Abstract

Fruits and vegetables are essential for human life. Maintaining the quality and safety of fruits and vegetables are critical challenges for the food packaging industry in this decade. Chitosan and starch are most widely used for food packaging as they bring unique properties for packaging applications. Chitosan has good antimicrobial properties but weak water vapor permeability. Meanwhile, starch has a better water vapor barrier but has poor mechanical properties. This paper discusses the application of chitosan and starch blends in the field of films and coatings. Several characteristics, such as mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial properties, solubility, and water vapor permeability, are also discussed. This review also discussed several applications of chitosan-starch-based films and coatings for the preservation of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract

Environmental education needs to be introduced early on to students from elementary school so that it becomes a provision for every student to have a caring attitude in protecting the environment so that the earth remains sustainable. One of the efforts was carried out through ecoenzyme training for elementary school residents and training students in organic waste management to be useful again. This activity was carried out in the Telkom Padang Elementary School (SD), Padang City, West Sumatra. It consists of two stages of activity, namely counseling on organic waste management and the practice of making ecoenzyme. The implementation of these activities went well for three months from November 2022 to February 2023. The results of this activity were educating elementary school students about the importance of preserving the environment by processing waste into ecoenzymes and forming a positive character of loving the environment from an early age in students and residents school.

Abstract

Sifat-sifat fisik dari buah dapat digunakan untuk mendesain sistem maupun mesin yang dapat digunakan dalam proses pascapanen seperti penyortiran dan pengelompokkan. Penelitian ini memiliki fokus dalam mengembangkan model matematis untuk memprediksi massa dari buah markisa manis (Passiflora ligularis Juss) berdasarkan sifat fisiknya. Semua sifat fisik memiliki hubungan yang signifikan terhadap massa (p<0.01). Model matematis dibuat dengan model linier dan kuadratik. Koefisien determinasi dari model menunjukkan tingkat kecocokan dari model. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa model kuadratik memiliki kecocokan yang lebih baik dibandingkan model linier. Model linier terbaik adalah model dengan sifat fisik panjang dengan koefisien determinasi 0.59, sedangkan model kuadratik terbaik adalah model dengan sifat area proyeksi tegak lurus panjang dengan koefisien determinasi 0.62. Nilai koefisien determinasi dari semua model yang berada di sekitar 0.6 menunjukkan bahwa model matematis yang dibuat tergolong moderat.
