Abstract

Hate speech is among the most vicious problem faced by Muslims in the world. As Muslims are obliged to perform the principle of al amr bi al ma’ruf wa tanhawna anil munkar (commanding right and forbidding evil), what perceived as hate speech sometimes overlaps such basic tenet of Islamic principle of commanding right and forbidding wrong. The aim of this research is therefore twofold. First, it explore the contruction of hate speech among Da’is (Islamic preachers) in traditional Islamic boarding schools in East Kalimantan. And Seccondly, it explores ideal responses toward such practices as perceived by those Da’is. Findings suggest that the construction of hate speeches and ideal responses towerds it, among Da’is in Islamic traditional boarding schools known as pondok pesantrens, is founded mostly upon the principle of potential damage of those hate speech practices. Keywords: Hate speech, Islamic Da’wa, and Da’is in East Kalimantan.

Fourth: under any circumstances just be with God. In berMaiyah there are many grains of knowledge to be gained. Because of something that is considered good by someone not necessarily good for other people, then what happens in Maiyah not a pendoktrinan ideology, nor is it an authoritarian system, do not rely on one figure, but work together to find the truth of science, in other words, not looking for anyone true, but look for what is right. Abstract

The practice of da’wa in a democratic society is often used as a tool to influence public policy trhough political means. This is often the case because the practice of da’wa is relatively easy to be exploited by politicians. They often transform religious messages of da’wa into political ones without loosing their attractiveness before the audience. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to aswer two inter-related questions; (1) how political messages masked with religious symbols become effective and therefore are able to influence public policy and (2) how such messages become not effective and therefore are not able to influence public policy. To answer those questions, success story in the case of 212 movement in Jakarta and a failure story in the case of religious purification of Islam in Lombok are analyzed to find elements that play important roles regarding the success and failure of a da’wa movement to influence public policy. Keywords: Public policy, Public Communication, Diffusion of Political Messages, Islamic Da’wa

Abstract

Nowadays, dakwah is perceived merely as a process of communicating Islamic teachings. If we take a closer look into the life of the Prophet Muhammad, we can safely assume that dakwah is more than just a process of communicating Islamic teachings from some person to others. Prophet Muhammad dedicated most of his life preparing for da’wa even though the moral state of his people at that time, the Arabs of Mecca was in dire need of guidance. This paper talks about several pre-prophethood events as narrated by many Muslim historians. Through historical approach and inductive reasoning, such events are analysed to reveal their relation with dakwah of the prophet. Findings in this paper reveal that the life of the prophet Muhammad before he became prophet constituted vital role for the dakwah he undertook later on. Prophet’s dakwah also focused more on issues of hereafter and less on issues of halal and haram. Keywords: Arabs, Da’wa, Pre-prophethood

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reveal and understand the motives behind and implications of religious conversion among Torajan Muslim converts from migrant community in the City of Bontang, East Kalimantan Province. Applying qualitative-fenomenological method, this research finds out that the main motives behind religious conversion among Torajan Muslim converts is practical and pragmatic benefits such as to perform marriage. However, the combination of Hidayah (spiritual guidance) from Allah, support from other family members, and influence from social environment are also believed to be other significant reasen behind religious conversion among Torajan Muslim converts in Bontang. Despite facing a number of socio-economic problems, post-conversion politics, and inter-ethnic family disputes resulting from the practice of conversion, family relation among Torajan Christians who convert to Islam and those who remain Cristian are well maintained. In the broader context, religious conversion for practical and pragmatical reasons is not always lead to disruptions in terms of inter-religious relations among migrant community of Torajan people despite the fact that those converts are still marginalized in the area of political economy competition. Keywords: Conversion, muallaf, ethnic-religion, Toraja

Abstract

Abstract Da’wa is a process of increasing the quality of faith within human soul according to the Islamic sharia. This process is continuous, systematic and it should be carried out step by step. This process aims at activating the act of continuous improvement within oneself. Enhancing faith towards god is manifested in the form of enhancing knowledge, awareness, and good deeds. Therefore, it is a moral obligation for Muslims to keep the course of social change on track through introducing and implementating Islamic values in every aspect of life. Thus, it is not an exaggeration to say that achieving the goal of divine social change according to Islam can onle be carried out by da’wa activity.
