya strategi pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia yang baik,  kurangnya usaha-usaha terutama yang bersifat individual untuk memahiri bahasa Indonesia, belum tumbuhnya kepercayaan diri dengan bahasa Indonesia, dan  sikap merasa tidak perlu mempelajari bahasa Indonesia. Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui Efektivitas Metode Chain Writing Terhadap Kemampuan Menulis Teks Deskripsi Pada Siswa Kelas VII SMP Negeri 37 Medan Tahun Pembelajaran 2019/2020. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimen, yaitu menggunakan metode chain writing kemudian mengetahui efektivitasnya dari hasil belajar siswa.Dari jumlah tersebut ditetapkan sampel sebanyak 70 siswa, yaitu kelas VII A sebagai kelas eksperimen sebanyak 35 siswa dan kelas VII B sebagai kelas kontrol sebanyak 35 siswa.Teknik pengambilan sampel adalah random sampling. Metode yang digunakan adalah quasi eksperimen dengan desain post-test only control group design. Instrumen atau alat pengumpulan data yang digunakan untuk mengetahui hasil belajar siswa adalah tes dalam bentuk penugasan, yaitu menulis sebuah teks deskripsi.Dari hasil analisis data diketahui bahwa metode chain writing lebih efektif digunakan dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskripsi oleh siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 37 Medan. Dalam hal ini diperoleh nilai dengan rata-rata di kelas eksperimen (menggunakan metode chain writing) = 82,18, standar deviasi = 10,52, sedangkan rata-rata di kelas kontrol (menggunakan metode ceramah) = 13,22. Berdasarkan uji normalitas, hasil kelas eksperimen berdistribusi normal, yaitu Lhitung < Ltabel,  (0,142 < 0,156), dan kelas kontrol juga berdistribusi normal, yaitu Lhitung < Ltabel, (0,119< 0,156). Kemudian dari uji homogenitas dinyatakan bahwa sampel berasal dari populasi yang homogen dengan Fhitung <  Ftabel, yakni 1,57 < 1,82. Selanjutnya dilihat dari perhitungan uji hipotesis bahwa hipotesis penelitian ini diterima dengan to>ttabelyaitu 3,20>2,00, maka membuktikan bahwa hipotesis nihil (Ho) ditolak dan hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima. Hal ini membuktikan metodechain writinglebih efektif digunakan dibandingkan metode ceramah dalam pembelajaran menulis teks deskripsi pada siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 37 Medan tahun pembelajaran 2019/2020. Kata Kunci: Metode Chain Writing, Menulis Teks Deskripsi.

Abstract

Pengembangan keberaksaraan akademik (academic literacy) pada dunia perguruan tinggi merupakan pusat pencapaian kesuksesan akademik. Menurut sejumlah penelitian keberaksaraan akademik merupakan landasan untuk mengembangkan kecakapan akademik mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, pengembangan keberaksaraan akademik ini perlu dirajut dalam setiap mata kuliah atau dilaksanakan secara lintas kurikulum. Tulisan ini mengajukan kembali gagasan yang pernah dipromosikan oleh sejumlah peneliti untuk mengembangkan keberaksaraan akademik ini pada perkuliahan terutama pada tahun-tahun awal mahasiswa di perguruan tinggi. Praktik-pratik yang diajukan adalah menelaah beraneka ragam teks, mengkritis teks, mempraktikkan keberaksaraan ganda (paling tidak keberaksaraan dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris), melatih penalaran dan menyusun argumentasi berdasarkan referensi.   Kata Kunci: keberaksaraan kademik, keberaksaraan kritis, aneka ragam teks, tulisan imiah.

Abstract

Keterampilan dasar bahasa atau keterampilan dasar belajar berperan penting dalam mengawal keberlanjutan belajar siswa dan mereka yang lemah dalam hal ini akan mendatangkan masalah bukan saja dalam kegiatan akademiknya tetapi juga dalam melaksanakan pekerjaan sehari-hari, seperti berkomunikasi. Oleh karena begitu pentingnya keterampilan dasar ini maka tulisan ini mengajukan beberapa pendekatan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan dasar dimaksud. Pendekatan-pendekatan tersebut adalah integrasi keterampilan berbahasa, pembelajaran berbasis tugas, pembelajaran TIK dan pembelajaran berdasarkan kontekstual. Keempat pendekatan ini secara terpisah-pisah telah diteliti para ahli dan menyatakan bahwa masing-masing berkontribusi pada peningkatan keterampilan dasar. Di Indonesia penelitian mendalam belumm dilakukan tetapi patut diduga keempatnya sangat berkontribusi untuk peningkatan keterampilan dasar. Kata kunci : Keterampilan dasar, integrasi bahasa, pembelajaran berbasis tugas, pembelajaran TIK dan pembelajaran kontekstual.
