Abstract

This research aims to elucidate the reason behind the decline of villagers’ enthusiasm toward the Ulur-ulur  ritual. Ulur-ulur ritual is a surviving agrarian ritual that was initially an integral part of and executed by four villages, including the Village of Sawo, Ngentrong, Gedangan, and Gamping Tulungagung Regency, as a manifestation of gratitude for the water of Buret Lake sustaining local’s agricultural activity. Historically, this ritual was dying in 1965, then revitalized in 1966 by the Paguyuban Sendang Tirto Mulyo. Currently, despite being set as the annual agenda of Tulungagung Tourism and officially acknowledged as an intangible cultural heritage by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia in 2020, the villagers' enthusiasm remains low. To uncover this phenomenon, this research employed an ethnographic approach. In-depth interviews and participatory research were executed to obtain data. The result showed that the ritual was constructed and operated by two memories: dhanyangan (ancestral spirit) and agricultural memories. However, the impact of the G-30-S tragedy escalated the tension in the society leading to the vandalism of the Sri-Sedono statues, which were the mnemonic device of agricultural memory. Meanwhile, the dhanyangan memory, constantly amplifying, created a clash with the more religious society’s narrative. The long vacuum period and the narrative shift make the association of ritual with the dhanyangan grow more robust, which contradicts the current social context. Furthermore, the revitalization, which was merely rooted in “defeated memory” led to the exclusion of the ritual from society.

Abstract

Museums are the most representative example of cultural production. Although social media has triggered the attention of scholars, no previous study has classified the main ways in which social media affect museums. Museums must adapt to changing practices and technologies to remain relevant in society. Meanwhile, no transformation has been more visible than the emergence of digital technology such as social media. To preserve Indonesia's indigenous culture, Museum Nasional held a program called “belajar menari” online. This was done online due to the Covid-19 pandemic which not only hit Indonesia but also the world. In Indonesia, during covid-19 pandemic, society is required to #stayathome by the Government. To find out how the contents of the Museum Nasional’s Instagram became an e-publication, the researchers compiled data about the museum program “belajar menari” online during July to September 2021 period. The research aimed to explore Instagram content as a medium of historical education. To define the message's features, a qualitative descriptive content analysis was used as the research approach. The result of this research indicated that this program can indirectly increase the sense of nationalism as well as preserve Indonesian culture.

Abstract

Children with autism, like children in general, also have experienced sexual development. The unique condition of children with autism (ASD) sometimes makes them engage in inappropriate sexual behavior and become vulnerable to sexual violence. Therefore, sexual education for children with autism is crucial and urgent. A team conducted this community service in January 2020 to provide social stories and PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) as alternative teaching materials for sex education to children with autism at Rumah Autis Depok. The methods used were pre-observation, unstructured discussion and interview, implementation preparation, implementation, and monitoring. They quickly understood the message intended from PECS and social stories. The sex education materials showed differences in male and female bodies, sexes, and reproductive functions. This material is the starting material in sex education. Continuity using the same learning tools, namely social stories and PECS, is therefore required. Our monitoring process shows that Rumah Autis Depok continues to use social stories and PECS in their sex education lessons

Abstract

This research aims to explain the hidden narrative in the slametan of the ulur-ulur ritual at Telaga Buret, Sawo Village, Campurdarat District, Tulungagung Regency. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the long sequences of ulur-ulur rituals were summarized by only conducting slametan. This indicates that the main foundation of the ulur-ulur ritual is slametan. To find the core ideology of slametan, this study employed the ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participatory research and in-depth interview. The collected data were then transcribed and analyzed using related theories. This research shows that in slametan, syncretic narratives are beautifully woven into the ritual. An assortment of narratives from Islam and other religions or beliefs is represented in the offerings served during the ritual. Each offering is addressed specifically to a particular supernatural entity through ujub. This harmonious assortment shows that the Javanese people have a high degree of adaptability when it comes to adjusting their religious practices to inevitable social changes.
