Abstract

This research focuses on analyzing speech and thought presentation in the story by means of stylistic approach proposed by Leech and Short (2007). There are two main objectives in this research: (1) to find out speech and thought presentation techniques used in the story and (2) to figure out how those techniques reveal the characterization of the story. Three types of speech presentation were found in the analysis: Free Direct Speech (FDS) in 56%, Direct Speech (DS) in 41%, and Indirect Speech (IS) in 3%. Indirect Thought (IT) is the only thought presentation found in the data, presented in 15 utterances. Those presentation techniques reveal that Lahiri lets the readers involved in the story. FDS shows that the absence of the narrator in the dialogues is influenced by clarity of the context. By employing IT in the whole thought presentation, Lahiri involves herself in the character’s consciousness. Keywords: speech, thought, presentation, stylistics

The study used a descriptive qualitative design. Descriptive qualitative is a method of research that makes the description of the situation or events or occurrences clearer. It provides the description of situation or events or occurrences, so this method is an intention to accumulate the basic data. The data were taken from sixteen translation of journal abstracts Edunomika STIE AAS Surakarta in Vol 2, No 01 (2018). The finding shows that there were five translation techniques used in journal abstracts, they are Transposition/Shift (126 data or 75,90%), Reduction/Omission (21 data or 12,65%), Amplification/Addition (8 or 4,82%), Established Equivalence (6 or 3,61%) and Borrowing (5 data or 3,01%). The most dominant type of translation technique is Transposition/Shift. This technique replaces the grammatical categories of the source language (SL) into the target language (TL). This technique is usually used because of a different grammar between SL and TL. Transposition is the process where parts of the speech change their sequence when they are translated.

The objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of Cognitive Strategy Instruction in Writing (CSIW) strategy to improve the students’ writing skill. A pre-experimental design was employed with one class of the tenth grade students at SMAN 6 Pinrang as sample. Cluster random sampling was applied to select the sample of one group pre-test and post-test design. The number of sample selected was 35 students. The data were obtained through writing test as were analyzed using statistical formula. The findings showed that the students’ mean score in the pre-test was 4.12 and it was improved to be 6.61 in the post-test. Therefore, the statistical computation described that Cognitive Strategy Instruction in Writing (CSIW) strategy was effective to improve the students’ writing skill in recount text. It was supported by the value of t-test that was bigger than the value of t-table (13.10> 2.032). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected.
