Abstract

Indonesian language lessons in elementary schools are directed at improving students' ability to communicate using Indonesian both orally and in writing. Learning Indonesian has several aspects, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. Learning in elementary school can be divided into low class and high class learning. Learning in lower grades in the K13 curriculum uses thematic learning. Thematic learning is a form of integrated learning model that combines several subjects into one discussion theme which is a combination of knowledge and skills. The reading ability of elementary school children in lower classes is very important because it is part of language development for early childhood or lowerclass children. Therefore, reading skills must be taught to children from an early age. There are several factors inhibiting students' reading skills, namely students' lack of interest in reading book texts because the reading texts contain too much writing that is not accompanied by pictures, making students feel bored or bored in reading due to lack of motivation, students are busy or engrossed in themselves without paying attention. explanation from the teacher. Using descriptive qualitative research methods, and the data collection techniques used were observation and interviews, namely class III teachers at SDN Lialang. Learning media is very important for teachers to use in implementing learning, therefore learning media can be used by teachers so that students can understand what is conveyed by the teacher which encourages students' interest in paying attention to the learning delivered by the teacher. The learning media used to improve students' reading skills is big book media.
