Abstract

Introduction: Early menarche is increasing throughout the world, including in Indonesia. The average age of early menarche in Indonesia is less than 10 years based on the results of Riset Kesehatan Dasar or Basic Health Research 2013. Early menarche can cause stress, cardiovascular disease, and the risk of breast cancer. Early menarche can be influenced by various factors, one of which is nutritional status which can be assessed by body mass index.Objective: To determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and Menarche Age in elementary school “X” in Krian.Method: This study used a cross-sectional research design, conducted on a population of elementary school children in grades IV-VI aged 9-12 years at primary school “X” in Krian with the inclusion criteria being School Health Unit (Unit Kesehatan Sekolah or UKS) data and the exclusion criteria being having chronic diseases. Data analysis was carried out using the Spearman Correlation test.Results: 49 samples were obtained consisting of 7 people in class IV, 14 people in class V, and 28 people in class VI. From the sample, 8 children had a low BMI (16.3%), 30 children had a normal BMI (61.3%), and 11 children had a high BMI (22.5%). Meanwhile, for early menarche 6 people (12.2%), normal menarche 43 people (87.8%), and no late menarche (0%) obtained a p-value = 0.616 (p>0.05). The percentage of early menarche in obese BMIs is higher than in other BMIs with a percentage of 6.1%.Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between body mass index and age at menarche due to the small number of samples.

Abstract

Background: Around 2 – 3% of children in Indonesia experience febrile seizures. Factors that can increase the risk of febrile seizures is viral infection and nutritional status. Malnourished in children increase the incidence of febrile seizures in children.Objective: To analyze the relationship between nutritional status and simple febrile seizures in children aged 6 months to 5 years at PHC Hospital in Surabaya.Method: The study utilized a retrospective observational analytical design with a case control research method on inpatients with fever at PHC Hospital in Surabaya from January 2019 to September 2023, involving a total of 2,464 patients. Data were extracted from medical records and selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 105 samples in the case group and 758 samples in the control group, meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Thirty-seven samples were randomly selected from each group using simple random sampling. Statistical analysis employed the C contingency coefficient test.Results: Among patients with simple febrile seizures at PHC Hospital in Surabaya, 8,1% were severe thinness, 29,8% were thinness, 48,6% had normal, 8,1% were at risk of overweight, 2,7% were overweight, and 2,7% were obese. The fever without seizures group showed no severe thinness, 5,4% were thinness, 86,5% had normal, 2,7% were at risk of overweight, 5,4% were overweight, and no obese. Based on the statistical analysis using the C contingency coefficient test, the p-value was 0,008 (p<0,05), indicating a correlation between nutritional status and simple febrile seizures in children aged 6 months to 5 years at PHC Hospital in Surabaya.Conclusion: There is a correlation between nutritional status and simple febrile seizures in children aged 6 months to 5 years at PHC Hospital in Surabaya.

Abstract

Microplastics (plastic particles <5 millimeters in diameter) have become a novel food contaminant for humans.Microplastics was estimated that children consume 106-113 microplastics per day and 126-142 particles in adults.The main prevention effort is to identify the presence of plastic particles in food, one of which is sugar. Microplasticsthat are in the digestive tract can enter the bloodstream and distributed to other parts of the body. These particlescannot be destroyed by the body's cellular mechanisms, thus triggering inflammation, genotoxicity, hypersensitivity,oxidative stress, and cell death. The aim of the study was to measure the number of particles, shape and diameter ofplastic particles as contaminants in refined sugar produced in Indonesia. Quantitative descriptive research using 16sugar brands that are produced, known and widely consumed in Indonesia. The research was carried out at theClinical Pathology Laboratory, Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University. Quantification of the number, shapeand diameter of plastic particles using a microscope. The examination results showed that all sugar samples containedplastic particles between 5-100 MPs/50 gram of sugar, most of the contaminants were in the form of pellets, and thelargest particle diameter was 367µm.
