Abstract

Physical exercise exerts beneficial effects on the spatial learning and memory. High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) has been proposed as a time-efficient physical exercise regimen. On the other hand, there were evidences that HIIE increased oxidative stress biomarkers and reduced antioxidant capacity, which resulted in oxidative damage. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of high-intensity interval exercise and moderate-intensity interval exercise on oxidative stress biomarkers and oxidative enzymes activity in the hippocampus and the spatial memory of ovariectomized rats. A total of 16 female Sprague Dawley rats aged 12 weeks were randomly assigned into 4 groups, i.e. the sham-operated (SO), ovariectomized without exercise (O), ovariectomized with high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), and ovariectomized with moderate-intensity interval exercise (MIIE) groups. Rats of the exercise groups (HIIE & MIIE groups) performed 6 sessions of interval exercise per week for 6 weeks. The spatial memory of rats was measured using the Morris water maze procedure. The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and activity of catalase (Cat) as well as glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in hippocampus were determined using spectrophotometry method. The spatial learning and memory retention of the moderate-intensity interval exercise group was significantly better than that of the high-intensity interval exercise group. The GPx activity of MIIE group was higher than any other groups. The SO group had the lowest hippocampal MDA level and highest Cat activity among groups. Moderate-intensity interval exercise reduces the ovariectomy induced-oxidative stress in the hippocampus and improves spatial learning and memory retention of ovariectomized rats.

Abstract

Background/aim: Dehydration due to inadequate water intake in children may disrupt brain functions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of hydration education with water provision on hydration status, cognitive functions and motor performance. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight children in primary full-day school (age 8 – 11 years) were recruited in this study. The intervention of hydration education was performed for two days, both for students and teachers. The water was provision for 12 days. Letter cancellation task (LCT), symbol digit modalities test (SDMT), and direct image different test (DIDT) were used to assess cognitive functions. Motor performance was evaluated using a finger tapping test (FTT). Hydration status was determined with urine specific gravity (USG) and urine color (UC). Before and after interventions, all parameters were evaluated. Results: Most students found dehydrated (>65%). The students had lower USG and UC after the intervention and it was correlated with each other (before; rs=0.45, P = 0.001 and after; rs=0.82, P = 0.001). All cognitive and motor functions were significantly higher after an intervention (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Hydration education to students and teachers combined with water provision at primary full-day school increases hydration status and enhances cognitive and fine motor skills.

Abstract

It is well established that a decrease of estrogen during natural or surgical menopause (ovariectomy)could influence female anxiety behaviour both in human and animal experiments. Several studies haveproved that exercise act as a potential therapy to reduce depression and anxiety behaviours. The currentstudy analyzed the effects of High-Intensity Interval Exercise (HIIE) to anxiety-related behaviours ofrats after long-term ovaries removal. Fifteen Sprague-Dawley rats (twelve weeks old) were used in thisstudy. All rats were divided into sham-operated, ovariectomy, and ovariectomy with HIIE (OVXHIIE). The HIIE group was treated for 7 weeks of interval exercise that started after twelve weeks ofovariectomized using treadmill. Anxiety related behaviour were represented by frequencies toentrances centre arena, freezing and grooming duration on open field test. A significant decrease(p<0.05) in the frequencies to enter open arena was detected in ovariectomized rats compared to shamand ovariectomy with HIIE, while reversed effect has observed in freezing duration. The present resultsshow that HIIE may help to counteract the ovariectomized effect on anxiety-related behaviours of rats. The HIIE may become the promising therapy to treat anxiety behaviour on menopause condition. Abstract

Background: Anxiety is the most frequently encountered mental health disorder, even among the elderly. Persistent anxiety in the elderly can impair their capacity to do daily tasks and diminish their sense of well-being. One of the recommended strategies for overcoming anxiety in the elderly is to engage in regular and quantifiable physical activity. Objective: To conduct a literature review to determine the effect of exercise on reducing anxiety in the elderly. Method: A literature review is a form of research that is conducted in this manner. Two databases, Pubmed and Google Scholar, were used to choose the papers. Prisma Flow is used to identify publications that are appropriate for repository use. After articles are filtered by keywords, they are verified for duplication across the two databases. The study publications used quasi-experimental and Randomized Control Trial (RCT) methods, were available in their entirety, and were published within the last decade. Additionally, the article used 45-year-old participants who had anxiety alone or in conjunction with other health conditions. Result: A total of ten articles were chosen. The ten articles used a variety of different forms of physical activity and anxiety measurement techniques. Each of these studies demonstrated a significant benefit of physical exercise in reducing anxiety in the elderly. Conclusion: Exercises such as gymnastics, walking, yoga, and breathing exercises have been demonstrated to be useful in lowering anxiety in the elderly. Keywords: Exercise; Anxiety; Elderly

Abstract

Posyandu for the elderly is a community-driven and agreed-upon integrated service station for the elderly in a specific location where they can receive health care. Currently, not all provinces in Indonesia (43.9%), including Maluku, hold Posyandu for the elderly. The Mosso Villages in Central Maluku Regency's Tehoru District has never offered posyandu services to the elderly. The absence of skilled cadres, infrastructure, and a small number of health workers causes posyandu's lack of action in this area. This community engagement aimed to strengthen the elderly posyandu in Mosso village by providing cadre training and mentoring. Ten cadres have been trained, and their knowledge and abilities have improved due to the training. The mentoring activities revealed that the Posyandu Wae BaK and Wae Lisa provided routine services every month and that the cadres could provide posyandu services for the elderly on their own.

Abstract

Research on risk factors for diabetes (DM) is growing. Identification of these risk factors aims to prevent DM as early as possible. This study intends to identify the utilization of the Finnish diabetes risk score (FINDRISC) and its development using bibliometric analysis. The keywords “FINDRISC AND Diabetes” were used to search for articles published in 2005-2021 in PubMed. A total of 249 articles were analyzed based on the number of publications per year, journals that publish the papers, number of publications by author and year of publication, number of publications by affiliation and year of publication, number of publications by country of origin of authors and year of publication, number of keywords, number of citations, types of articles, specific topics, and theme mapping. The data visualization was obtained from the Scopus database and the VOSviewer and Biblioshiny applications. Despite the increase in publications, the number of publications on FINDRISC in DM patients is still very few per year, with 92.8% being the primary study. Based on clusters of the country of origin, publications are still dominated by researchers from countries in the European region, and the researchers intensely relate to each other through citations. Research themes related to FINDRISC are not limited to DM risk factors. This study is the first study of a bibliometric analysis of the utilization of FINRISC in DM patients. The analysis results can be used to evaluate existing research gaps and identify future research opportunities.
