Abstract

This paper aims to explore the parental perception of parenting education of language politeness held in the village hall of Kwasen, one of the villages in the sub-district of Kesesi, Pekalongan regency. Qualitative interviews were conducted with five parents of children aged 4 – 10 years, following the seminar. The finding showed that most of them get new knowledge about how to educate their children about language politeness, especially in familiarizing the use of magic words including: thank you, please, excuse me, as well as sorry in daily communication. In conclusion, following parenting education, especially in the case of language politeness can be said as necessary for parents. Therefore, this study contributes to providing some ways that can help parents in introducing polite speech acts including magic words to their children in their daily communications.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Numbered Heads Together and Three Minutes Review techniques on students’ vocabulary mastery. It used quantitative approach with factorial design. It involved the seventh graders of Simbang Wetan Islamic Junior High School Pekalongan that were chosen through purposive sampling. Class 7A that consisted of 25 students was considered as the experimental group, and they were taught by using Numbered Heads Together. On the other hand, class 7B that consisted of 27 students was considered as the control group, and they were taught by using Three Minutes Review. The methods of data collection of this study were observation, questionnaire, and test. Based on the calculation of the research result, it showed that Ftable = 4.26 and Fcount = 17.39. Because Fcount > Ftable, so Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. It can be concluded that there is significant difference between the post-test score of experimental group and control group. In other words, Numbered Heads Together is more effective than Three Minutes Review in teaching vocabulary for high and low achievers.

Abstract

Multicultural awareness is one of pivotal things for English teachers. English teachers who teach a language linking people around the world with many differences, should have a good understanding of multicultural awareness so that they can be an excellent example for the students of how to behave well to people with different cultural background. The aim of this study is to describe Indonesian English teachers’ multicultural awareness in teaching multicultural students and explore the influencing factors of English teachers’ multicultural awareness in teaching multicultural students. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach. The data were collected through interviewing the English teachers and some students having different multicultural background as well as observing the English learning process. The gathered data were analysed using steps of Miles and Huberman. The research result shows that the English teachers of the two pesantren-based schools have good multicultural awareness by showing good cultural empathy, open-mindedness, emotional stability, social initiatives, flexibility, and self-efficacy toward multiculturalism. This condition is encouraged by the teachers’ knowledge about multiculturalism and the school leaders supporting solid relationships among the cultural differences. The result of this study is supposed to be able to build English teachers’ awareness of how to show multicultural attitudes at school.

Abstract

Moderate values of Tawasuth, Tawazun, and Tasamuh are the values of ASWAJA which means fair, balance, and tolerance. Those values are believed to be able to build the unity of Indonesia. Therefore, those values are appropriate to be revitalized as life guidance in all aspects including educational environment. One of the alternative ways in implementing those values in education is by internalizing them in all learning process, including English learning. This article aims to describe the internalization process of the moderate values of Tawasuth, Tawazun, Tasamuh in the English learning process of some madrasah in Pekalongan regency, especially those which is developed by Ma’arif NU. This study was conducted by using a qualitative approach. The data were collected through an interview, observation, as well as documentation. The research result shows that those values are internalized mostly in the opening activities, especially in the apperception step. In its internalization process, all of the English teachers use transinternal strategy, action and comprehension approach, reflective method, as well as clarification technique. In short, it can be concluded that moderate values can be internalized implicitly in the English learning process through additional explanation in the apperception step. This study contributes to share the idea of the importance of moderate values internalization in English learning process as well as how to internalize them in real context of English learning.
