Abstract

Scientific writing like abstract demands perfect grammar writing in academic language. A common error usually is the use of an automated translator such as Google Translate to translate abstracts from Indonesian to English. The translation produced needs to be polished again to avoid mistakes in the grammar itself. The objective of this research is to find the type of grammatical error in English abstracts published in Jurnal Ilmiah Ekonomi Islam (JIEI) journal in 2020 both English and Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that three types of grammatical errors found in English abstracts in the JIEI journal are misinformation, omission, and addition. In misinformation error, there are 98 data or 44.5 %. In omission error, there are 69 data or 31.36 %. In addition to error, there are 53 data or 24.09 %. In misinformation, several errors were found in the use of part of speech such as article/determiner, the preposition, verb (subject-verb agreement), noun (singular-plural), and pronoun. In omission, several errors were found in the omission of part of speech such as article ‘a, an, the’, preposition ‘on’ and ‘to’. In addition, several errors were found in the addition part of speech such as article/determiner ‘a, an, the”, preposition “of, to, in, on, at”. Preposition sometimes is not used with certain verbs and expressions. The most dominant type of grammatical error is misinformation. There is the misuse of grammar forms into other grammatical forms in the use of part of speech such as in the determiner/article, preposition, verb, noun, and pronoun.

Abstract

Abstract: Virtual classes have now become commonplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. As time goes by, applications for virtual meetings continue to appear, one of which is Gather Town, which is now widely used and is a tight competitor to Zoom Meeting and Google Meet. Gather Town is a virtual meeting platform designed like a video game. This research is to implement the use of the 'Gather Town' game platform and to find out the student’s perception during the implementation and simulation of Gather Town application as an alternative platform in creating a sensation of English Language Learning (ELL) in the real classroom through virtual class during the pandemic COVID-19. This study uses descriptive qualitative research. The result analysis from observation and interview show that Gather Town has graphics similar to the Harvest Moon game, where students can play one character and can write their name on the top so that the lecturer can see which students are present. The room is designed similar to a classroom, where the lecturer's desk is at the front of the classroom. The virtual classroom also has chairs that are neatly lined up like classrooms in the real world. Then when doing group assignments, the student characters will gather at the same table as in a real classroom. They also carry out group work activities as if they were in the classroom. Each group sat in a circle and discussed with one another. The current game may be an alternative design in a virtual classroom. Abstract

Symbols as one of the primary media in the communication process which are directly capable of translating the thoughts and feelings of the communicator to the readers or audiences. In the Parasite movie, many symbols are hidden. This study investigates the representation of symbols in the Parasite movie. The method of this study was qualitative with a semiotic approach. The result analysis shows that several symbols found in the movie: Morse code, rain, underground (semi-basement), stone, smell, bunker (basement), and food can be seen in the “Parasite movie”. A Morse code symbol is a message. The code HELP being misinterpreted as HOLP cause the message not to be transmitted well. Rain as a symbol represents both the wealthy and the poor. Rain is a blessing to the wealthy but it is a curse to the poor, as it brings disasters (flooding). Underground is related to Kim's family home, who live in a cramped semi-basement space in a crowded complex. The stone's symbolism is linked to good fortune and prosperity. The viewing block (scholar stone) is spiritually idiosyncratic of good fortune and stable life. It symbolizes a sense of social status by smiles or implies a distinction between Kim's and Park's families about rich and poor people. Bunker (basement) is related to the hidden secret which is connected to the Park family's estate, only the former homeowner and housemaid know it. The final symbol is Ramdon, a food. It's a mixture of ramen and udon. This food has a symbiotic relationship due to the mixture of noodles and meat. As an act of showcasing the Park family's love of a "high-class" dish, an expensive steak was added on the cheap of an instant noodle.
