Abstract

This study aimed to study the effect of malaka leaf ethanolic extract (Phyllanthus emblica) on the sperm quality of mice. As many as 16 male mice weighing between 25-30 g were used in this study. Ethanolic extract of malaka leaves was given by oral once a day for 21 days. Mice were randomly divided into 4 groups consinted of 4 mice each. Control group (P0) was given distilled water, group P1, P2, P3 were administered ethanolic extract of malaka leaves with the dosage of 300 mg/kg bw, 600 mg/kg bw, and 1200 mg/kg bw respectively. At 21st day after the treatment, the male mice was sacrificed and spermatozoa in cauda epydidimis was collected to evaluate the quality of sperm. The parameters of sperm quality including sperm motility, viability, morphology, and consentration. The result of this study showed that ethanolic extract of malaka leaves had the propensity to decrease sperm quality of all parameters, but not significantly different in statistics (P˃0,05). Therefore, it can be concluded that malaka leaf extract might decrease sperm quality of mice.
