Abstract

The power or knowledge relations determine sexuality as a discourse. How understanding and practicing sex is the negotiation of knowledges and interests. It also happens in producing discourse of sexuality to adolescence. The social construction of adolescence as social category that is apolitical, hedonic, passive and uncritical brings them to be the older people’s object of socialization and education about morality. Different social institutions, such as school, family, religion, government, and also media attempt to subjugate adolescense’ passion in the name of sex education. This research has revealed on how the discourse of sexuality becomes arena where interests of some institutuions involved are contesting. Hai magazine is chosen as locus since this magazine has existed more than three decades and presented sex education as the material in its publication. Using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, this research has explored the discourse of sexuality as the result of negotiation of the discourse of sex sacralization brought by social and religion norms, the idea of global sexual revolution, and the perspective of health reproduction. It becomes Hai’s survival strategy in economy, social and political context.

Abstract

Abstract

Social media is a platform used by feminist activists for activism. It overcomes spatial and temporal barriers, and helps spread the movement's message more quickly and efficiently. The participatory culture encourages the feminist movement to develop more massively. Many argue that social media helps feminist activists to empower women. Related to the statement, this study observes how activism practices in social media represent women's voices and problems. This study also seeks to reveal the problems in the movement. The researcher observed five accounts of feminist activists on Instagram (@Indonesiafeminis, @lawanpatriarki, @perempuanfeminis, @muslimahfeminis, @perempuan.merdeka). Through the virtual ethnography method, the researcher found a representation problem when digital feminist accounts published the problems experienced by women through their content. These accounts only represent middle-class women's problems. There is also an ethical problem because these accounts tend to be reactive by ignoring the ethics of doing activism.

Abstract

Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan (2019), a film directed by Ernest Prakasa, is successful in reaching the box office, with an attracting audience of more than 2 million. This film is an adaptation of a novel with the same title written by Meira Anastasia and Ernest Prakasa. This film has the potential to educate the audience about the body and the dangers of body shaming, but eventually, it just gets back to mere commercialization. Instead of changing the mindset, what is happening is precisely upholding today’s beauty standards.

Abstract

This article is motivated by the phenomenon of the ownership of multiple accounts on Instagram among teenagers. Previous research mentioned that a second Instagram account is used to express oneself without worrying that the identity of the users will be recognized by the public. Users feel they can upload anything on Instagram’s second accounts without following Instagram rules’ pressure of perfection. The second accounts become a sphere for users to perform their self-authenticity. The researchers inquire how teenagers use and manage their multiple Instagram accounts as a sphere for exploring themselves. Reflecting on the practice of surveillance between users through social media, including Instagram, the researchers argue that second Instagram accounts function as the sphere for pseudo-liberations for its users. Hence, the researchers also question how freedom is experienced in that sphere. The researchers use digital ethnography to get the answers to the questions. As a result, since the self is socially constructed and self-authentic, the researchers found that second accounts are not liberating their users. The constructed self-authenticity has shifted from the control of their parents and other adults; to their peers’ surveillance.

Abstract

Instagram is often used to resist negative stigma and discrimination for the homosexual because of its characteristics: dispersal, decentralized, and easily used. It encourages the homosexual to convey their ideas broadly, just the same as the straight people as the majority do. One of the examples is the @alpantuni account on Instagram. This account is trying to describe the life of becoming gay as the effect of a public understanding that being gay is a taboo. The account uses comic stripe with satire, Alpantuni as the main character of the comic stripe is a Muslim gay. I argue that this comic becomes the media to resist the public stigma of LGBT. Therefore, this paper will focus on the question of how the gay is represented in the @alpantuni account on Instagram, which performs the resistance against the stigma and discrimination. The paradigm of this research is interpretive with a hermeneutic approach and I use Roland Barthes’s semiotic analysis which divides two stages of interpretation. The stages are denotation and connotation with the myth which is attached to the research object. In the @alpantuni account on Instagram, 11 comic stripe posts could be analyzed. From the analysis, I found that the gays’ fear to express their thoughts and tend to be silent when their thoughts are considered to be erroneous. Those are caused by the inequity, discrimination and violence against the gays, and the majority promote democracy only for their own sake but are dogmatic to the thoughts of the gays. Thus, the story of the comic stripe containing the representation above is criticizing the current social conditions.
