Abstract

This paper aims to explore the parental perception of parenting education of language politeness held in the village hall of Kwasen, one of the villages in the sub-district of Kesesi, Pekalongan regency. Qualitative interviews were conducted with five parents of children aged 4 – 10 years, following the seminar. The finding showed that most of them get new knowledge about how to educate their children about language politeness, especially in familiarizing the use of magic words including: thank you, please, excuse me, as well as sorry in daily communication. In conclusion, following parenting education, especially in the case of language politeness can be said as necessary for parents. Therefore, this study contributes to providing some ways that can help parents in introducing polite speech acts including magic words to their children in their daily communications.

Abstract

This article discusses about character analysis of a story as a part of Extensive Reading to engage students in reading activity. The writer used qualitative approach to conduct this research by analyzing their works and arguments after the task given, and there were 95 students of English Education Department as the participants. In order to get the data, there were two main sources, the students’ analysis and their written comments on the work. To maintain the concept of Extensive Reading, the students had to read the story and gave their analysis freely on a paper. They also had to write their comment toward the story in several sentences. The result revealed that students could express their ideas and creativity on the paper as well as their capability in creating English sentences. Besides, they could increase their self-confidence because of their ability in reading and analyzing the English story.

Abstract

This present study aims to explore Institut Agama Islam Negeri Pekalongan students’ perceptions regarding the implementation of combining the features of face-to-face instruction and online learning via Edmodo learning management system (LMS) called blended learning (BL) in their large English class. This research was conducted in the class consisted of 46 students who took English III course at the university. The participants completed three types of open-ended questionnaires. The findings reveal that the implementation of BL had a positive effect on perceived quality and student satisfaction in the teaching and learning processes. Most of the students commented that the implementation of BL helped make the course and activities interesting because of the technology integration in their large class. BL, likewise, encouraged them to enhance their language skills, particularly reading and writing. These results illustrate that the language skills could be also improved by incorporating the tremendous advancement of technology as a part of language instruction. Meanwhile, another finding reports that BL might have a better impact on the students’ level of engagement since most of the research participants rated themselves as more engaged in this blended course. Abstract

This study investigates three problems, which are the practice of Grammar Translation Method (GTM) in English learning for current students, the students’ attitude on learning English using GTM, and characteristics of students which are best taught using this method. In order to get the data, this study used a qualitative approach to analyze the data and it is a kind of case study. The researcher observed the classroom activity and delivered the questionnaire to the students. After getting the result and analyzing the data, this study draws some conclusions. First, GTM is still effective and needed to teach English to current students. Second, not only passive, but also active students who can take benefits from the implementation of this traditional method because it does not perform pure passive learning, but it is also adjusted with the current students’ characteristics. Third, both fast and slow learners are able to follow the lecturer’s instruction when he teaches using GTM because this method accommodates what the slow learners need to achieve the learning goals. Abstract

Moral value is one of the parts in a story which can be learned and adapted by students. Stories are classified into several kinds depending on their contents. There are two classifications of stories taught in the ninth grade of Junior High School: Indonesian and western stories, and both of them creates different characteristics and teaching practice of the stories, as well as their moral values. This case study investigated the Indonesian and western stories used in the ninth grade of Junior High School, as well as the moral values conveyed in the stories and how the teachers teach the students those different moral values. This study analyzed the stories contained in the ninth graders’ textbook and interviewed three teachers from different junior high schools related to their teaching practice. After analyzing the data, it was revealed that there are only two Indonesian stories and four western stories as the material in the ninth grade of junior high school’s textbook; those Indonesian and western stories have different characteristics of moral values in several aspects as the result of the classification of the stories; and the different classification of the stories bear the different treatments in teaching moral values contained in the stories.

Abstract

Comprehension is an important aspect of every reading activity. Through reading comprehension, readers can understand the content or passage of a text. Nevertheless, many students still experience the difficulties in their English reading comprehension. This study aimed to reveal the Indonesian and Egyptian EFL university students’ difficulties in reading comprehension as well as its causative factors. This study involved two EFL students who are majoring in English Education in semester five. This study used a qualitative method with a narrative inquiry design. Semi-structured interview was implied to collect the data. This study helped to develop the theory of Nuttall (2008) and Alderson (2005) about the difficulties in reading comprehension and the causative factors of its difficulties. Thematic analysis by Barkhuizen, Benson, and Chick was used to analyze the data. The result of this study showed that there were several difficulties faced by the Indonesian and Egyptian EFL university students in reading comprehension. They were namely difficulty in understanding word meaning, understanding long sentences, determining the main idea and making the inference. The next finding reported the factors that caused the students’ difficulties were lack of language knowledge, lack of interest, lack of concentration, and the length of the text.
