Abstract

This research is mainly aimed to analyze the structure shift of locative prepositional phrase and its equivalences in Indonesian. The data of this study was taken from the biography of Steve Jobs. This book is published in English as the source language and in Indonesian as the target language. It is only the structure shift of locative prepositional phrase using preposition ‘at’, ‘in’, and ‘from’ is analyzed. The research is done through note taking technique in order to find and collect some data. In analyzing the data, translational identity method was applied that people use for comparing between one language with other language to find and analyze the equivalence (Sudaryanto, 1993). The main theory used to analyze the structure shift in translation of the biography of Steve Jobs is Translation Shift proposed by Catford (1965). The finding shows that the translation shift in this structure shift affects the process of translating locative prepositional phrase. Loss and gain information occurs in the process of translation from source language into target language.

Abstract

Abstract—Project-based learning is an innovative learning model which emphasizes contextual learning through complex activities. Project-based learning focused on learning the core concepts, involving learners in problem-solving investigations and other meaningful tasks, giving students the opportunity to work autonomously construct their own knowledge and ultimately produce a real product. Project-based learning can be used to achieve a certain competency through a project within a specified period through the steps of planning, execution, reporting, communicating the results and evaluation activities. This research was aimed to analyze the use of discourse illustration in writing essay outlines in order to help students in the stage of constructing ideas. This study focused on the use of discourse illustration in the context of teaching English for vocational students with a framework of project-based learning as a basic model. The goal of this method was to improve students’ engagement in writing and ease the obstacles faced when developing ideas. Participants were 28 third semester students enrolled in a three-year undergraduate program in Informatics Management whose English proficiency was lower intermediate. The outlines produced by students were evaluated and discussed in peer review until the drafts were final. The study revealed that students were able to construct a more coherent and cohesive essay and engaged in the completion of the project in a more positive attitude as they could develop their competence in writing and enhance their collaborative skill to work as a team. Abstract

Characteristically flipped learning enables students to utilize their time in class schedule to have discussion and elaborate their analysis especially in writing. The students can obtain learning experience which will shape their English. The research was aimed to determine the effectiveness and impact of flipped learning on developing writing competence of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are 32 fourth semester students majoring in Informatics Engineering STMIK STIKOM Indonesia who are the objects of this research. This research was conducted in the form of CAR (Class Action Research) which included the stages of planning, implementing action, observation and reflection which were carried out in two cycles. This study adopts the three-stage model proposed by Estes et al. (2015) for flipped learning: pre-class, in-class and post-class stages. Quantitative data were acquired from the eventual outcomes of convincing articles arranged by the students when the usage of flipped learning. Quantitative data, especially three kinds of data; (pre-test and post-test 1), (pre-test and post-test 2) and (post-test1 and post-test2) were examined utilizing SPSS 21 statistics. The correlation coefficient (r) for the principal informational index was 0.769 and the subsequent informational index was 0.907. The scope of all the correlation coefficients infers that there is an intensive connection among when the use of flipped learning. In view of the aftereffects of the examination utilizing SPSS statistics 21 with a certainty level of 95%, it is realized that H1 is acknowledged and H0 is dismissed, implying that there is a huge impact on the use of flipped learning in improving students’ writing ability.

Abstract

English at higher education level requires the development of language competence, especially in the development of speaking competence which will be important when it must be applied to communication needs in the industry. To achieve the goal of joining these needs, the use of technology in learning and its evaluation can be one of the determinants of increasing competence. The form of implementation is the assignment of English video presentation which is considered effective in developing competence in the digital and global era as it is today. The stage of creating videos in learning activities can increase student engagement in the lecturing process, increase the effectiveness of the English learning process, stimulate students' creativity and independence, and most importantly foster students' courage to appear and communicate in English. Assessment of the linguistic aspect will help students identify grammatical errors that need to be corrected and improve their verbal skills in English itself. The object of this research is the seventh semester students majoring in Informatics Engineering, STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The technique of collecting data applied in this research is observation. The data is qualitative data and in the form of English video presentations uploaded by students in the Google Classroom application in the online English class which will be analyzed by using descriptive qualitative methods. The analysis of the linguistic aspect includes pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, content, and comprehension. The data obtained will be classified so that students' English competence, especially speaking, can be identified and can be used as the basis for implementing appropriate teaching methods.

Abstract

ABSTRACT ___________________________________________________________________ Flipped learning provides an opportunity for students to use most of the time in class to focus on the discussion process and group work so that students gain experience deep and autonomous learning. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness and impact of implementing flipped learning which includes academic aspects. There were twenty-five four students took part as the object of this study. This study involved delivering material in the learning process for one semester divided into two types of instruction, namely the format of traditional face-to-face lectures and flipped learning in two cycles. Quantitative data were obtained from the results of pre-tests and essays written by students before and after the implementation of the action in the form of the application of flipped learning teaching methods. The results of the pre-test and post-test assessment were analyzed using the SPSS statistical program 21 to analyze the effect of flipped learning on improving student learning achievement. This classroom action research was conducted in two cycles in which the quantitative data, i.e., three set of data including (pre-test and post-test1), (pre-test and post-test2) and (post-test1 and post-test2) were analyzed using SPSS statistic 21. The finding showed that the correlation coefficient (r) of the first data set was 0,856, the second data set was 0,778 and the third data set was 0,889. Based on the interpretation scale of correlation coefficient by Guilford (1965), the range of all the correlation coefficients implies that there is a strong relationship between before and after the treatment of PBL. Based on the result of analysis using SPSS statistics 21 with 95% level of confidence, it was revealed that -tcount < -ttable (-9,007 < -2,06390, -14,105 <-2,06390 and -9,789<-2,06390) for all data set and the significance value of 2-tailed was less than 0,05 (0,000 < 0,05). It can be concluded that H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected signifying that there was a significant effect of flipped learning implementation in improving students’ writing achievement.

Abstract

The educational policy in higher vocational education particularly aims at accommodating the workplace requirements both in the area of practical and soft skills. Self-management, collaborative skill and problem solving are among sought-after soft skills needed to be acquired by the students. Project-based learning provides the incorporation of those skills as it involves series of phases which require students to perform self-directed or autonomous learning. This article presents results of the study concerning the impact of project-based learning implementation to students’ writing achievement. Participants were 64 second semester students from three different classes enrolled in a three-year undergraduate program in Informatics Management. Students were involved in series of project-based learning phases until the final products, i.e., essay with multiple effects and infographic were uploaded into students’ social media account. This classroom action research applied quantitative design and the data including pre-test and post-test scores were analyzed using SPSS statistic 21. Paired-sample t-test was used to analyze whether or not there was a significant difference in students’ English writing achievement before and after being taught using PBL. The study revealed that students gained higher mean score in their second essay and there was a strong impact of PBL in improving students’ achievement in writing. Considering the positive result of this study, PBL is recommended to be applied in teaching English for students in higher vocational education as it gives beneficial impact on students’ content learning and soft skills.
