Abstract

Listening is one of the important language skills in learning English because it is a receptive skill that provides language input for students. However, in reality students still experience many difficulties when learning listening, as well as the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Praya. This research was aimed to find out students’ achievement in learning listening at the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Praya, to find out the difficulties experienced by students in learning listening and to find out the factors that cause these difficulties. This research used descriptive qualitative method. Out of 121 eleventh grade students, only 44 students were selected as a sample using a simple random technique. The data were collected through test, questionnaire and interview. The results of this study showed that students’ achievement in listening is very poor. Students’ difficulties in listening such as: unfamiliar words, complexities of grammatical structures, long spoken materials, unfamiliar topics, listening without repetition, the way speakers pronounces words, unable to quickly remember words or phrases they had just heard, the speed and accents of the speakers, focus of the students, environmental noises, and quality of recorded material. Then, the factors that cause these difficulties are lack of students practicing listening, students’ lack of vocabulary mastery, students’ lack of motivation, and noisy environment.

Abstract

English vocabulary is crucial for students' language proficiency in reading, speaking, listening, and writing. To increase vocabulary, teachers can use effective techniques, such as incorporating English songs into the curriculum. This research aims to assess the impact of using songs for vocabulary instruction on 40 students from SMK Negeri 2 Gerung. They were split into an experimental class (X-TEI) exposed to English songs and a control class (X-TOI) using flashcards.After the treatment, post-test scores showed significant differences between the two classes. The experimental class scored 80.25, while the control class scored 66.75. Data analysis in SPSS demonstrated a substantial difference in vocabulary mastery (sig 2-tailed < 0.05) between the two groups. Hypothesis testing confirmed the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha) and rejection of the Null Hypothesis (Ho). In conclusion, incorporating English songs effectively improved students' vocabulary mastery in class X at SMK Negeri 2 Gerung during the academic year 2022-2023.

Abstract

The use of Instagram nowadays has been widely expanded as a source to learn English by the huge number of EFL students. The most popular use of Instagram these days is to learn vocabulary. The account facilitated the English learners the materials for learning. The object of the study was to investigate the Students Perception upon the Use of English Learning Account on Instagram which in this case of study was the account of Global English Pare as a Mobile Learning Resource to Learn English Vocabulary, employed using a descriptive qualitative method with online questionnaire, interview, and documentation as the instruments. The data were collected from second semester English students of E2D class at University of Mataram. The participants in this study were chosen using the cluster sampling technique which resulted in selecting 30 members of English second semester students of University of Mataram. It can be inferred that the student's perception towards Global English Pare account was varied and they dominantly presented positive opinions about the platform which indicated the good reflection upon their experience of using the platform as media to learn vocabulary. The majority of students found the account was very effective to develop their vocabulary mastery by portraying several personal positive reasons recorded in the interview section. Meanwhile, it was also found by the students the few numbers of difficulties during their activities using the platform.
