Abstract

This study investigated about persuasive power and rhetorical style in Barrack Obama’s and John McCain’s speeches to answer two problems: how Barrack Obama’s and John McCain’s political speeches conveyed persuasive power as reflected in their rhetorical styles and what the differences of Barrack Obama’s political speeches from John McCain’s speeches are in terms of: persuasive power of the message conveyed and the rhetorical style from eighteen speeches during Presidential Election Campaign of United States in 2008. The researcher used rhetorical criticism as the technique in analyzing the data. The data of the present study were sentences which were considered to have persuasive power that were created by using rhetorical style. Having analyzed the data, the researcher revealed the following findings: (1) The researcher found that both Obama and John McCain used rhetorical style to convey the meaning in their speeches. Yet, they produced the rhetorical style differently in case of the time they brought into the speeches; Obama brought the future but McCain brought the past; (2) Obama had more persuasive power in his speech comparing with John McCain since he produced more frequent and more various rhetorical style.

Abstract

The progress of the development of a region is not only the responsibility of the government, but requires active participation from all components of society. Good collaboration between local government and communities is an important factor in achieving this. This research is a descriptive qualitative type to describe the participation of the Bulukumba community in regional development in East Kalimantan. The research sample is the head of the family or resident's representative in a house that is domiciled in East Kalimantan, as many as 60 people who were selected by accidental sampling. Collecting data using online questionnaires in the form of Google form and distributed to respondents via Whatsapp Group social media and analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of frequency tables and graphs with narration. In addition, to deepen the required information, 3 informants were selected. The technique of collecting information through indepth interviews uses interview guides to informants and is then analyzed qualitatively. The results showed that most of the people of Bulukumba had participated well in regional development in East Kalimantan. Even so, it was still found that the Bulukumba community did not participate in development due to various factors, including a lack of public understanding of the importance of participatory development. Therefore, it is necessary to have active outreach activities from the local government and all components of society regarding the importance of community participation for the realization of advanced and sustainable regional development.

Abstract

Coffee shops or cafes have the potential to create crowds of customers and of course have a high risk of spreading Covid-19. Therefore, research is needed that aims to describe the strategy of cafe managers in preventing the spread of Covid-19 and customer perceptions of this strategy. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. Research informants are cafe managers and loyal customers who are selected by purposive sampling. The research was conducted at the Kastem Coffee, Samarinda City in August 2021. The information collected was analyzed qualitatively. The results obtained information that cafe managers and customers since the pandemic until the research was carried out had still implemented the Covid-19 health protocol. The cafe manager plans to develop models to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the cafe environment through cross subsidies and mutual assistance to fellow customers. Cafe customers agree and support, have not made a choice, and do not agree with the model development plan. The results of this study can be taken into consideration for managers of similar businesses and other types of businesses in supporting business environment free of Covid-19.

Abstract

The study was considered as stylistics analysis because it was purposed to elaborate the features of graphological level and syntactic level that found in Trump’s tweets. In addition, it also discussed about the political issues that raised in his tweets because he was an active user of twitter since his presidency in 2017. This study was conducted at English Department Mulawarman University. The design of this study was qualitative approach which was purposed to classify the tweets into some features of graphological level and syntactic level. It was also used to classify the political issues raised within the tweets. There were found around 368 tweets between November 3rd and December 3rd, 2020. The instruments of the study were the writer herself and the tweets from Trump’s twitter. There were also found some tweets which were not contained the type of the levels and the political issues. Afterward, the data are collected from the tweets and have been triangulated. The first finding of the study indicated the features of graphological level. There were found some features such as full stop, comma, apostrophe, and others. Full stop was the feature of graphological level that was most frequently encountered. It has been detected approximately 614 times within the tweets. Additionally, at the syntactic level, it was discovered that the simple present tense was the most often used tense in the tweets. Trump's tweets contained the feature approximately 220 times. Then, in the following result, it was discovered that election related topics were the most frequently discussed political issues in tweets. During this same period, Trump has tweeted a lot about the electoral landscape. There were around 223 instances of it in the tweets.

Abstract

This study presents an analysis of metaphor on three poems, Invictus, The Road Not Taken and Dreams. The objective of this study is: to find out the types and meaning from three poems. The analyses were based on the combination of Lakoff and Johnson’s theory (2003), and Konvecses’s theory (2010) to find out the kind’s of metaphor and meaning of Invictus, The Road Not Taken, and Dream poems. What is the kind’s of metaphor and meaning of line on Invictus, The Road Not Taken, and Dream poems. In this study, the researcher will use descriptive qualitative research. The findings of this study were directed to know what is the kind’s of metaphor and meaning of Invictus, The Road Not Taken, and Dream poems. Abstract

The purposes of this study are to find the simplification language usage, the vocabulary and structure, and content in unabridged and abridged dialogues of Shakespeare’s Drama: Macbeth. This research used descriptive qualitative research and the script of drama to analyze the dialogue of each character and the language simplification usage, the vocabulary and structure controlled in unabridged and abridged, and the content in abridged version.. The data source that used in this research is a dialogue of Shakespeare’s drama Macbeth in unabridged and abridged version. The result of the reasearch showed that there were simplification of vocabulary, structure and content. Simplification of vocabulary and structure occured inside the language rules while simplification of content occured inside the dialogue content. All the simplification language occured because of the verbs, the length of discursive segments, and the elements of drama

Abstract

This study analyzes the communication style of Americans in novel tilted “The Stars Shine Down” by Sidney Sheldon. It is important to be analyzed because if people control their communication style, they can control the outcome of most interactions and avoid the conflict or misunderstanding that caused by communication problem. The analysis of characters’ communication was based on McCallister’s theory (1994) to determine the patterns of communication style. The patterns were divided into three communication styles. It was Dominant Style which was included Noble, Reflective, and Socratic. Then, Blended Style consisted of Magistrate and Candidate. Also, Dual Style was known as Senator. Furthermore, this study was designed in the form of a content analysis of qualitative design. The source of data was the dialog of the main and supporting characters in the novel “The Stars Shine Down” by Sidney Sheldon which supported by the author’s narrative of novel. Moreover, this study used two validators to increase the credibility of the findings and interpretation the communication style. The results for the research question showed that Magistrate and Senator were mostly used by Lara for communication. Then, Noble was utilized dominantly by Paul in his communication which was influenced by the social status. Meanwhile, other style such as Socratic and Candidate were found in most of Howard‟s interaction. Even if all of the communication styles were reflected to the characters, the difference of frequency figures in using communication style was not too excessive for each style. Also, with using of communication style, both of main and supporting character can control the outcome of interaction. It can be related to students’ communication and material of teaching and learning English Thus, it is important for the students and lecturers to understand communication style in their interaction with foreign language speakers, especially Americans to avoid the misunderstanding of communication and control the outcome of interaction

Abstract

Sebagian besar masyarakat Bulukumba yang merantau ke Kalimantan Timur telah tinggal secara menetap. Meskipun telah meninggalkan kampung halaman dan merantau cukup lama, tetapi masyarakat Bulukumba diharapkan tetap mampu menerapkan dan melestarikan nilai-nilai budaya Sikatutui dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Informan yang dipilih sebanyak empat orang secara purposive sampling dengan kriteria antara lain informan merupakan warga Bulukumba yang telah menetap minimal lima tahun di kabupaten/kota yang tersebar di Kalimantan Timur dan bersedia diwawancarai.Pengumpulan informasi dilakukan melalui wawancara mendalam secara online menggunakan pedoman wawancara pada tanggal 1-5 Desember 2022. Selain itu, peneliti memilih informan kunci yaitu Ketua Kerukunan Keluarga Bulukumba. Pengumpulan data dan informasi dilakukan dengan triangulasi sumber yaitu wawancara mendalam, observasi dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian diperoleh informasi bahwa informan setuju dilestarikannya budaya Sikatutui yang tidak hanya diperuntukkan sesama perantau dari Bulukumba, tetapi juga terhadap masyarakat di lingkungannya. Implementasi nilai budaya Sikatutui di Kalimantan Timur membuat informan tidak merasa sendiri di perantauan dan adanya sikap saling mendukung dalam hal kebaikan.

Abstract

Teacher has an important role in teaching-learning process. Teacher does not only teach the students, but also educates them. A caring teacher has a role to create a positive environment. When the teacher can create a positive environment, the students will feel comfortable and confident to learn the lesson well. This study involved an English teacher who had the criteria of a caring teacher as the subject. The purposes of this study are: (1) To find out the dispositions of a caring English teacher found in SMKN 7 Samarinda (2) To find out students’ perspectives toward their caring English teacher in motivating them in learning English. The design of this study was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were taken from observations and interviews with teacher and students. To identify the dispositions of a caring teacher, a theory by Carloz F. Diaz et al. (2005) was applied. In analyzing the data, the researcher used Miles and Huberman’s Framework (1994). The result of this study showed that (1) There were three dispositions found in the English teacher, they were: respect all students, believe that all children could learn, and classroom for social justice. It meant that the teacher was a caring teacher. By being a caring teacher, the students were more motivated to learn English. (2) Based on students’ perspective, it was shown that the teacher was a caring teacher, and their caring teacher motivated them to learn English better. Students appreciated that their teacher respected them, he often motivated them to learn English, and he was fair and equal to them all

Abstract

Abstrak Maraknya tindakan kriminal di lingkungan masyarakat, seperti pencurian kendaraan bermotor dan korban tabrak lari, mendorong pengurus RT 27 Kelurahan Teluk Lerong Ulu Kota Samarinda melakukan pemasangan Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) di lingkungan warga. Kegiatan pengabdian dilakukan oleh para dosen, pengurus RT dan teknisi CCTV sebanyak sembilan orang. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan warga menggunakan CCTV dalam menjaga keamanan lingkungan dan keselamatan warga setempat. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat meliputi tahapan persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan evaluasi. Pemasangan CCTV dilakukan pada Minggu, 9 Juli 2023 di lingkungan RT 27 Kelurahan Teluk Lerong Ulu Kota Samarinda. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat menunjukkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan pemahaman dan keterampilan warga dalam menggunakan CCTV yang telah berhasil dipasang yang ditandai dengan kemahiran warga mengoperasikan perangkat CCTV dengan baik.
