Abstract

Education at the higher levels is now encouraged to implement the 21st century learning and outcome-based education to enable the graduates to ready perform at the workplace. Moreover, the English Language Education Study Program of the State University of Jakarta is now undergoing a curriculum renewal to fit the 21st century demands. Thus, this first-year Research and Development (R&D) research design was conducted to develop a media literacy-based and project-based syllabus for the English in Media Discourse subject. Content analysis to the existing syllabus, clarified by the questionnaire and focus group discussion, was done to see the incorporation of the indicators of media literacy based and project-based learning. The results revealed that 48% of media literacy skill indicators were incorporated in the existing syllabus but no project-based activity was available. Therefore, the researcher proposed a syllabus to the subject that could best fit the demand of media literacy skills and implement a project-based learning to fully develop the students’ required skills for the 21st Century English learning. It is hoped that the results of this research can be applied in the Media Discourse related subjects in any universities. This syllabus will furthermore become the framework for the e-module development on the next stage of the research.

Abstract

Abstract: The critical literacy of junior high school students in Indonesia is at level 1a, i.e. they are only able to understand explicit information in identifying main and supporting ideas of the short texts with general themes (PISA, 2018). This requires further handling in the form of training in critical literacy for more complicated texts. This community service activity was aimed at training critical literacy (especially in this case reading) competencies for English teachers at the junior high school level in the region of forefront, outermost and left behind especially related to reading descriptive texts, i.e. the fundamental texts that describe the action for categorization and classification. This activity was carried out with 25 participants of English teachers in Mimika District, Papua. Pre-test were given to participants prior to the workshop. This workshop was conducted in 3.5 hour-time via zoom meeting. The post-test was given after the training completed. The results showed that the experience of teaching and training teachers in Mimika District, Papua, did not show a significant correlation with their basic English skills. The average of pre-test results showed 25% compared to the average of post-test results showed 30% which was an increase of 5%. Thus, it was found that the results were dominated by the conceptual dimension of the participants’ knowledge of English teachers. By this, the participants need further critical literacy training in critically reading the descriptive texts by accentuating the basic English skills as the factor that needs to be further developed prior to critical literacy.

Abstract

Feedback in oral as well as written form from both teachers and peers is commonly practiced in language learning at all levels. However, there are a limited number of researches referring to the effect of peer feedback on essay writing competence. Peer feedback can promote independent learning, yet, it may raise questions on its reliability. This study tries to reveal whether guided peer review gives any significant improvement on young adults' essay writing performance on their achievement test. Eight students of the One Year English Program at LIA Pramuka were involved in several sessions of essay writing activities, followed by peer correcting sessions guided by peer review checklist, and revising sessions. Pre-test and post-test were used to determine the improvement on such aspects of essay writing as organization, content, grammar, and vocabulary. It was found that most participants became more aware of how to write a well-organized and comprehensive essay although few still cannot perform well at the post-test. In contrast, this study revealed that peer checking cannot significantly help the students write well-structured sentences and choose appropriate diction. Since this study involves a small number of students, further research engaging more students and in more varied levels are encouraged.
