Abstract

This study describes (1) the work process analysis of the production stage in the industry, (2) the required competency and skills of CAD/ CAM and CNC in the industry, (3) the implementation of the basic competency of CAD/ CAM and CNC in vocational high schools, (4) the link and match between the competency of vocational high schools graduates and the industry on CAD/ CAM and CNC. The descriptive-qualitative method was employed by involving 8 people from Mega Andalan Kalasan Ltd (MAK) and 5 people from vocational high schools. The data were collected through observation and interviews which were further analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate (1) the work process analysis map the competencies that must be owned by the workforce including CAD drafter, CAM programmer, and CNC operators in which each workforce involved 4 work process sequences, (2) the competency of CAD/ CAM and CNC described the knowledge and psychomotor activities. In detail, the activity of the CNC machine setting produced knowledge competence and the skills of 36.5% and 26.7% respectively. The operating CNC machine produced the knowledge competence and skills of 25.4% and 23.3% respectively. The 3D drawing and 2D CAD systems produced the knowledge competence and skills of 19% and 23.3% respectively, CAM Programming generated the knowledge competence and skills of 19% and 26.7% respectively, (3) the implementation of basic competencies can be categorized as good, (4) there are two competencies fulfilled the link and match between the vocational high schools' competencies and industry, namely manufacturing drawing competency with CAD as well as mechanical competency with CNC and CAM.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the subjects that have low scores contributing to the low grade point average (GPA) of the students and (2) to evaluate the reasons for the low academic achievement among the students. This study was conducted from May 2012 until September 2012. It was an evaluation study. The method used in this study was a comparative descriptive, by comparing the students’ GPA and the categories of the students’ achievement based on the Academic Regulations of Yogyakarta State University. In addition, the study also qualitatively compared the subjects in the departments which have low achievement. The population were all active students of Faculty of Engineering, YSU in the academic year of 2011/2012 who have scores of  below B in more than 3 courses. To evaluate the students who had low GPA, it is used purposive random sampling. The method of data collection used documentation, interviews and questionnaires. The data was analysed using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis. The conclusions of this study were: (1) the subjects of the fields study had a very dominant contribution to low GPA of the students. The percentages of the field of study subjects having low achievement in bachelor and associate degree programmes were  84.2% and 87.7% respectively; (2) The reasons  for low achievement of the students  based on the students ‘point of view were: (a) the learning implementation aspects, especially from the lecturers (unclear teaching and explanation, inappropriate materials, excessive tasks and homework, the assessment process), (b) tight schedule  and (c) the intrinsic factors of the students. The reasons based on lecturers ‘point of view were: (a) the students’ input (low motivation, low quality, laziness), and (b) inadequate learning facilities both in terms of quantity and quality.

Abstract

The needs of operators for each type of industry are different because the type and the complexity of the task is different. Small and medium-sized industries require machine operators with better capabilities than operators in large companies, thus it is necessary to identify what tasks are performed by these operators. This study aim at (1) identifying duties of machine tool operators in small and medium enterprises, and (2) identifying tasks carried out by machine tool operators in small and medium enterprises. This study used a descriptive research method. The participants were eight machine tool operators from five small and medium enterprises in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The data collection used document review, observation, questionnaires and focus group discussions. The data were analysed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study were (1) five duties done by machine tool operators are identified (maintaining safe work environment, maintaining the machine tools, analyzing the blueprint, performing machining operations, cleaning the machines and the workplace), and (2) twenty seven tasks executed by machine tool operators are identified; twenty-two knowledge and skills, seventeen behaviors, and eighteen machines, tools and equipment required by machine operators.
