Abstract

This thesis is an analysis of the Play Fairview (2018) by Jackie Siblies Drury. The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue of instilling negative stereotypes. It is also intended to expose how the contribution of fictional elements (character, setting, plot/conflict, and stage direction) in revealing the issue of instilling negative stereotypes. This analysis is done through text-based and context-based interpretation which are related to the concept of The Fact of Blackness by Frantz Fanon in his book Black Skin, White mask. The result of this analysis shows white has instilled the negative stereotypes toward black by circulating and perpetuating through the media that black is forever inferior.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the ways of using concept mapping strategies for enhancing Junior High School students’ reading comprehension in reading report text. Many students face difficulties in reading, like problems in their reading comprehension, cannot interpret what they read, and make the connection between what they read and what they have already known because they are unable to accurately understand written materials. Concept mapping can solve these problems by mapping their ideas, comprehending any scientific text especially for report text, analyze reading text easily, and make of conclusion from the text in a structural way. So, the concept mapping strategy is suitable for enhancing students’ reading comprehension and solve the problem.

Abstract

This article discusses about the use of One Minute Life Story in teaching speaking to senior high school students. Speaking is one of the four main skills in language that should be mastered by the students especially in English. To support and increase students’ speaking ability, teacher can use One Minute Life Story as an activity in the classroom. One minute life story is a part storytelling activity but it has the difference which is limited by the time. In this paper, the way of using it may be different because English is a foreign language in Indonesia. So that, one minute time is extended and become five minutes, by using One Minute Life Story it is expected that students can practice and increase their speaking ability with a different way.

Abstract

An article entitled “An Analysis of English Teachers’ Code Switching and Code Mixing in Classroom Instructions at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP” aims at determining codes mostly used by the English teachers and the functions of classroom code-switching and code-mixing. To meet the need of this research, the subject of this research was 3 English teachers at SMA Pembangunan Laboratorium UNP. The data of this research was the English teachers’ utterances which contain code-switching (CS) and/or code-mixing (CM). The instrument used was an audio-video recorder which recorded the classroom conversation. To know the codes mostly used by the English teachers, the data were analyzed to see the what codes occur in teachers’ utterances. Moreover, the data were analyzed using 3 categories of functions of classroom CS and CM proposed by Ferguson (2003) to determine the functions of classroom CS and CM. The results showed that the code mostly used by the English teachers in delivering lesson was Bahasa Indonesia. Then, the other dominant codes were English, switching and/or mixing English – Bahasa Indonesia, and switching and/or mixing Bahasa Indonesia – English. In addition, the functions of classroom CS and CM were for curriculum access, classroom management, and interpersonal relation, in which classroom CS and CM for curriculum access was dominantly found in the teachers’s CS and CM. The finding of this research was the English teachers did more code-switching and code-mixing than target language in delivering the lessons, since the classroom activities’ purpose was to transmit subject content not to develop linguistic skills.

Abstract

This research is an descriptive research that aimed to analyze the quality of the English textbook in term of the activities provided by this book. The object of this research was the Bahasa Inggris textbook for 10th grade students published by the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. This research used an analysis format as the instrument to guide the researcher in analyzing the English textbook. The analysis format contained of six categories which was made based on the principles of good textbook proposed by the experts; the categories are providing the information and opinion gap activities which require the learners to communicate each other, asking the students to make up or write a story, asking the student to make grammatical discoveries from a simple drill, providing readiness activities, providing activities enable the students to recognize language input consciously and subconsciously, and providing activities stimulate the use of both right and left-brain. The result of this research showed that this English textbook can be categorized as good textbook since only one category that was rarely found in this textbook; asking the student to make grammatical discoveries from a simple drill. However, the other criteria had enough number as the activities provided by this book.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe students difficulties in presenting spoken exposition text, limited to the use of simple present tense. This research was a descriptive research, conducted in May-June 2017 at MAN 2 Padang. The population was Grade XI of Science program students of MAN 2 Padang. The sample was 38 students chosen by using stratified random sampling method. The research data was the clauses with grammatical mistakes found in the transcript of students speaking, obtained by a speaking test. The result of the research showed that the most frequent difficulties of verbal clauses using simple present tense were subject-verb agreement (51%) and the use of auxiliary verb (18%). The most frequent difficulties of nominal clauses using simple present tense were no verb (71%) and no subject (13%).

Abstract

This article aimed to describe the use of Vocabulary Dice Game in teaching vocabularyto elementary schoolstudents.Vocabulary Dice Game is versatile game that provides variety of instruction and can be adjusted depend on the needs of the objectives in vocabulary learning.Versatile game means, teacher can adjust what words the students need to learn, and create set of rules or instruction depend on students’ level. The versatility of this game canbenefit the learning process, not only making the students play through learning, but teacher will able to create a strategy in teaching vocabulary that is suitable to students characteristics and development.Vocabulary Dice game as teaching technique in the classroom provides fun and enjoyable learning process. Learning vocabulary is not always about drilling or repeating words but it can be done by act, draw or mime while playing game.By using this game, the learning process is expected to be fun and enjoyable for the students and enhance their memory about the material have been learned as it is obtained through enjoyable way.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to expose the issue about seizing liberty which is done by a slave in America and to know the contribution of the plot, setting, and character in revealing the issue of seizing liberty. This analysis is related to the psychoanalysis theory developed by Sigmund Freud and the concept of self-awareness by Crisp and Turner that are supported by the text and context based interpretation. The result of this analysis shows the efforts of a young slave woman to get free from slavery that can be seen from taking opportunities smartly and enhancing curiosity.

Abstract

This study is aimed to expose the issue about the ecological destruction which is done by people toward the nature and to know the contribution of poetic elements; irony, tone, and speaker in revealing the issue of ecological destruction. This analysis is related to the concept of eco-criticism by Garrard, Glotfelty, Michael P Cohen, and John Evelyn. The result of this analysis shows that the ecological destruction is done in two ways; exploitation and technological abuse.
