Abstract

This article was written to review a dictionary named Cambridge Advanced Learner?s Dictionary (CALD) especially the entries start from actor to adhere. In order to fulfill the readers? need, some words need to be deleted, revised, and added based on the ways of the dictionary provide the meaning of the words or the ways of the words combine with other words. The consideration of word deletion, revision, and addition was also based on the frequency of the words used by people in in English speaking countries provided by COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English) and BYU (Brigham Young University). There are three entries should be deleted, 17 entries should be revised, and two entries should be added to CALD.

Abstract

Learning English in primary schools needs to be supported by books and reading materials that are appropriate for the child's age level. If children's reading materials are adjusted to their age, children will not have difficulty in understanding their reading text. The purpose of this study was to find out the number and types of English words that were produced by elementary school-age children as the first step to map children's mental lexicon as a reference for the teacher to choose reading text in learning English at school or home. It was descriptive and qualitative research in which data was taken from elementary school students' English writing. The results show that the 1st grade of elementary school students produced 45 words in three different topics namely animals, drinks, and activities. The fourth grade of elementary school students produced 130 until 600 words in writing a fiction story and their total vocabulary were 636 words. The fifth grade of elementary school students produced 1400 words in some different topics namely daily routine, pets, hobbies, like, and dislike. In conclusion, the higher level of education the children have, the more words they produce. The influence of Indonesian and Arabic in students’ composition indicates that Indonesian and Arabic are active languages ??that they use so that it can significantly affect the production of the English they are learning. Verbs that they produce imply that they can understand general and specific concepts possessed by each word.

Abstract

The covid-19 virus pandemic has made the world of education change the learning system, from face-to-face learning to online learning. This study aims to develop an online assessment to test students' abilities on the material that has been given online. Interviews with English teachers and collecting documents from the internet are data collection techniques used in this study. Some of the steps that are taken to obtain the results of online assessment development on grade 7, 8, 9 are: (1) The process of reviewing the curriculum and textbooks so that the scope of the questions is determined, namely core competence and basic competence for grades 7, 8, 9. (2) Making questions based on the grid using the Proprofs application. (3) Making an answer key. The making of this answer key is carried out simultaneously with the second stage. The weaknesses and strengths of Proprofs used in creating and developing online assessments are the results of this study.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membangun sikap spiritual anak usia dini melalui kegiatan pembelajaran yang menyenangkan menggunakan media boneka kain flanel dan stik (Nelstik) pada 8 anak usia dini yang belum terbangun sikap spiritualnya seperti mengucapkan dan menjawab salam, serta berdoa sebelum dan setelah melakukan kegiatan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (Action research). Hasil dari penelitian tindakan kelas ini menunjukkan bahwa dengan menggunakan media Boneka kain Flanel dan Stik (Nelstik), guru dapat memberikan semangat kepada anak usia dini dalam membangun sikap spriritual, dengan konsep pembelajaran yang menyenangkan bagi anak usia dini serta memacu kreativitas guru dalam pengembangan media pembelajaran.

Abstract

Foreign language learners usually learn a foreign language using their first language. There has been limited report on study discussing the ability of foreign language learners to learn a foreign language using their learned foreign language. This study employed an autobiographical narrative inquiry based on the experience of three multilinguals. This study aimed to find out their strategies in learning foreign languages and the factors affecting in learning foreign languages. This study found that there were two Indonesian multilinguals that learn Japanese using their limited ability in English. The other multilingual learn English at school and learned Dutch at a language course. The results proved that there are factors such as learner characteristics, linguistic factors, learning processes, age and acquisition, instructional variables, context, purpose, motivation, attention, attitude, study habit, self-concept, and student aptitude affecting learners in learning foreign languages. This study gives little contribution to our understanding on the strategies that might been applied by a foreign language learner to learn a new foreign language.

Abstract

This study focused on the designing of English lexicogrammar materials that incorporate microlearning for junior high school students, especially 7th graders. The study aimed to develop effective instructional materials that enhance students' understanding of lexico-grammatical concepts through microlearning. A design-based research methodology was employed in this study in three phases (Richey & Klein, 2014b), namely analysis, design, and development. Information related to existing materials was gathered; the product model was planned; and the prototype design was then developed. Data was existing learning materials collected from teachers after they were interviewed and filled out a questionnaire. This study also utilized qualitative content analysis to examine a set of existing learning materials consisting of textbooks, PDFs, and ppt slides. The findings showed that the existing materials are not microlearning-based. The design of learning materials in lexicogrammar integrated with the listening skill named medium of microlearning objects was in the form of two podcasts, one audiobook, and some interactive games in integration with listening skill.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini merupakan lanjutan dari kegiatan tahun sebelumnya yang diadakan oleh Program magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Jakarta dalam upaya membantu guru-guru bahasa Inggris di wilayah Agam Barat dan Agam Timur, Sumatera Barat dalam mengembangkan pembelajaran berbasis microlearning. Kegiatan pendahulu yang diadakan pada tahun 2022 menghasilkan pemahaman guru akan pembelajaran mikro (microlearning) dan kemungkinan penerapan pembelajaran mikro di pelajaran Bahasa Inggris mereka. Sebagai tindak lanjut dari kegiatan itu, kegiatan kali ini bertujuan untuk membantu guru-guru tersebut mengembangkan pembelajaran mikro dan mendigitalkan obyek materi ajar mikro (MeMO). Mempertimbangkan jarak geografis yang relative jauh antara Jakarta – Agam, kegiatan dilakukan secara virtual menggunakan zoom meeting. Kegiatan dihadiri oleh dua puluh lima orang guru dari MGMP Agam Barat dan Agam Timur. Dibandingkan kegiatan sebelumnya, ada penurunan jumlah peserta dikarenakan kendala pekerjaan dan hambatan jaringan internet. Diskusi kelompok terpumpun ini dipimpin oleh lima orang dosen dan dibantu oleh delapan orang mahasiswa yang memiliki pengetahuan memadai akan pembelajaran mikro terutama untuk pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berdasar Kurikulum Merdeka yang meliputi enam keterampilan – menyimak, berbicara, membaca, memirsa, menulis, dan mempresentasikan. Dikarenakan keterbatasan waktu guru untuk mengikuti sejumlah pelatihan, kegiatan ini dilengkapi dengan konsultasi dan bimbingan secara daring melalui Google Classroom. Dengan cara ini diharapkan guru dapat tetap mengembangkan kemampuan dan profesionalismenya di samping melakukan tugas utamanya, mengajar. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan saran dan harapan peserta untuk mendapatkan pelatihan secara tatap muka agar mereka dapat berkonsultasi terkait pengembangan obyek materi ajar mikro, mulai dari dekonstruksi capaian pembelajaran yang ada di kurikulum, memilih dan memilah obyek materi ajar mikro, hingga mendigitalkannya.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this community service activity is to assist English teachers for junior high schools (SMP) in West and East Agam Districts, West Sumatra, to be able to digitize English-speaking learning materials by incorporating microlearning-based critical thinking skills into Virtual Reality (VR). This activity is carried out through training and workshops, which are carried out online through Zoom meetings and Google Classroom. The activity was carried out for 2 hours online through a Zoom meeting and 4 meetings through Google Classroom during August 2023. The participants in the activity were 25 English teachers who are members of the Subject Teacher Consultation (MGMP) for Middle School in Agam Regency. The presenters were five lecturers from the Master of English Education study program, Faculty of Languages and Arts Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The training materials cover the independent curriculum concept, microlearning, critical thinking, VR and speaking skills which are tailored to the objectives of teaching English at the junior high school level. This activity generates understanding and skills in making speaking learning material products medium microlearning Objects (MeMos) infused with microlearning-based. Abstrak Tujuan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah untuk membantu guru Bahasa Inggris sekolah menengah pertama (SMP) di Kabupaten Agam Barat dan Timur, Sumatera Barat, mampu melakukan digitalisasi rancangan pembelajaran berbicara Bahasa Inggris terinfusi keterampilan berpikir kritis berbasis microlearning ke dalam Vitual Reality (VR). Kegiatan ini dilakukan melalui pelatihan dan lokakarya, yang dilaksanakan secara daring (online) melalui zoom meeting dan Google Classroom. Kegiatan dilaksanakan selama 2 jam secara daring melalui zoom meeting dan 4 pertemuan melalui Google Classroom selama bulan Agustus 2023. Peserta kegiatan adalah 25 orang guru Bahasa Inggris yang tergabung dalam Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) SMP Kabupaten Agam. Pemateri adalah lima orang dosen dari program studi Magister Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Materi pelatihan mencakup konsep kurikulum merdeka, microlearning, berpikir kritis, VR dan keterampilan berbicara yang disesuaikan dengan tujuan pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di tingkat SMP. Kegiatan ini menghasilkan pemahaman dan keterampilan dalam membuat produk materi pembelajaran berbicara medium microlearning Objects (MeMos) terinfusi keterampilan berpikir kritis berbasis microlearning ke dalam VR.

Abstract

Abstract This study focused on the teachers’ responses on the training of designing English lexicogrammar materials that incorporate microlearning and collaboration skills for seventh grade of junior high school students. The study aimed to investigate 24 junior high school teachers’ answers on the questionnaire given after a one-day training organized to support teachers in designing effective instructional materials that enhance students' understanding on lexico-grammatical concepts and promote collaboration within the classroom. A qualitative study was conducted to capture what the teachers think about the training. Data was collected from teachers by filling out a questionnaire. The findings showed that the teachers need more training on the designing microlearning materials applied to teach students using Merdeka curriculum. Some obstacles emerged because of the poor internet connection. Moreover, some suggestions have been given for improving the quality of the training. Abstrak Penelitian ini berfokus pada respon guru terhadap pelatihan perencanaan materi ajar leksikogramatika bahasa Inggris yang berbasis pembelajaran mikro dan terinfusi keterampilan kolaborasi untuk siswa kelas 7 Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki jawaban dari 24 guru SMP pada kuesioner yang diberikan setelah pelatihan satu hari yang diselenggarakan untuk mendukung guru dalam merancang bahan ajar yang efektif yang meningkatkan pemahaman siswa tentang konsep tata bahasa dan kemampuan keterampilan kolaborasi siswa di dalam kelas. Sebuah studi kualitatif dilakukan untuk mengetahui apa yang dipikirkan para guru tentang pelatihan tersebut. Data dikumpulkan dari guru dengan mengisi angket. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa para guru membutuhkan pelatihan lebih lanjut tentang desain materi ajar pembelajaran mikro yang diterapkan untuk mengajar siswa menggunakan kurikulum Merdeka. Beberapa hambatan muncul karena koneksi internet yang buruk dan beberapa saran telah diberikan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelatihan.
