<![CDATA[This study deals with overlaps used in TV program Ini Talk Show on Net TV. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of overlap and describe the effects of overlap in TV program. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data were dialogues in Ini Talk Show special episode on October, 16th 2016 which was taken from YouTube. The findings indicated that there were two types of overlap in ‘Ini Talk Show’ and they were competitive (39,39%) and non competitive (60,60%). <![CDATA[ Peningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran pada siswa SMP IT Daarul Istiqlal dan SMP IT Rahmat melalui kegiatan pendampingan terhadap guru-guru dalam pengembangan sistem pembelajaran online berbasis aplikasi Google Meet bagi guru-guru. Kegiatan penelitian ini dilakukan dengan melakukan proses pendampingan sistem pembelajaran online berbasis aplikasi yang disebarluaskan kemasyarakat khususnya di sekolah-sekolah sebagai pemecah persoalan pengembangan pembelajaran di era pandemi covid-19.Berdasarkan hasil kegiatan didapat simpulan bahwa pembelajaran online dapat meningkatkan proses belajar mahasiswa yang lebih mandiri, kreatif serta inovatif. Apabila materi yang disampaikan pada google meeting dirancang secara detail, dan sistematis, maka pembelajaran bahasa inggris di SMP IT Daarul Istiqlal dan SMP ITRahmat Marindal I Kecamatan Patumbakdapat meningkatkan kualitas pengetahuan siswa. Kendala yang dihadapi dalam proses pembelajaran online ini dapat dilakukaan dengan kegiatan sosialisasi lebih intens diantara guru, guru dengan siswa. Selain itu, mencari solusi alternatif dalam menghadapi kendala diantaranya siswa mencari alternatif dengan memakai modem internet pribadi, warnet, atau dengan menggunakan aplikasi wifi.id berbayar yang telah disediakan oleh pihak sekolah guna meminimalisir kendala. Secara umum, pembelajaran berbasis online ini manarik, menantang kemandirian siswa dalam belajar dan sebagai solusi terbaik di massa pandemic covid-19 yang menuntut physical distancing.]]>

<![CDATA[This paper aims to compare and analyze the five poems that written by five different poets to find the implicature in all that poems and try to find the literal meaning behind every poem that the writer took as their data. And for this research, the writer comes with the qualitative study with the descriptive method to analyze this research, where with this method the writer attempt to describe and interpret the object of the research because the data has presented descriptively. The analysis of this research has been done with read the poem thoroughly to find the implicature from the poem then describing how the types represented in each poem, and explaining the significant differences among the five poems.]]>

<![CDATA[This research was aimed to identify and describe the process, as well as the problems confronted by teachers and students in learning to speak using debate techniques at the Second Grade Students of SMA N 1 Sumbul. The methodology used in this research was descriptive qualitative. This research used triangulation technique in collecting the data, consists of observations, interviews and questionnaires. After analyzing the data, there are three result points. First, the process of teaching and learning to speak through debate techniques at SMA N 1 Sumbul is not going too well because there are still some problems confronted by both teachers and students. Second, the teacher encountered several difficulties in teaching speaking out through debate technique, such as educators continuing to use their local tongue and the teacher being unable to manage a class that was overcrowded and necessitating extensive preparation to ensure that learning with this debate technique ran smoothly. Third, students' difficulties in learning to speak via debate approach included being unable to express anything in their main language, needing more preparation time to build their statements when building the case, and being unable to manage their emotions when delivering opinions. <![CDATA[This study is a Research and Development (R & D) focused on a set of task-based supplementary English reading materials of descriptive texts. The aims of this study is To develop task-based supplementary English reading materials focusing on descriptive texts for Seventh Grade Junior High School Students. The subjects were Grade Seven students of SMP Al-Washliyah 8 Medan Class VII-6. This research used quantitave research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected by following the research stages were conducting needs analysis, writing a course grid, designing the first draft, getting expert judgment, and revision. This research was conducted by following Masuhara (in Tomlinson, 1998) research design with several modifications. The result of this research showed that the supplementary reading materials that students need were materials which related to their real life and contain the structure and function of the texts, vocabulary and grammar lesson and interesting reading activities which allow them to interact with the teacher and other students. The product of this study was a set of task-based supplementary English reading materials focusing on descriptive texts for Grade VII students of Junior High School entitled “Reading Practice‟. It consisted of three units. Each unit of the developed materials consisted of 20-25 reading activities. Based on the data from the expert judgement, the mean value of all aspects of the three developed units fell into the range of 3.25 ≤ x ≤ 4. It means that the developed materials were categorized as “Very Good”. Thus, it can be concluded that the task-based supplementary English reading materials have been appropriate for Grade VII students of Junior High School.Keywords: English Reading Materials, Masuhara research design, Teaching Reading]]>

<![CDATA[The objective of this study was to develop English reading materials based on the students of Software Engineering needs for the eleventh grade students at SMKN 9 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing materials, validating, revising (final product). The subject of the study was grade eleventh of SMKN 9 Medan. The data were gathered by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to XI RPL 3 consists of 24 students to get the students’ need. To collect the data of the research, conducting interview to English teacher and two types of questionnaires were used as the instruments. The developed reading materials were validated by two experts which are the average scores for the analytical exposition material (4.65 and 4.7) and for the explanation text (4.65 and 4.6) show that the reading materials are valid and suitable to use for the eleventh grade students of software engineering program. Based on the results of the expert judgment, the developed materials were considered appropriate, which was very good.Key words: Development, Reading Materials, Software Engineering.]]>

<![CDATA[This study aimed at describing the use of REAP technique and investigating the reasons of using REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text grade eleven at SMAN 17 Medan in the academic year of 2019/2020. This study was descriptive qualitative conducted that taken one English teacher of SMAN 17 Medan. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of teaching reading analytical exposition text. The findings of this study showed that the teacher implemented four steps of REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text. The teacher did every step with a good performance. The reasons of using REAP technique in teaching reading analytical exposition text were a fresh way to think to understand a text easily, encouraged students to think critically on the issues discussed, developed reading and writing skill, and also vocabulary. It also found a reason that students were easily invited to explore their ideas on the issues discussed. The findings of this study revealed that REAP technique contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill.Keywords: REAP technique, reading, analytical exposition text.]]>

<![CDATA[The aim of this study were to figure out the dominant category used by teacher and students and the types of verbal interaction used by teacher and students in learning English at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai. The methodology of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher took two classes (XI-IPA2 and XI-IPS2). The researcher used observational tally sheet, matrix, and audio recording as the instruments for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS). The data analysis showed that the teacher more dominant in the classroom interaction than the students. The percentage of teacher talk in class XI-IPA2 was 74.03%, in class XI-IPS2 was 65.60%. The dominant category used by teacher in class XI-IPA2 was lecturing by 31.78%, in class XI-IPS2 was also lecturing by 24.73%. The percentage of student talk in class XI-IPA2 was 20.16%, in class XI-IPS2 was 26.88%. And the dominant category of student talk was student talk-response with 15.11% in class XI-IPA2 and 23.65% in class XI-IPS2. <![CDATA[This study aims to analysis students responding assessment in analytical exposition text. The purpose of this research is to find out how students respond to understanding analytical exposition text. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMK SWASTA PAB 12 Percut sei tuan. The research design of this study was qualitatve research.The instruments for collecting data were assessment or questionnaire, observation, and interview. The data were gathered by administering interview to the teacher English and distributing questionnaire to the eleventh grade students. This study were the assessment of students’ responding at in the Eleventh grade students of SMK SWASTA PAB.Students responding occurs when a students make a response by answering questions or responding in a variety of ways that communicates the students’ understanding of the content being taught during the lesson. The researcher can concluded that there was 17 students who know and want respond to the feedback that the teacher gives to students in analytical exposition text material. Conversely there was 8 students who was unable to respond to the material because the ability to received and absorb analytical exposition material is not easy for them, so teachers must patiently guide and applied analytical exposition learning material to students who was poor response and absorbing abilities.65% of students can quickly respond to analytical exposition material used informal assessment methods and 35% of students can answer questions given by the teacher to students.Key Words: Qualitative Research, Writing, Assessment, Students’ Responding, Analytical Exposition Text.]]>

<![CDATA[The aim of this study was to develop students worksheet for reading comprehension of descriptive text using Kahoot! for tenth grade students at SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan. This study was categorized as Research and Development (R&D) through six stages: gathering data and information, conducting need analysis, designing first form of media, validating by experts, revising media and final product. The subject of the study was the tenth grade students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan with the instruments of collecting data were interview and questionnaires. The result of the study was platform Kahoot! to be used as stusents worksheet for reading comprehension of descriptive text. In the percentage form, the average score of experts’ validation in term of content aspect was 94.2%, presentation aspect was 94%, language aspect was 97% and graphic aspect was 100%. These scores were categorized “Very Good”. It means the developing students worksheet for reading comprehension by using Kahoot! was appropriate for tenth grade students of SMA Dharma Pancasila Medan.Keywords: Descriptive text, students worksheet, Kahoot!]]>
