Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Porosity is one of the mechanical properties that makes acrylic resin susceptible to the attachment of debris and microorganisms such as Candida albicans. The addition of fiber can overcome this problem. The addition of fiber will leads to acrylic resin with better physical properties than without the addition. E-glass fiber is often used in dentistry. However, in Indonesia, the price is relatively high and difficult to obtain, requiring quite a long order. Alternatives such as non-dental glass fiber are widely available at affordable prices. This study was aimed to analyse the difference in the adhesion of Candida albicans on glass fiber non-dental and e-glass fiber dental reinforced polymer after immersion in 0.5% NaOCl. Methods: The type of research was quantitative research with experimental laboratory methods using a posttest control group design. The total number of samples was 12, divided into three groups: the control group (polymer without fiber addition), treatment group 1 (glass fiber non-dental reinforced polymer), and treatment group 2 (e-glass fiber dental reinforced polymer). Statistical analysis used was the Kruskal-Wallis test. Then, to determine which groups had differences, an advance test (post-hoc) was carried out using the Mann-Whitney test to determine the differences in each group. Results: Adhesion of Candida albicans in the control group (0.68%), non-dental glass fiber (0.56%), and dental e-glass fiber (0.43%). The result of the statistical test resulted in p-value=0.007; p<0.05. The result of the post-hoc test was 0.021. Conclusion: There is a difference in the adhesion of Candida albicans between non-dental glass fiber and dental e-glass fiber dental re-inforced polymer after immersion in 0.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) solution. Keywords: Candida albicans, glass fiber non dental, e-glass fiber dental reinforced polymer, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite.
