Abstract

This study reveals the differentiated languages or heteroglossia in popular novel entitled The UndomesticGoddess. Heteroglossia is a terminology which Mikhail Bakhtin introduced in his essay Discourse in theNovel. Novel is an arena where the contestation of ideologies take place. It contests from the socialinteraction among the characters of a novel. The Undomestic Goddess tells about a young female lawyerwho gets fired from the law firm because she makes a huge mistake, then because of the mistake shebecomes a house-keeper. Heteroglossia is applied in this novel known from the utterances used by thecharacters and narrator of the novel. From heteroglossia or differentiated languages emanate ideologies.This study focuses on the contestation of the two opposite ideologies; patriarchy and feminism. Itidentifies utterances and categorizes them. It also needs interpretation to elucidate the ideologies found inthe utterances. Patriarchal ideology which has put male as a dominant force is not only believed by themale characters, but the female characters also practise them. The opposite ideology, feminism shows thatthe female character tries to break the social construction that brings female as an important other andoften gets discrimination in the binary opposition between male and female. This novel depicts the socialproblem people experience although they live in this modern era when digital technology cannot beseparated from their lives and females can achieve high-education and do career, the patriarchal ideologystill works in the society.Keywords: heteroglossia, patriarchy, feminism, ideological contestation, The Undomestic Goddess

Abstract

This study reveals tone of the two Maya Angelou’s poems. They are entitled Phenomenal Woman and Equality. Revealing tone needs to find out the speakers of the poems. They also convey message for the readers, so that it finds the voice of the poems. This study includes in a qualitative research that does not discuss numerical data. It describes findings of the data used. Conducting this study, the researchers did some procedures; reading the two poems as the data, identifying poems’ elements including the speaker, analyzing the tone and the message, and interpreting the data. It applies poetry theory that focuses on the intrinsic elements; tone, speaker, image, and figure of speech. From the procedures conducted, the two poems have different tone, but over all they tend to convey positive tone. Phenomenal Woman brings self-confidence tone of a woman. It has message for people, especially women, not to be embarrassed to what they have. They need care to be respected by others. Then, the second poem, Equality shows dissatisfaction and anger of a woman who experienced inequality in the society. Both poems are conveyed by women as the speakers. Abstract

Reading children’s literature is a good choice for young readers because they have to get involve into reading process to build their habit and if this activity is done continuously, it will be a character. Reading will broaden young reader’s mind to accept all information from reading texts and one example is from reading children’s literature. There are many kinds of children’s literature written in L1 as well as L2 languages because EFL can help young learners adapt to use English in their daily activity. The choice to read English children’s literature will help them learn not just the vocabulary but also the values from the story, such as self-confident, honesty, friendship, bravery, and many more. Those values are some of philosophical values which are the important elements in building students’ character. As a descriptive study in which the purpose is to find out certain phenomena, we chose Randall Van Nostrand’s Helen and The Golden Bee as the object of the study. There are two problems focusing on Helen as the main character in growing her self- confident and helping others though she also experienced some conflicts, internally and externally. This study applied Ecofeminism approach in order to get the findings which show how Helen struggles through her conflicts to build her self-confident and made friends with other creatures, as part of the nature in the environment in which she created on her adventure.

Abstract

This research reveals double-voiced discourse in dialogues of Susan Glaspell’s Trifles. This research is categorized as a qualilative study. The data was taken from Glaspell’s Trifles text and indentified by applying Bakhtin’s double-voiced discourse (1981) and Baxter’s double-voiced discource functions (2014). It also applied Kate Millet’s Sexual Politics (2000) and Putnam Tong’s Feminist Thought (2009) to interpret the ideologies found in the text. There are thirteen double-voiced discourses found in Trifles. They represent two opposite ideologies; patriarchy and feminism delivered by the male and female characters. The discourses show personal power, debate ideas, and building solidarity. The male character uses the discourse to display personal power. Meanwhile, the female characters use the discourses to debate ideas and build their solidarity as women.

Abstract

A Farewell to Arms is one of Hemingway’s works which uses battle field as setting. This novel is full of humanism message which depict social problem people have. The social problem, war depicted causes personal problem for people represented by one of Hemingway’s character, Catherine Barkley. Sigmund Freud contributes to find out the personal problems which form ego self-defense mechanism. There are five ego self-defense mechanism; repression, projection, reaction-formation, fixation, and regression. The five ego self-defense mechanisms are found in this novel.   Key words: ego self-defense mechanism, repression, projection, reaction-formation, fixation, regression.

Abstract

Romance, one of popular fiction genres tells about love story which forms formula as plot and cultural convention. In Sandra Brown’s two romance novels plot is explored from exposition to resolution which conflicts develop the story. Characterization and setting help the writer find the cultural convention especially in American culture. It is not enough to discuss popular fiction without discussing the ideology. Here, patriarchy dominates romance novels. According to Dorothy Dinnerstein, there are six sexual arrangement which embody patriarchy domination as found in the two romance novels, Sunny Chandler’s Return and Demon Rumm. Abstract

Manga is Japanese comic which has been trend in Indonesia recently. This work has its own aesthetics values and they reveal the Japanese philosophy of life. Japanese applies zen budhisme in their life as well as Aoyama Gosho, Detective Conan author (mangaka). Wabi-sabi, the Japanese aesthethic values also teaches us how life goes. It teaches us using imperfectness, incompleteness, and impermanence to make us balance with the natural process. Realism applied by Gosho to depict his characters and it looks so real. Readers seem close to the condition which he describes. Detective story always makes tension for the readers. It also makes this manga interesting to read. Abstract

Literary works reflect the social life which the author lives in. It gives the reciprocal  effect between society and the works. Although, not all life is depicted in the works, it potrays part of human life in works. One of the example is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This novel depicts the social condition of England in 18th century. Moreover, it reveals the women’s characteristics at that time. The characteristics of women in 18th century is materialistic. It is caused by the inheritance system, primogeniture which disallowed second son and daughter to inherit. It gives big impact to women and social condition. They could not fulfill their need, so they want to get partner who could give them anything, love and money. Abstract

Thomas Hardy’s An Imaginative Woman depicts woman condition in England in Victorian era (19th century). Women were oppressed in domestic and public areas because England was dominated by patriarchy. The social norms were influenced by patriarchy.Relating to the social condition found in the work, psychoanalysis feminism is applied to analyze the object. Psychoanalysis feminism by Dorothy Dinnerstein reveals gender paradigms and these paradigms are found in the work. There are inequality relation between men and women caused by patriarchal social norms. Parenting is the aim of psychoanalysis feminism.
