Abstract

This is research aimed to (1) analyze community’s perception regarding the existence of coral reef resources in Mattiro Baji Village, (2) analyze various issues in relation to establishment and management strategy of community-based Marine Protected Area (MPA). This research uses in-depth interview and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods. From the analyses it is concluded that (1) the perception of local community regarding the importance of coral reef ecosystem value is excellent, even though it is not fully implemented yet in their daily life, (2) Several key factors supporting the existence of CBMPA in Mattiro Baji include (a) community understanding about the need to MPA is relatively good, (b) there is a valuable lesson learned regarding the destruction of coral reef ecosystem, and (c) the unity spirit among community to protect and manage the resources from outsiders. Various strategies need to be conducted for the MPA development such as the establishment of waters boundary and the use of village area, zonation management, monitoring and surveillance of areas utilization and MPA, the increase of community understanding to environment, community efforts and incomes through alternative income generation activities.

Abstract

Sea urchins have long been an important component of gleaning invertebrate fisheries and are valued for their highly nutritious gonads. Sea urchin fisheries are often unreported and unregulated, despite increasing indications of overexploitation. Data on the post-harvest utilization of sea urchins are limited, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. This study at 12 sites across four regions in Indonesia (Sulawesi, Moluccas, Nusa Tenggara, Papua) aimed to provide an overview of sea urchin utilization in eastern Indonesia. Data were collected from July to September 2020 using a questionnaire with a snowballing sampling method. There were 187 respondents (62.6% male and 37.4% female) ranged in age from 3-76 years old, and most had been collecting sea urchins for more than five years. Respondents mostly collected the sea urchins from coral reef or seagrass habitats. Four genera (Tripneustes, Diadema, Echinometra and Echinothrix) were identified. Mean catch ranged from 32 (Makassar) to 169 (Maluku Tengah) individual sea urchin per collection. Most respondents knew local names for sea urchins, especially those they collected. Almost 70% respondents used their catch mainly for home consumption, and only 4.8% respondents mainly selling their catch. Most urchins sold were whole or crudely de-spined, typically fetching IDR 500-1000 each. Additional post-harvest processing before sale included removing the gonads from the test and/or cooking, with a unit price of IDR 5,000-25,000/product. Commonly consumed raw, urchins were sometimes cooked (mostly barbecued). These data indicate a need for efforts towards socio-ecologically appropriate sea urchin conservation and fisheries management to address the widespread indications of increasing exploitation levels and declining sea urchin populations.

Abstract

Mangrove snails (Telescopium telescopium) is one of the biota that plays a role in the process of litter decomposition and mineralization of organic matter in mangrove plants. The purpose of this study is to determine the abundance, size structure, growth pattern of mangrove snails (Telescopium telescopium) and water quality in the Lantebung Mangrove Ecotourism in Makassar City. The method of collecting mangrove snails by purposive sampling uses a quadrant transect measuring 1x1 m2 with three repetitions at three observation stations. The water quality parameters measured were temperature, salinity, pH, and sediment. The results showed that the abundance of mangrove snails was 45 individuals (Station I), 46 individuals (Station II), and 45 individuals (Station III) respectively. The length of the mangrove snail (Telescopium telescopium) of station I ranged from 55.5-78.1 mm, station II 52.9-72.6 mm and station III 55.3-77.1 mm.  The weight structure of the mangrove snail (Telescopium telescopium) of station I ranged from 17.0-37.4 g, station II 17.0-30.3 and station III 17.0-41.0 g. The growth pattern of mangrove snails based on the weight length relationship at the three stations showed a negative allometric equation (b<3), i.e. the length increase was faster than the weight increase. The highest abundance of mangrove snails is found at station II and the lowest abundance is at stations I and III. The size of the mangrove snail in terms of shell length at station I is longer than that of stations II and III and in terms of weight at station III is heavier than stations I and station II. The quality of the waters refers to Government Regulation no. 22 of 2021 attachment VIII for marine life that still supports the life of mangrove snails.

Abstract

Ekosistem magrove berperan penting menjaga kestabilan ekologi wilayah pesisir.
