Abstract

ABSTRACT: The simple availability and accessibility of online reading materials is perceived a benefit for reading culture, and at the same time, Internet services can be seen as a challenge to typical print reading. This study was designed to examine thepattern of todays’ EFL university students on reading habits in the digital age and to examine the significant of internet on EFL reading habits. In order to have a broad overview of the current reading habits, a questionnaire was conducted among 36 fourth-year students of Universitas Islam Malang. Creswell’s (2009) method was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that respondent enjoy online reading because internet and electronic devices create a perfect. Internet affects the respondent’s reading, nowadays, many respondents are surfing the internet, doing more scrolling or non-linear reading, and attempted to get the information they’re needed. Beside, the students are still interesring in reading printed books.Keywords: Digitalization, Reading Habits, University Students

Abstract

This research investigated the significant differences in English proficiency of students with different learning styles among the 5th-semester students at the University of Islam Malang. The research was in the form of Ex-Post facto design. The researcher took the sample which consists of 48 students. This research used cluster sampling classified as the process of taking the sample. The data were gained by using a learning style questionnaire and TOEFL test. The data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA on IBM SPSS Statistic 25. The researcher also provides a nonparametric test, the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results showed that 1) The calculation from the One-Way ANOVA listening test described that there was no significant difference in listening mastery among students whose learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic (F= 0.868, p<0.427); 2) The calculation from One-Way ANOVA structure test described that there was no significant difference in structure mastery among students whose learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic (F= 0.245, p < 0.777); and 3) The calculation from Kruskal-Wallis test the significant value of reading comprehension test is p < 0.416. It is clearly stated that the result is not significant. It was concluded that there were no significant differences in students’ English proficiency among students whose learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. The researcher hoped that the future researcher can use another learning style that is more specific and more detailed.

Abstract

AbstrakThe aim of this research is to describe the speaking difficulties faced by good speaking achievers, and to explain learning strategies used by good speaking achiever of English department of University of Islam Malang overcome their difficulties. Here, good speaking achievers are the forth semester students who can speak English very well in which they get A score in every semester and participated in competition related to English. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher took two selected participants from the fourth grade of University of Islam Malang. The researcher used three instruments; interview guide, document and documentation. The finding of the study explained that mostly good speaking students had difficulties in learning speaking. The problems faced by the learners were lack of vocabulary, difficult in pronunciation, nervousness and less confident. The participants also had some strategies to overcome their problems. To encourage new vocabularies, the strategies that good speaking students used were watching the movie and listening to music. Then, practicing speaking often was strategy that the learner applied to overcome heir difficulties in pronunciation. Moreover, the strategy that participant used in solving their nervousness and their less confidence was talking to the lecturer and their close friends. Key Words: Speaking skill, speaking difficulties, learning strategies.

Abstract

Abstract: Plagiarism has become one form of cheating that occurs in the academic system. Some students do plagiarism by their intelligent ways, for example by changing some grammatical structures. This study focused on knowing the students' perception. In writing with sources, plagiarism defined as the act of admission. The thesis is a scientific work written by undergraduate students on the subject of a specific topic or field. This study is a tool for providing multidimensional data required to gain an understanding of students' perception of plagiarism in the completion of the thesis. This research conducted through a questionnaire to collect the data needed. Some people think plagiarism is not good, and some think it is positive because plagiarism helps students finish their thesis. English Department students at Universitas Islam Malang did plagiarism. Plagiarism may also be positive or negative as plagiarism allows them to accomplish their tasks. Reasons include lack of motivation, laziness and less honesty. Key Words: Plagiarism, Perceptions, Thesis
