Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at analysing the five types of deixis according to Levinson (1983) that are used in Obama?s speech at Wakefield High School. It also aimed at describing the use of deixis in utterances, interpreting the references meaning, and finding out the most dominant type of deixis used. This study was conducted by using qualitative method. It was found that there are four types of deixis found such as person, temporal, spatial, and discourse deixis. The most dominant deixis found is person deixis. Person deixis consists of first, second, and third person. Person deixis was used to find out participant in the speech. Spatial deixis was used to describe a location of participant in the speech event. Temporal deixis was used to point certain period of time. Discourse deixis referred to certain discourse that contain the utterance or as a signal and its relations to surrounding text.   Keywords: Deixis, Speech, and Barack Obama.   Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa lima tipe dari deiksis menurut Levinson (1983) yang dipergunakan pada pidato Obama di Sekolah Tinggi Wakefield. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan deiksis dalam percakapan, menginterpretasikan maka dari referen, dan menemukan tipe deiksis yang paling dominan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa ada empat tipe deiksis dalam pidato Obama, yatu orang, wake, tempat, dan wacana. Deiksis yang paling dominan muncul adalah deiksis orang, yang terdiri dari orang tunggal, kedua, dan ketiga. Deiksis orang dipergunakan untuk menemukan partisipan dalam pidato. Deiksis tempat dipergunakan untuk mendeskripsikan lokasi dari partisipan dalam pidato. Deiksis waktu dipergunakan untuk menunjukkan periode waktu tertentu. Deiksis wacana merujuk pada wacana tertentu yang mengandung ungkapan atau sebagai sinyal dan hubungannya terhadap teks yang berkaitan.   Kata kunci: Deiksis, Pidato, dan Barack Obama.

Abstract

AbstractIndonesian English Young Learners (IEYL) really close to boredom. Therefore, the teachers are demanded to be as highly creative as possible when they are having classroom activities. To see the recent phenomena, most IEYL feel convenient to study in their English course rather than their school. This is due to the English course provides them with fun, relax, and enjoyable learning environment. In contrast, the school provides the IEYL with monotonous activities. In accordance with this problem, the writer is interested in describing five English games which might be references for school teachers. The problems of this study were: (1) what are the five English games which can help the IEYL in classroom activities? and (2) what are the procedures to apply the games in classroom activities? The findings were descriptively discussed by seeing the literature review. It is found that the games to help IEYL are: (a). Spider Web, (b). Cartoon Color, (c). Find Someone who, (d). Read-Run-Say-Listen-Write, and (e). What is it?Keywords:IEYL, LanguageGames and Classroom Activities

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to identify types of affixes which are applied in English and Bahasa Indonesia. The objects of this study were affixes which are applied both in English and Bahasa Indonesia in forming new words.The researcher used Lieber’s theory (2009) to explain types of English affixes and used Alwi, . The researcher also explained types of  Bahasa Indonesia affixes based on Alwi, Dardjowidjojo, Lapoliwa, and Moeliono’s theory (2003).  It was a library research study, therefore, this study used documentation technique as data collection instrument. The findings showed that (1) English has six types of affixes out of seven types from Lieber. They are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, circumfixes, interfixes, and simulfixes, (2) Bahasa Indonesia has four types of affixes. They are prefixes, suffixes, infixes, and circumfixes. (3) there are four similarities type of affixes that had by English and Bahasa Indonesia affixes, both of them have prefixes, suffixes, infixes and circumfixes. (4) English does not own transfixes. Lastly, (5) Bahasa Indonesia does not own interfixes, simulfixes and transfixes.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find outthe types of semiotic signs, the verbal and visual meanings of these signs, and the relationship among verbal and visual signs used in weight loss product ads. Qualitative method with descriptive approach was used in this study. 10 weight loss product ads were used in this study. There are icons, indexes, and symbols found in this study. There are 10 icons (100%), 7 indexes (70%), and 4 symbols (40%). Peirce’s theory was used in finding the types of semiotics in this study, and Saussure’s theory was used in finding the verbal and visual meanings as well as its relationship among them. The result of the study shows that the verbal and visual signs are used to create clear meanings and both of them have strong relationship in delivering messages of the products.Key words : Semiotic, Weight Loss Product Advertisements, and Verbal and Visual Signs.

Abstract

Along with the rapid development of technology, various kinds of social media applications are emerging and offering their users a variety of benefits. Social media such as WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Telegram, and Google Classroom, to name but a few, are the ones that are often used by students for online learning because they can be used easily, anywhere and anytime. This study aimed at finding out whether or not the students used social media for learning, the kinds of social media mostly preferred by the students, and the reasons for their preferences.  The population of this study was 625 students from two state senior high schools in Palembang. For the sampling technique, this study applied the probability-sampling technique. Then, to meet the standard number of samples in a survey study, the writers took 14% of the population. It meant there were 88 research samples, specifically 44 students from each school. To collect the data, the questionnaire and interview were used in this research. As the results, all participants showed that they have greatly exposed themselves to social media during the "School from Home" session during the pandemic situation. In addition, the majority of the students mentioned YouTube as their favorite tool to use, yet they somehow managed using WhatsApp, Google Meet, Blog, Zoom, and Google Classroom too. Lastly, students often use those social media in everyday activities, including learning.

Abstract

Peran Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa pengantar pendidikan di Indonesia dipandang penting dalam kemajuan dan perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan. Walaupun Bahasa Inggris masih berkedudukan sebagai bahasa asing pertama di Indonesia, Bahasa Inggris dijadikan sebagai sarana pengembangan dan pemanfaatan ilmu pengetahuan, teknologi dan seni. Maka dari itu, diperlukan penguasaan Bahasa Inggris, khususnya penguasaan TOEFL, di dunia pendidikan bagi mahasiswa. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menjawab tes Bahasa Inggris ekuivalensi TOEFL.  Jumlah peserta pada kegiatan ini adalah 41 orang yang berasal dari seluruh program studi Strata-1 di lingkungan FKIP Universitas Sriwijaya. Model yang digunakan adalah pendampingan, dimana tim memberikan pelatihan kepada peserta mengenai keterampilan menyimak, struktur, dan membaca. Adapun metode kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah presentasi. Sebelum penyampaian materi, peserta menjawab tes awal (pre-test) dan di akhir peserta menjawab tes akhir (post-test).  Peserta terlihat antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan ini. Berdasarkan wawancara singkat dengan peserta, diharapkan kegiatan ini dapat berlanjut di tahun berikutnya. Kendala yang terjadi selama berlangsungnya kegiatan tidak menganggu pelaksanaan kegiatan.
