Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to design the Creative Social Emotional Learning English (CSELE) classroom model in one of the district schools in South Sumatera, Indonesia. This model was proposed due to a growing awareness among educators and policymakers about the importance of social and emotional development for successful student. Based on the ADDIE model, the CSELE model is designed to include three steps: (1) the learning objective statement and need analysis, (2) the class strategy design, and (3) the class implementation and evaluation. The CSELE model focuses on integrating the efforts to support Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in the English as A Foreign Language (EFL) classroom context. This model involves the process of integrating the materials from the Indonesian 2013 national curriculum and creative teaching procedures for developing the students? social emotional competencies, which include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. The findings showed that the CSELE model has demonstrated positive effects on the students? social emotional competence, academic motivation, and classroom climate. However, more qualitative and quantitative studies should be conducted for further implementation of this model. Keywords:  Social Emotional Learning (SEL), English as a Foreign Language (EFL), creative, teaching and learning

Abstract

Interest and enthusiasm are internal factors known to an extent to have an influence toward learning in general. This study aims at checking these three variables relationship: interest, enthusiasm, and English achievement.  It was conducted in Sungai Liat Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands, Indonesia, in a state senior high school which provided 70 students to be the sample of this study from the population of 183 students in the school. The instruments used were: Interest and Enthusiasm Questionnaire and Students’ English score documentation. The data collected using the questionnaire were divided into two parts: interest and enthusiasm. Both data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to see the association of interest toward enthusiasm. Furthermore, data from each one of the two variables and combined data from both variables were also analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient to find out how both variables as relate toward English achievement. The results show that interest in learning English had a strong significant association toward enthusiasm (r(70)=.77, p=0.00).  Furthermore, both interest and enthusiasm had a significant association toward English achievement (respectively: r(70)=.40, p=0.001; r(70)=.24, p=0.046).  Moreover, the combination of both interest and enthusiasm also showed a strong association toward English achievement (r(70)=.343, p=0.004). This study also provided some implications and recommendations for further research.

Abstract

Abstract: Pronunciation is one of the key factors in communication. An error in pronunciation might cause a miscommunication in meaning. This descriptive analytical descriptive study tries to find pattern in error of the pronunciation of dental fricative consonants (/θ/,/ð/)  by students of English Education Study Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Education Sriwijaya University on the onset, in the middle and coda of a word. A randomly taken sample of 120 students was taken from a population of 240 students of the study program. The sample was asked to pronounce 30 words in which some of the words were distractors and the rest contained the consonants on onset, in medial and coda. The pronunciations were recorded and then analyzed. A native speaker of English was involved in analyzing the errors. The results show that in pronouncing the two consonants the most errors that arise are that they were pronounced as /t/, /d/ which is the closest equivalents of the consonants in Bahasa Indonesia. While other sounds, i.e. /s/, /d/, /θ/, and /ð/, also occurs but in much lower frequency. It is suggested that the result of the study can be used in other similar studies and also used as teaching and learning material in relevant courses.
