Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types and the function of sarcasm used in komiknyebelin as the source data account of instagram. The data of this study were taken from the content of komiknyebelin account since August 2018 until July 2019 which randomly selecting comics that found sarcasm in the comics. In analyzing the data, the researcher was conducting by using qualitative method. The result showed the types and the function of sarcasm used in komiknyebelin account. The data were analyzed by using Lamb’s theory about the types of saracasm and Leech’s theory facing the illucotionary functions to find the sarcasm function in the content of komiknyebelin. The researcher found 4 types of sarcasm in the content of komiknyebelin account, they were: brooding sarcasm (2 data), polite sarcasm (2 data), obnoxious sarcasm (12 data) and raging sarcasm (2 data). And the researcher also found 2 types of sarcasm functions, they were collaborative function (8 data) and conflictive function (10 data) from the 18 data comic that used sarcasm found in the content of komiknyebelin account. Keywords:  Instagram, Komiknyebelin, Sarcasm Functions, Sarcasm Types

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the structures of personalities, the driving forces behind behaviors, the interweaving roles of the characters in a videogame titled Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions and how those roles affect the overall literary works. The type of this research is qualitative. The .iso, script as well as the documentation videos of Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions are the sources of the data. The data are the utterances and actions which conveys the characters’ perceptions in a particular physical and social environments, their needs, wishes, intentions, memories of past events and their imagining about future, their ways to overcome inferiority, the future they envision, their goals and expectations. The writer finds that the seemingly opposite characters actually share similar goals: to fight the imbalances, particularly the social disparity between noble and commoner and to make the world a better place. Both characters start to differ because of their differences in backgrounds which lead one to seek power while the other one abandoned power. Each characters have their own assigned roles based on the application of Jung’s archetypes, and they share similar roles. But, while most a character’s roles changes to the shadow sides (the negative sides) because of the situations that occured, the other character retains the positive qualities of the archetypes. Both characters become the antithesis of each others and their interweaving roles lead to a deeper and complex interpersonal conflicts, a more interesting story, as well as a great emotional impacts.Keywords: Archetypes, Characters, Characterizations, Driving Forces, Electronic Literature,  Final Fantasy, Literary Works, Psychological Approach, Structure of Personality, Videogame

Abstract

This study focused on finding out the cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. The objectives of this study were : (1) to find out the types of cultural values in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, (2) to find out the dominant types that used in song lyrics Endeng-endeng and (3) how the realization of the cultural values in wedding ceremony of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. There were 18 data of cultural values that were taken from song lyrics Endeng-endeng transcriptions. The findings of this research were : (1) There were nine cultural values of Batak that found in song lyrics Endeng-endeng, that contained kinship (16.7%), religion (16.7%), hagabeon (extended family)(11.1%), hasangapon (respect) (11.1%), hamoraon (wealth) (5.5%), hamajuon (modernization) (11.1%),  patik dohot uhum (rules and laws) (11.1%), pangayoman (nurture) (5.5%) marsisarian (conflict) (11.1%). (2) The most dominant types of cultural value was kinship and religion (16.7%). (3) The realization of cultural values of song lyrics Endeng-endeng of Mandailing society in North Labuhanbatu Regency was described by interview the informants that understood about Endeng-endeng. The meanings in song lyrics Endeng-endeng were the advices for the groom that should be applied by them in their life after got marriage.Keywords: cultural values, Endeng-endeng, song lyrics, wedding ceremony of Mandailing society

Abstract

The research was focused on the topic about Women’s attitudes toward gender discrimination they face in the movie with title ‘7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita’. This study was aimed at identify the kinds of gender discrimination faced in the movie and the attitudes of women towards gender discrimination they face in the movie. This study was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was taken from 7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita (2010) script movie. The data are collected by using documentary technique. Instrument for collecting the data is using documentary sheet. The technique for analyzing the data is descriptive qualitative research. The results of this research was types of genders discriminatio can found in the movie are Marginalization, Subordination, Stereotype, Violence and Workload. The women’s attitudes toward five kinds of gender discrimination they face are different based on the type of attitudes, they are Cognitive responses, Affective responses and Conative responses.Keywords: Gender Discrimination, Attitudes, Movie.

Abstract

Movie is a work of art as a communication medium that can convey a message to many people. This paper contains some important information related to the understanding of Chinese culture towards Mulan as a strong woman through a movie called Mulan, the 2020 version directed by Niki Caro. This study aims to analyze, interpret and represent the gender of the main character in the movie, namely Mulan, through a semiotic approach guided by Pierce's theory. In addition, it has also been briefly explained the storyline of the movie, especially the focus on Mulan. The research method used by the researchers was a qualitative discourse analysis approach and was developed textually. This includes analyzing the discourse text contained in Mulan's movie based on her character as feminine under gender code and then connecting it with social life, analyzing body language or cultures conveyed by each scene that can describe Mulan's character as a great woman. Then, the data source has been collected online, that is from the internet and this article is a non-participant. Based on the movie's story, there are 10 valid data that have been captured as evidence of social impact. The data was analyzed through the Mulan movie, which has a duration of 1 hour 55 minutes, with the themes of adventure, drama, action. Meanwhile, findings and discussion was focused on analyze the movies based of the characters, gender and based of semiotics approach with showing some evidences in the form of pictures of the scene that showed that the women gender in the Mulan movies.This article concluded that gender representation in the Mulan movie 2020 is a serious problem that occurs in the socio-cultural environment of society, so the use of the Semiotics approach helps in analyzing the gender context in the movie.

Abstract

This article aims to clarify the semiotic meaning in Lapo Batak ornaments in Kuala Tanjung, Batubara Regency. The data of this study were taken from the interpretation from Batak Toba people who live in Kuala Tanjung, Batubara Regency is located in North Sumatera Indonesia in interpreting their cultural symbols. In clarifying the data, the writer was conducted by using qualitative method. The result showed the semiotic meaning and how the cultural values were realized in Lapo Batak ornaments. The dates were analysed by using Roland Barthes’ order of signification theory; denotation, connotation, and myth to emphasize the interaction between the sign with the personal cultural experience of the viewers, and the interaction between convention in the sign with the conventions experienced and expected by viewers. The writer found that the interpretations of the personal cultural experience from the viewers were still far from the Batak Toba convention (myth) in interpreting the ornaments.

Abstract

The existence of the plot in the film makes a big contribution in the form of success in delivering the story content of the film. This is what can make the film more interesting because of the plot in a film. The Call is a 2020 South Korean thriller film directed by Lee Chung-hyun, starring Park Shin-hye and Jeon Jong-seo. Based on the 2011 British and Puerto Rican film The Caller, two women live in different times. Seo-Yeon (Park Shin-Hye) lives in the present day and Young-Sook (Jun Jong-Seo) lives in the past. They connect with one phone call. Researchers are interested in researching this film because it has an interesting and quite complex plot line and this film provides an ending that invites the audience to think. Thus, this study aims to analyze the plot contained in the film the call and also to analyze the plot errors that exist in this film. This research method uses qualitative analysis with a descriptive approach, aims to describe and explain the phenomenon of the object of research to obtain results and conclusions. The data of this research are in the form of sentences, dialogues, and pictures in the film The Call. The results of this study indicate that the plot used in this film is a forward plot. Also, this film uses the "Butterfly Effect paradox" and “Grandfather paradox”. Researchers also found plot errors in this film, namely this film can change the past that has been recorded in the future. And the past antagonist can communicate with her future self at the same time. The author hopes that the results of this study will be useful for further researchers who are interested in literary works in the form of films, especially in the plot.

Abstract

This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. It was concerned with the description of the data in the form of utterances prodused by the main characters in Finding Ohana (2021) Movie. In conducting this research, the researcher (1) found out the types of politeness strategy in Finding Ohana (2021) Movie. (2) described the realization types of politeness strategies in Finding Ohana (2021) Movie. (3) explain the reason why the types of politeness strategies using in Finding Ohana (2021) Movie. The data of this research was the utterances by the main characters in the movie, that was English subtitle. In the application of the politeness strategies, the Finding Ohana (2021) Movie utterances mostly applied Bald on Record strategy. The result showed that most dominant type of politeness strategies is Bald on Record strategy (43,3%). Consequtively the percentage of Positive Politeness strategy was (36.1%). The percentage of Negative Politeness was (14,4%). The lowest percentage of politeness strategy is Off Record with (6.2%). The reason why the types of politeness strategies using in the Finding Ohana (2021) movie, instead of each politeness strategies has sub-strategies which explained those utterances contained politeness strategies and also influenced by payoffs and sociological variables

Abstract

This research discussed about Feminismin both selected novels PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color Purplewhich aimed at finding out the types offeminism, reason why can the figure ofwomen struggle of feminisms and the roleof women in both of the selected novels.This research was based on Tong’s theory.This research was conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The datawere taken from both selected novelswhich have feminisms, they arePerempuan Berkalung Sorban and TheColor Purple Novel. The findings showedthat there were 28 data, 24 data in types offeminism in Perempuan Berkalung Sorbanand The Color Purple Novel.The dominanttypes from both the novels is LiberalFeminisms in Perempuan BerkalungSorban Novel, because the first characterfrom Perempuan Berkalung Sorban Novelis Annisa who feels unfair treatment shereceives from her family;and there were 4data in the role of women in domesticsector can struggle in PerempuanBerkalung Sorban and The Color PurpleNovel.
