Abstract

The aim of this study is to unpack the influence of listening habits on listening skills, particularly in the TOEFL ITP test. Among three available sections in TOEFL, the focus of this study is the listening section. Little did previous research reveal the relevant effect of listening behavior on the listening assessment of the TOEFL. Since listening becomes the most complicated skill for most test takers, this research is going to outline whether there is a correlation between students’ habitual listening in the past with their listening comprehension on the TOEFL test. The methodology used in this research is quantitative research with 80 university students as participants. With the result of a significant 2-tailed number at 0.26 using Pearson Bivariate Correlation, the finding reveals that there is no correlation between listening habit and TOEFL listening comprehension from the university student’s point of view. However, the arguments by university students of this statistical result are described narratively. Keywords: TOEFL, Listening Habit, Listening Comprehension

Abstract

Discussing second language acquisition (SLA) from the perspective of one same-nationality family has been massively conducted. However, the recent study regarding SLA in toddlers in mixed-marriage families, especially with Indonesian mothers, has not been previously observed. Directed to the study demonstrated by Li (2007), this present study aimed to examine the three essential marks of family roles on their children's acquisition, such as the parent's literacy accomplishment, the daily occupation choice and opportunity, and adaptation as well as integration into the local country. Two families with Sudan-Indonesia and America-Indonesia backgrounds participated as research subjects. The narrative inquiry method through interviews (see Duff, 2019) was employed to gain the data. Then, the data were analyzed by using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six thematic analysis stages. The results revealed that the parental academic records of accomplishment, the family's occupation, and the socialization to the domestic environment positively affected family language policy (FLP), shaping the stairs of children's SLA. Moreover, this study may contribute to Indonesian families, school stakeholders, and EFL teachers in teaching the foreign language to their children and EFL students in gaining new languages.

Abstract

Due to the lack of current study numbers discussing English proficiency tests such as TOEFL, this study aims to investigate the test takers’ point of view on the TOEFL ITP test, mainly paper based-test and computer-based TOEFL, the similar TOEFL ITP test but employing computer screen as media. The latest study about those two assessments is necessary since both kinds of TOEFL media are massively implemented, particularly backward and after the pandemic Covid19. A survey methodology is employed in this study by spreading questionnaires. The scores gained from those two disparate TOEFL tests are described statistically. The gathered data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis to outline the perspectives of the test-takers on TOEFL PBT and CBT. Fifty-two participants from various education background levels, ages and genders partaking in this study. As a result, this study reveals that the implementing a computer screen for TOEFL obtained more positive percentages than paper-based TOEFL tests. Further discussion concerning prior study and implications are presented
