Abstract

Breastfeeding is one of the first early childhood development interventions, in order to prepare children for a prosperous future. This research aimed to determine the relationship between breastfeeding patterns with infants aged 6-12 months development at Payung Sekaki Health Center area, Pekanbaru City. A cross sectional correlation research design was used for this study. Purposive sampling techniques were used to a total of 85 mothers with 6-12-month-old infant. Questionnaire and a sheet of the Denver Development Screening Test (DDST) are used as child developmental assessment. Univariate and bivariate analysis with chi-square test showed that 48.2% infants were partially breastfed and 63.5% had a normal development. The results of bivariate analysis showed that the majority of infants with normal development had an exclusive breastfeeding pattern (85.0%) and predominantly breastfed babies are up to 83.3% with p value (0.000) <α (0.05). It can be concluded that there is a connection between breastfeeding pattern and the development of infants aged 6-12 months. It is hoped that health workers can increase their active role by providing health education on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding as well as conducting monitoring activities on infant development.  Keywords: Breastfeeding Pattern, DDST, Infant Development

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months to meet the nutritional needs of infants have an important role to the nutritional status of infants. The purpose of the study was to find out the relationship between history of exclusive breastfeeding toward infant’s nutritional status for 6 to 12 months in Payung Sekaki Health Center working area. This study was descriptive correlation with cross sectional approach. The samples in this study were mothers and infants from 6 to 12 months with 94 respondents by using cluster sampling technique. The analyzes were univariate and bivariate using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. The results showed that the majority of respondents were 6-month-old as much as 23.4% with normal birth weight of 96.9%. Maternal age was early adult as much as 86,2% with high school education as much as 72,3%. 69.1% of mothers did not work. The history of exclusive breastfeeding as much as 54.3% and babys nutritional status is in normal nutrition as much as 85.1%. The results of the analysis showed that infants with a history of exclusive breastfeeding tend to have normal nutritional status of 92.2% more than malnutrition and overweight.   Based on the results of statistical tests it showed that there was no relationship between history of exclusive breastfeeding toward infant’s nutritional status for 6 to 12 months (p value = 0.868). The results of this study recommend health workers to provide health education about exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months.   Keywords: Exclusive breastfeeding, infant, nutritional status.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the relationship of family support with the duration of exclusive breastfeeding in Sidomulyo Public Health Center Pekanbaru. This research uses descriptive correlation design with the cross sectional approach. Respondents in the study were mothers who had infants aged 6-12 months as many as 97 people, that were taken using purposive sampling technique. The measuring tool used was questionnaire with 19 statements for family support variables and 2 statements for the duration of exclusive breastfeeding that has passed validity and reliable testing. Data analysis used was univariate & bivariate analysis using the chi-square test. The results showed that most respondents gave positive family support (50.5%) and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding <6 months (66.0%). Mothers with exclusive breastfeeding duration for 6 months were mothers with positive family support (55.1%). The relationship between family support and mother duration gave exclusive breastfeeding was significant, with p-value (0,000) <α (0,005) OR = 8,591. It is expected that health workers can enhance their active role by providing health education on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and family to always support the mother to do exclusive breastfeeding.Keywords: Duration, exclusive breastfeeding, family support.
