Abstract

Background : The ability of the elderly to remember past events is better than the ability to remember events that have just happened. The elderly who have problems retaining the new information they get can lead to more frustration and less tolerance for daily activities. Decreased balance and cognitive function, especially short-term memory in the elderly, can be improved, one of which is by doing dual task training. Purpose : This study aimed to to find out the Effect of Dual Task Training (Cognitive) on the Improvement of Short-Term Memory in the Elderly. Research Methods : The research method quasi-experimental with “Two-group pretest-posttest design”. The research was carried out at the Tresna Werdha Social Home in Cipayung, East Jakarta, April-May 2021. This study required two groups with a sample size of 16 people per group. The data collection stages are preparation (informed consent), pre-intervention (Mini Cognitive Test), intervention (dual task training in the intervention group, and education in the control group) given 3 times a week for 15 minutes for 4 weeks, and the post-intervention stage.. Result : here was a significant difference in the average short-term memory in the elderly between before and after the Dual Task Training (Cognitive) intervention (p = 0.0001), there was no significant difference in the average short-term memory in the elderly between before and after the physiotherapy education intervention in control group (p = 0.38), and there was a significant difference in mean short-term memory (cognitive) between the case group and control group (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: giving Dual Task Training (Cognitive) exercises is effective in improving short-term memory in the elderly.

Abstract

Background : The existence of the elderly population is scattered in both urban and rural areas. One of the problems that are often experienced by the elderly is cognitive impairment. Cognitive changes that occur in the elderly are shown through intellectual decline, especially on tasks that require speed and short-term memory. One of the exercises that can be given to the elderly in cognitive improvement is brain gym exercise which aims to increase self-confidence, stimulate the right and left brain, relax the brain. Objective: To determine the effect of brain gym exercise on cognitive in the elderly. Research Methods : Quasi experimental with “Two-group pretest-posttest design”. The research was carried out at the Tresna Werdha Budi Mulya I Social Institution, East Jakarta, from January to November 2021. This study required two groups with a sample size of 15 people per group. The stages of data collection were preparation (informed consent), pre-intervention (Mini Cognitive Test), intervention (brain gym exercise and education) in the treatment group, and education in the control group. given 3 times a week for 15 minutes for 3 weeks, and the post-intervention stage. Result: There was a significant difference in cognitive average between before and after the Brain Gym Exercise intervention in the elderly (p = 0.0001), there was no significant difference in cognitive average between before and after the physiotherapy education intervention in the control group (p = 0.334), and there was a difference in the mean cognitive score between the case group and the control group after the intervention (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Brain Gym Exercise intervention is effective in improving Cognitive in the Elderly.

Abstract

Aging or increasing age is a condition that must occur in human life. Balance disorders are one of the problems that occur due to physiological changes in the elderly. One strategy to improve balance is with physiotherapy modalities. Various interventions that can be given physiotherapy to improve balance, one of which is elastic band exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of elastic band exercise on the elderly with balance disorders. Methodology: Quasi experimental research design using Two-group pretest-posttest design. The research population is all the elderly in PSTW Cipayung. The results of the sample count were 15 people per group, a total of 30 people. The independent variable in this study was the Elastic Band Exercise intervention. The dependent variable is the balance of the elderly. This research will be conducted in April – September 2022. Data collection uses a balance assessment instrument and then the Elastic Band Exercise intervention. Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate. The results showed that there were 2 sample groups with the same number, namely the intervention group as many as 15 people (50.0%), and the control group as many as 15 people (50.0%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant difference in the average balance in the elderly between before and after in the intervention group (p = 0.0001), there was a significant difference in the average balance in the elderly between before and after (p = 0.028) in the control group. , and there was a significant difference in the average elderly balance between the intervention group and the control group (p = 0.0001). Research suggestions so that the elderly can practice Elastic Band Exercise regularly and regularly, relax by keeping the heart and mind so as not to stress.
