Abstract

A proper speaking test may pose challenges to teachers due to suboptimal assessment literacy and the laborious administration of a speaking test. Technology can help alleviate the labor while enabling teachers to ascertain the accuracy and validity of the speaking test. In this direction, this study aims to develop a videoconferenced English-speaking test (henceforth VEST) with the aid of videoconferencing technology. Aligned with the empirics on the use of technology for speaking assessment, this study addresses the gapping void in how videoconferencing technology can be harnessed to escalate the practicality and positive impacts of a classroom-based speaking test in an Indonesian EFL setting. The development adhered to the ADDIE framework involving Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The test prototype was evaluated using a test usefulness analysis framework. The evaluation results were coupled with reflection results of test takers’ experiences to guide test revision. Given the small sample size, this study has unveiled the potential of VEST to improve the praxis of speaking assessment and the resultant test takers’ experience. Implications and recommendations for future studies are also discussed.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the level of senior high school English teachers’ knowledge of intercultural values. The study was concerned with the English teachers’ knowledge of intercultural value which is using a quantitative method, specifically, a survey study because it helped to describe the attitude, opinions, behaviors, or characteristics of the population. In this study, the participants included 66 in-service Senior High School English teachers from different public school around Jember from the total number 207 of senior high school English teachers in Jember. The participant selected was using random sampling by delivering the questionnaire to all of Senior High School English teachers in Jember. The data of this study used Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) which contains 20-item scales. The result of this study showed that among four dimensions of CQS, all of them got high level of senior high school English teachers’ knowledge of intercultural value which in this case very important for teachers to communicate across various culture

Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the difficulties and ineffectiveness of teaching translation and gaining significant development from the students. It highlights the use of popular media in the form of audio-visual to reinforce English grammatical structures as well as its cultural aspects for the students' better comprehension in English to Indonesian translation skill. The implementation of classroom action research that includes using audiovisual media to enhance their translation skill and it’s effectively was further determined through observation and close analysis. The data was analyzed using an analytical scoring rubric to present the results of pre/post tests and classroom observation. The average of the post-test score was 79.15, indicating an improvement after the implementation of using teenage American sitcom as learning media for translation skill in the aspect of grammatical equivalence. This suggests that alternative media learning with audiovisual elements as the American teenage sitcom "Sam and Cat" was effective in teaching translation with grammametric equation. This is evidence of how the implementation process and teacher's guidance can help students improve the material and understand the concept of using audio visual media as learning medium better. The results of this study are expected reliable and solid research source for the other researchers in the same field of education in the future, especially in the topic of determining the method in enhancing students' ability in language translation.
