Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the correlation between exercise programs with lung function and swimming achievements of young adult athletes. Planning an exercise program by considering physiological stimulus encourages the body to adapt and improve lung function and maximize their performance. This is observational research used retrospective cohort study design. Sample in this study was selected based on the required criteria, 31 swimming athletes from the Indonesian Swimming Association of South Sulawesi and Swimming Club of Hasanuddin University, which are divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of the exercise program periodization that was implemented in the last 3 months. Data obtained through questionnaires and direct lung function examination using a spirometer. Based on the results of data analysis, it is known that there is a significant correlation between the exercise program and lung function, including Vital Capacity (VC), Force Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume 1 second (FEV1) where the value of p <0.05. There is also a significant correlation between exercise program and swimming achievement where the value of p <0.01.

Abstract

Background: Pneumoconiosis occurs almost in entire worldwide. Pneumoconiosis had threatened cement workers. Serologic abnormalities had found in pneumoconiosis. Surfactant Protein A (SP-A) levels increased in silica-exposed workers. Surfactant Protein A (SP-A) may be a helpful biomarker for the early diagnosis of pneumoconiosis, but it has not yet been studied in Indonesia.Methods: The design of this study was observational with cross-sectional. A sampling of cement-exposed workers was done by consecutive sampling. The subjects were 88, approach population of 67 cement exposed workers from September 2017 – March 2018 and 17 healthy people as control. The serum level of SP-A was measured by the ELISA method. Cement exposed workers is a worker in the production area and workers in the quarry area.Results: The total number of research subjects met the criteria was 67, and the control subjects were 21. The mean serum SP-A level in the study subject group or the exposed group was 6.02 ng/ml, and the mean SP-A level in the control group was 4.50 ng/ml. The difference in SP-A levels between the exposed and control groups was different but not significant, with value of P=0.084.Conclusion: SP-A levels in the exposed and control groups were different but not statistically significant.

Abstract

Lung cancer is the leading cause of mortality for all cancer globally and in Indonesia. In Indonesia, lung cancer contributes to 12.6% of death of all cancer, making it the number one cause of cancer death, and 8.6% of all cancer incidence in 2018, behind breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer. The total cases per year are expected to almost double from 30,023 in 2018 to 54,983 cases in 2040. Smoking is among the risk factors for lung cancer, after occupational/environmental risk factors, history of lung fibrosis, and family history of cancer. There was a tendency of younger smokers in Indonesia and increased lung cancer incidence and prevalence in the younger population. The median age of lung cancer in Indonesia was younger than in any country, probably due to the younger age of smoking, early onset of carcinogens, asbestos use, and environmental. Lung cancer screening is a voluntary measure to detect lung cancer in the earliest stage, to find cancer at curable disease before symptoms appear in high-risk individuals. Lung cancer early detection is strategies to find cancer earlier after symptoms appear (cough, hemoptysis, dyspnea, chest pain). Low-dose computerized tomography of the thorax (LDCT) screening has been known to reduce lung cancer mortality compared to a chest x-ray (CXR). This Indonesian Society of Respirology consensus statement was aimed to give recommendations on lung cancer screening and early diagnosis in Indonesia.
