Abstract

Anxiety in dealing with real teaching is experienced by preservice teachers. This anxiety can certainly disrupt the process of implementing real teaching. If anxiety can be detected early, various efforts can be made to reduce the anxiety. Thus, this study seeks to explore the anxiety faced by preservice teacher in dealing with real teaching and their efforts to reduce such anxiety. In order to achieve the research objectives, the researcher applied qualitative research through a case study strategy using structured interviews of 238 preservice teachers at one of Indonesia’s private universities. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that there are 14 anxiety faced by preservice teachers in carrying out real teaching which is divided into 5 factors causing anxiety, namely schools, teachers, students, lecturers, and the preservice teachers themselves, as well as 9 attempts by preservice teachers in order to deal with this anxiety. Broadly speaking, good communication between preservice teachers and stakeholders of real teaching activities that includes schools, teachers, students, and lecturers is an effort that can be done so that the teaching anxiety can be reduced.

Abstract

This study was aimed at reconstructing the mental processes involved in academic writing. This qualitative case study involved two lecturers in University of Kuningan since they were considered able to engage mental processes in their steps of writing for academic purposes or scientific manuscript. The data were obtained through in-depth interview. As result, there are some mental processes involved in the writing activity experienced by the writers. Those mental processes are differently involved in the steps of writing starting from brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising, editing, until proofreading stage. Besides, this study revealed the ways how the writers develop their writing in case of producing a long composition without losing the essence of the paper, how the writers overcome the sticking in their writing process, the writers’ special writing features and what they expect from the reader after reading their writing. It also revealed that the differences experienced by the participants in each stage of writing are strongly influenced by their areas of interest, writing behavior and their writing style.Keywords: mental process, academic writing, stages of writing

Abstract

Listening skill is essential in EFL learning. Experiencing more than three years in teaching Listening, the researcher covers that EFL students face problems in comprehending what people say in target language. Through this study, the researcher aims at exploring EFL students’ experience in learning to listen to spoken English text which covers (a) students’ attitude towards learning to listen to spoken English texts, b) listening anxiety in listening to spoken English texts, and (c) students’ effort in improving their listening skill in listening to spoken English text. To meet the research objectives, the researcher used a quantitative research through applying a survey design. A closed ended questionnaire containing 50 questions were distributed to 58 EFL students of a Private University in West Java, Indonesia. The questionnaire was tested its validity and reliability. Moreover, the data were analyzed descriptive statistically. Data revealed that students show (a) a positive attitude towards learning to listen to English spoken text (3.56); (b) students’ listening anxiety is in high level (3.52); and (c) students have a high effort in improving their listening skill (3.74). To conclude with, in spite of the high level of students’ listening anxiety, they show the high level of attitude in learning to listen to English spoken text and the high effort  in improving their listening skill as well.Keywords: attitude; listening anxiety; listening skill.

Abstract

Four Square Writing Method is a writing method which helps students in organizing concept to write by using a graphic organizer. This study aims to examine the influence of applying FSWM in combination of product and process based approaches to teaching writing discussion texts toward students’ writing skill, the teaching-learning writing process and the students’ attitude toward the implementation of the writing method. This study applies a mixed-method through applying an embedded design. 26 EFL university students of a private university in West Java, Indonesia, are involved in the study. There are 3 kinds of instrument used, namely tests (pre and post-test), field notes, and questionnaires. Data taken from students’ writing test are analyzed statistically to identify the influence of applying the writing method toward students’ writing skill; data taken from field notes are analyzed qualitatively to examine the learning writing activities at the time the writing method is implemented; and data taken from questionnaires are analyzed descriptive statistic to explore students’ attitude toward the implementation of the writing method. Regarding the result of paired t-test, the writing method is effective in improving students’ writing skill since level of significant (two-tailed) is less than alpha (0.0000.05). Furthermore, the result taken from field notes shows that each steps applied and graphic organizer used in the writing method lead students to compose discussion texts which meet a demand of genre. In addition, regard with the result taken from questionnaire, the students show highly positive attitude toward the treatment since the mean score is 4.32.Keywords: FSWM; combination of product and process based approach, discussion text

Abstract

Abstract: Teaching practicum is an obligatory task for students of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education to fulfill  their graduation requirement. Based on pre survey, this study aimed to find out the level of foreign language teaching anxiety (FLTA) experienced by English students and teachers throughout the teaching practicum. By using qualitative methods, 50 pre-service teachers completing their teaching practicum as part of their graduation requirement at English Department, Faculty of Teaching, participated in the study. The research tools were close-ended questionnaires filled by pre-service teachers and semistructured interviews conducted with 5 of the participant pre-service teachers. The analysis of the data revealed eight main categories as the foreign language student teacher anxiety: when the cooperative teacher and/or supervisor observe their teaching activity (3.6 mean rate), lack of teaching experience (3,4 mean rate), got stressed when they face the first day of teaching practicum (3,4 mean rate), conducting practicum assessment (3,1 mean rate), having a big class (2,9 mean rate), teaching grammar (2,8%), feeling worry if their students ask them questions (2,7 mean rate), and catching up students’ attention (2,6 mean rate). Lack of teaching experience and less of mastering the material caused the anxiety during teaching appeared. Therefore, before conduct teaching activity, it is a must to the techer to comprehend the material in order to avoid to make mistake and support our confident during teaching activity.Keywords: foreign language teaching anxiety, pre-service teachers, teaching practicum

Abstract

This study examines the activities of teaching-learning writing discussion texts when product and process-based approach combination is implemented in EFL writing classroom, the effects of applying the writing approach on EFL students’ writing skill, and the students’ attitude toward the implementation of writing approach in the classroom. It uses a mixed-methods through applying an embedded design by involving 24 second-grade students of a private university in West Java, Indonesia. There were four instruments used, namely field notes, videotapes, students’ tests (pre-test and post-test), and questionnaires. The findings show that the students were actively involved in class when the teacher applied the writing approach in writing classroom. There was also the improvement in the students’ writing skill based on the result taken from the students’ tests since the level of significance (two-tailed) in paired t-test is less than the alpha (0.0000.05). Qualitatively, the improvements were also found in generic features, textual language, and syntactical language aspects. In addition, the students showed highly positive attitude (4.35 average score) toward the implementation of the approach in the classroom.Keywords: writing, writing skill, discussion texts, product and process-based approach combination

Abstract

This study focused on needs analysis and course design of English for accounting in tertiary education in Kuningan, West Java. It aimed to investigate the required learning materials and the suitable learning activities for accounting students of tertiary education. This study employed qualitative method. It was conducted in qualitative design with some data collected quantitatively through questionnaire and some collected qualitatively through interviews and document analysis from students and lecturers. The questionnaire was used for descriptive statistics, whereas interviews and document analysis were used for the collection of more in-depth and emergent data. This study revealed that listening and speaking skills are the priority in teaching English which is closely followed by writing and reading. The highest students’ preferences for classroom learning activities are vocabulary exercising, followed by simulation and grammar exercising. It is also found that most students consider English is important in their future career and they might need English to communicate with colleague and customer. This information target situation should be taken into consideration as the basis of syllabus and material development. The information from target situation analysis is important in ESP course since it is all about eliciting what the learners have to know related to their future career.

Abstract

With the demands of professionals, the study reports that there is a great deal of anxiety that arises in real teaching. As an effort to reduce the teaching anxiety, this study explores the level of teaching anxiety faced by student teachers in implementing real teaching as well as factors that can trigger the emergence of anxiety. This research was conducted quantitatively by applying the survey as the research strategy. The Student Teacher Anxiety Scale (STAS) found by Hart (1987) became a research instrument with language modification performed. 238 student teachers of Multidiciplinary Education Study Program (ESP) at one of the Private University in Indonesia who will carry out real teaching are involved as research respondents. The respondents consist of 6 different ESP. Based on the results of the study, it can be seen that the level of teaching anxiety faced by student teachers of multidiciplinary ESP in carrying out real teaching activities is at a high level with an average of 3.69. The level of anxiety experienced by student teachers of each ESP are as follows: Primary School Teacher (3.89), Mathematics (3.74), English Language (3.48), Indonesian Language (3.47) are at a high level. While the level of teaching anxiety of student teachers of Biology ESP (3.35) and Economic ESP (3.26) are at the normal level. Meanwhile, the most influencing factor causing the teaching anxiety were teaching preparation (3.86), teaching evaluation (3.73), class control (3.71), school staff (3.58), and failure in teaching (3, 58). With the anxiety that arises, good communication is the initial solution that can be done so that real teaching activities get better. Finally, real teaching will be more useful when the anxiety that arises is considered as a stimulation so that students can carry out better real teaching activities.

Abstract

Program pengabdian yang berupa pendampingan bagi si anak-anak dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dilakukan bertujuan untuk membantu para siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris selama belajar dari rumah selama pandemic Covid-19. Pendampingan ini dilakukan melihat kesulitan-kesulitan para siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dan kesulitan orang tua dalam membimbing belajar bahasa Inggris, sehingga hal tersebut menurunkan minat belajar dan kemampuan para siswa dalam Bahasa Inggris. Karena masalah tersebut program pengabdian ini disambut dengan baik diantara orang tua yang tinggal di Perum Griya Nyansa Lestari, terdapat 6 siswa yang tergabung dalam program pengabdian ini, jumlah peserta anak-anak dalam program ini dibatasi dikarenakan protocol covid-19 yang membatasi jumlah peserta. Para anak-anak yang terlibat dalam program pengabdian terlihat antusias dalam belajar bahasa Inggris dalam program ini, hal tersebut bisa dilihat dari kehadiran mereka selama pembelajaran. Program ini akan berlanjut selama para siswa membutuhkan selama masa belajar dirumah. Kata kunci: Pengabdian, pendampingan, minat belajar, bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

Literasi merupakan salah satu kegiatan yang akhir-akhir ini menjadi pioritas dan menjadi agenda besar dari pemerintah yang wajib dikembangkan dan di implementasikan dalam setiap kegiatan siswa disekolah ataupun masyarakat. literasi memiliki makna awal yaitu ‘kemampuan membaca dan menulis’ yang kemudian berkembang menjadi ‘kemampuan menguasai pengetahuan bidang tertentu’. Literasi di Indonesia masih tergolong rendah hingga saat ini. Kegiatan literasi dipengaruhi beberapa faktor yaitu kecakapan, akses, alternatif dan budaya. Kemampuan literasi akan sangat memengaruhi penalaran dan kompetensi lainnya. Sehingga peserta didik perlu memiliki kecintaan pada aktivitas pengembangan literasi sejak dini. Peran guru dan orang tua sangat diperlukan untuk kembali memotivasi dan membangkitkan semangat berliterasi khususnya untuk anak-anak dijenjang sekolah dasar sebagai pondasi untuk lebih melek literasi, tidak hanya sekedar membaca dan menulis tapi bagaimana peserta didik dapat memahami ilmu pengetahuan yang didapatkan dari buku bacaan dan juga keadaan pengalamannya di dunia nyata. Dengan adanya kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat yang bertembat di Desa Kramatmulya, Kabupatenb Kuningan peranan orang tua selaku masyarakat menjadi lebih optimal dalam membantu pengembangan budaya literasi di lingkungan masyarakat (rumah). Gerakan Literasi Masyarakat ini merupakan  kegiatan yang bersifat partisipatif dengan melibatkan warga masyarakat (peserta didik, orang tua dan perangkat Desa), akademisi yang dapat merepresentasikan keteladanan, dll.), Salah satunya telah mewujudkan Rumah Literasi masyarakat sebagai organisasi pembelajaran yang warganya literat sepanjang hayat adalah pembiasaan membaca peserta didik. Program ini membantu para orang tua siswa yang kesulitan dalam mendampingi putra-putri mereka dalam pembelajaran dan anak-anak lebih termotivasi dalam menumbuhkan budaya membaca dan menulis serta membantu meringankan beban para orang tua dalam mendampingi anak-anak mereka dalam belajar.
