Abstract

Abstract:This paper examines Nazi’s politics of sexuality in the Bernhard Schlink’s novel “Der Vorleser”. The novel shows that there is a relation between sexuality and politics.  This study uses Foucault’s theory on sexuality in relation with the state as well as Herzog’s theory on Nazi’s politic of sexuality. The result of the research show that in the novel there are descriptions of Nazi’s politics of sexuality, such as the prohibition on teenage sexuality, the sacralization of sexual activity, the strengthening of identity and gender roles, and the prohibition of premarital sex. Furthermore, the results of the analysis reveal that the sexuality politics is applied by the Nazi government in order to maintain the purity of the German race and show German supremacy over other nations.

Abstract

Abstract: Music was mostly taken as a theme in many works written by Jelinek.  In the Die Klavierspielerin novel  published in 1983, Jelinek took theme of music. The study is aimed at revealing music function  and its links with the main character’s sexuality. This study is based on music function theory introduced by Alan P. Merriam, sexuality theory introduced by Padgug, and sexuality theory concerning power relation introduced by M. Foucault. The  results of analysis indicate that in the novel there are musical functions as symbolic representation used as a reference between characters to repress each other, such as,  mother to Erika as a child, Erika as a teacher to Klemmer as a student.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate and interpret nationalism in Indonesian films for children with local settings. Four films for children –Garuda Di Dadaku (2009), Di Timur Matahari (2011), Serdadu Kumbang (2011), dan Tanah Surga…katanya (2012)- are analyzed with reference to the theoretical assumption of film as a form system covering its language use and mise-en-scène (Bordwell Thomson, 2010). Employing a formal system analysis, aspects of nationalism were constructed and interpreted using Bhabha’s (2000) dissemination theory and a seminal theory of ideology in children and teenagers’ literary texts by Hollindale (1988). Results show that nationalism is presented: 1) through the films’ mise-en-scène which generates attachment to Indonesian nation; 2) in abstract notions through the films interconnection with aspects of humanity, social justice, and unity; 3) the use of children characters’ points of view. The presentation implied that, in the context of building nationalism, the constructed meanings from exposures on nationalism originated in local issues as well as socio-cultural issues have placed children in an instrumental role as the glue in the weaving of Indonesian nationalism. These findings generate three implications: (1) giving inputs about the kind of texts for children which focus on children’s point of view; (2) encouraging the exposure of localities to raise the sense of nationalism; and (3) preparing practical ways to empower film as part of national character building in teaching children.

Abstract

This study was qualitative descriptive, which investigated what kind of gender features emerged for the male and female represented in image of textbook for elementary school. The data of this study were collected from an English textbook entitled “Stairway a fun and easy English textbook (for Grade IV of Elementary Schools”, published by Tiga Serangkai. The data in the present study were in the form of images and texts taken from a textbook. The data were analysed by following the theory of visual grammar by (Kress van Leeuwen, 2006) to analyse the visual text. The study found that there are unequitable gender representations typically because both genders are represented through stereotypical portrayals. Males are represented to dominate language strategies and occupy more public areas, while females are represented to be passive and occupy more private areas. The portrayal of asymmetrical gender representation in the textbook shows that the reflection of the textbook is realized by ideology and inspired by the interest of the society.
