Abstract

Social reason means because there are people or society who should benefit from what is done. The knowledge possessed by lecturers or academics must be used for society. One of the ways to make this knowledge accessible to the public is that lecturers or academics must write it down in the mass media. Mass media is a term that began to be used in the 1920s for a type of media designed to reach a very broad community, often shortened to media. An article published in the mass media is usually referred to as a popular article. The problem is that not every lecturer or academician is able to write popular articles to be published in the mass media. That is why training in writing popular articles was necessary and important to be held, including for lecturers or academics at Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The training was attended by 72 registered lecturers from various faculties: Medicine, Pharmacy, Economics, Dentistry, Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MIPA), Public Health, Information Technology, Agriculture, Agricultural Technology, Nursing, Social and Political Sciences (ISIP), and Animal Science.

Abstract

Using used cooking oil in culinary harms human health because this oil is carcinogenic due to being easily oxidized when it is isogenic. In addition, if used cooking oil becomes waste from household kitchens, it will hurt the earth in the form of the environment. The use of simple technology can help recycle used cooking oil into laundry or body soap, a product that can also be used for daily household needs by the community. The Andalas University community engagement team conducted the training through an online workshop based on the Zoom application on June 4, 2020, which 133 participants attended. The speaker processed used cooking oil with NaOH solution and natural dyes (according to the dose) directly in front of the participants. The participants practised it in their respective homes. Discussions between participants and speaker were conducted interactively, guided by a workshop moderator. At the end of the session, the speaker and participants could demonstrate the soaps recycled from used cooking oil in their respective kitchens. The follow-up to the activity was creating and managing WhatsApp groups as a forum for proactive communication with related topics. Creative participants produce soaps, which can be used for families, reducing daily expenses. It was recommended that the best-produced soaps could also be marketed to the public.

Abstract

Waste that is not managed properly can cause the environment to become dirty and cause silting of the river which results in flooding. The amount of waste production is in line with the large number of residents, the higher the population growth rate, the higher and the rate of waste production. Waste management cannot only be done downstream, but also starts from upstream. Many programs have been carried out in waste management, one of which is a waste bank. The waste bank program encourages people to do sorting before depositing inorganic waste in the waste bank. Inorganic waste that can be recycled, such as plastic bottles used for mineral water, can be economically valuable by being put in a tube in a waste bank, while organic waste such as vegetable and fruit residues can be further processed into eco-enzymes. This activity aims to transfer knowledge and technology for processing organic waste into eco-enzymes, so that the community can participate in preserving the earth. The method of activities carried out was counseling and demonstration. This activity achieved the target in accordance with the objectives; this can be seen from the participation and enthusiasm of the community during the activity.

Abstract

Abstract

This condition can be measured at various levels at the individual, household, community and regional levels. The agroecology field school activities were held in two locations: Lubuk Gadang Selatan and Sako Utara Pasia Talang, West Sumatra. The material presented at the extension activity includes Introduction to Agricultural Science, Agroecology, Basics of Agricultural Ecosystems, Food Sovereignty, Cultivation and Breeding Techniques, Plant Maintenance, Fundamentals of Soil Science, Irrigation Management, Plant Breeding and Post Harvest.

Abstract

The ideal entrepreneur figure requires human qualities that can be competitive. Upgrading humans into functional beings is insufficient to provide intelligence, skills or technical expertise. The primary priority needed is to build a good mental attitude. The training activity for making tomato jam is an opportunity for the orphanage children to increase their knowledge with the hope that their abilities and knowledge will develop and be applied in their lives. The motivation given to the training activities made the children feel that being a child in an orphanage was not an obstacle to continuing to develop. This service activity aims to educate orphanage children with training in making tomato jam as a provision for entrepreneurship. This community service activity was carried out in two stages, including lectures for delivering material and demonstrations of making tomato jam by the service team for orphanage children.
