Abstract

The success of English language subject is hardly required because the prior of language learning is communication. However, the success itself is not only based on the teacher, method, curriculum but also the package such as syllabus and textbook for delivering materials. Syllabus and textbook refer to the content of what is to be taught and the skills to be mastered. Furthermore, both of them help teacher to provide the materials well and to be relevant into the present context. The goal of this paper is to analyze deeply the English language syllabus design in Our Discovery Island 5–student book published by Pearson Education that is used by the elementary students of grade V in Citra Indonesia school, Bintaro. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative study. The findings show that the syllabus design in this book used the linear format to display the contents which include scope, sequence, integration, articulation and balance. Meanwhile for the syllabus model, it used process model on subject center design.

Abstract

This study is identifying elementary schools teacher attitudes towards video conferencing platform implementation during Covid-19 pandemic. The research aims include (1) to identify teachers’ attitude towards implementing video conferencing platforms for learning (2) to identify teachers' challenges encountered during implementing video conferencing and how to overcome that challenge. The 103 elementary schools teachers were included. The teacher selected by simple random sampling techniques. The questionnaire's content is based on teachers' attitudes toward using video conferencing in the classroom during the COVID-19 epidemic, as measured by the following indicators: efficiency, effectiveness, motivation, and variety of obstacles. The elementary schools teachers’ attitude shows positive responses to video conferencing in learning such as providing various learning activities, providing flexibility in teaching process, easiness to access learning materials, and ease in assessing and monitoring students' learning progress. Furthermore, the result reveals the majority of the elementary schools teachers faced technical issues and availability as obstacles in implementing a video conferencing platform. The majority of elementary schools teachers were able to resolve these technological difficulties by exploring other teaching strategies and seeking professional advice.

Abstract

Merdeka Curriculum or in Indonesian Language known as Kurikulum Merdeka is widely considered as the most popular curriculum applied in many educational institutions in Indonesia. In the context of elementary school, Merdeka curriculum places English Language as an optional subject offered to students. In fact, nowadays students as the future generation live in the digitized and network based community where English plays a critical role to help them adapt to the rapid change of technology and science. Consequently, it is crucial to study this government policy in the Merdeka curriculum on the English language subject for elementary students. This study aims to analyze the government policy on placing the English language as an optional subject in elementary school using the theory of language development and the role of English as lingua franca in the 21st century. This study applies a library research method and data are collected from published and unpublished scientific articles, analytical journals, government reports and national scale newspapers that are relevant to the aims of the study.Keywords: Merdeka Curriculum, English Languange, Elementary School
