Abstract

Jamu is still the choice of Indonesian people as an alternative to modern medicine until now. As a cultural heritage of the Indonesian, jamu is still very popular from the west to the east of Indonesia. The enthusiasm of the Indonesian in consuming jamu has encouraged many traditional medicine industries to produce jamu with many kinds of claim. Jamu "X" is claimed to help maintain body health. This research was conducted to determine the total flavonoid content in jamu "X" calculated as rutin by UV-spectrophotometric method with aluminum chloride (AlCl3) reagent. Jamu "X" is a product with new formula that is expected to be marketed soon. The determination of the maximum absorbance wavelength of rutin was carried out at a wavelength of 400-800 nm and the resulting maximum absorbance wavelength of rutin was 416.5 nm. The determination of total flavonoid calculated as rutin determined using a linear regression equation from the rutin standard. The linear regression equation was determined from a rutin standard curve series with 10; 12.5; 15; 17.5 and 20 g/ml, respectively and the linear regression equation obtained y = 0.0275x + 0.093. The results of the determination of rutin in the jamu "X" were 1.474%; 1.474% and 1.469% with an average value of 1.472%.

Abstract

Since ancient times, jamu have been used to treat various diseases. Recently, the number of jamu has increasing and this has led several manufacturers to commit fraud. They added drug substances (DS) into jamu for gaining the effect of jamu so that can raise the sales of jamu in market . The addition of DS into herbal medicine is a violation of the regulation issued by The Ministry of Health. Such practices can cause side effects that are very dangerous for health. The purpose of this research is to analyze the presence of DS in jamu samples that are frequently consumed and circulated in Kranggan, Temanggung and Magelang city. Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) was employed to detect the presence of prednisone, paracetamol, and mefenamic acid. The working principle of the separation of compounds with TLC is to separate samples based on the partition difference between samples and the solvent used. In this case, the stationary phase used is the silica gel plate GF254 with the mobile phase for prednisone using ethyl acetate:chloroform (4:1), mefenamic acid using chloroform:methanol (9:1),and paracetamol using chloroform:ethanol (8:1). As a result of qualitative analysis, jamu samples in those areas do not contain any drug substances that were suspected to be present. Keywords: jamu, prednisone, paracetamol, mefenamic acid

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Obat Tradisional, Parasetamol, Asam Mefenamat, Prednison, Natrium Diklofenak Traditional medicines are mixtures or concoctions made from substances such as plants, animals, minerals, herbal preparations, or combinations of these substances that have been utilized for therapeutic purposes for many years. Herbal remedies for stiff and aching muscles are one of the ancient treatments that are in high demand by the general public. Producers have been forced to directly add Medicinal Chemicals to their products as a result of the rising market demand for herbal medicine. The goal of this study was to determine whether herbal products used to treat rheumatic pain in Wonosobo City included any medicinal chemicals. Abstract

Jamu is a traditional Indonesian medicine. Herbal medicine for rheumatism and “pegal linu” is one of the most widely consumed types of traditional medicinal products by the public, so it is a type of traditional medicinal preparation that is prone to the addition of chemical drugs (BKO). All types of traditional medicines are prohibited from containing isolated or synthetic chemicals with medicinal properties. Samples of rheumatism and “pegal linu” jamu were purchased from Grobogan, Central Java, and Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta. Two samples were purchased from Grobogan, while four samples were purchased from Gunungkidul. The standards used were mefenamic acid, phenylbutazone, and diclofenac sodium. Qualitative analysis was carried out using thin-layer chromatography and quantitative analysis using UV-visible spectrophotometry. Validation of the analytical method is carried out by setting four parameters: linearity, precision, limit of detection, and limit of quantitation. Information about the content of BKO in traditional medicines circulating in the Grobogan and Gunungkidul areas, as well as references to valid analytical methods, will greatly assist the government and academics in educating the public about the dangers of long-term consumption of traditional medicine with BKO. The results showed that three of the six samples contained BKO, and the analytical method was valid.
