Abstract

Shorea javanica was a high dependent plant to ectomycorrhizal symbiosis, dealing with its growth. In Lampung Province, S.javanica standing stock have been hundreds of years, known as repong damar.  It's threatened by some deforestation, such as forest fire.  This study aimed to analyze the impact of heating on the ability of ectomycorrhizal colonization and analyze the effect of ectomycorrhizal inoculation on the growth of S. javanica.  The experiment arranged by randomized complete design with 5 treatments, which were without inoculum, unheated inoculum, soil inoculums heat to 40oC, 70oC and 100°C for 24 hours. Soil inoculums are taken under S. javanica standing, at Krui, Pesisir Barat District, Lampung Province. The result analyzed by ANOVA and continued with LSD test.  The experiment was conducted for four months.  The results show that colonization ectomycorrhiza still existed up to 100oC and ectomycorrhiza could enhance growth variables, including height, leaves number, leaf area, root length and root dry weight. The best colonization and growth were on 100oC heating. The heat treatments seem killed some fungus.  Only a few fungi could resist and colonize S. javanica roots.  Without any competitors, the resist ectomycorrhizal could develop broadly.

Abstract

This article aimed to explain the role of scavengers as a sustainable landfill management strategy. Strategies using high technology or technical innovation faced many obstacles because of the limited cost and mastery of technology in the landfill. The consequences of the ancient paradigm and undeveloped model of waste management directed to an unsustainable situation and keep growing the opening of the landfill as a disposal site. Therefore we need an effective effort to reduce the waste that goes to landfill so it will not only be a place for waste bury but also being waste treatment facility in order to transform waste to be a valuable resource. Landfill and scavengers are things that can not be separated. When people reject the presence of landfill, a scavenger is highly dependent on the presence of waste that goes to landfill. Scavengers as one of the potential waste management strategies need to be considered. Scavengers and garbage are two things that have a close connection. Garbage always produced daily by humans and scavengers pick up the waste that can be sold. Some research related scavengers role in reducing waste will be presented. From the results of literature review and the results of the research, it can be concluded that regard scavengers as a community are important for the environment and developing landfill management strategy.

Abstract

Mangrove is a unique ecosystem and has an important function ecologically, socio-economically, and education. The area of mangroves in Purworejo Regency is decreasing due to logging, settlement, ponds, and agriculture. Reduced mangrove stands will affect the existence of various fauna associated with it. Therefore it is done in August-September 2016 to know the diversity of the fiddler crabs in the mangrove area Purworejo District, Central Java. There are three stations, namely dense mangroves (Gedangan Village), medium mangroves (Jatikontal Village), and rare mangroves (Ngentak Village). From the research, there were 7 types of fiddler crab, Uca annulipes, U. crassipes, U. paradussumieri, U. rosea, U. tetragonon, U. vocans, and U. vomeris. The index of fiddler crab diversity in the mangrove area of Purworejo Regency, Central Java at station 1 (1.67) and station 2 (1.90) is moderate. The fiddler crab biodiversity index at station 3 (0.64) is low. Environmental conditions throughout the station are relatively good for mangrove life and fiddler crabs, ie temperature 26-30oC, pH 6-8, dissolved oxygen 3,5-6,6 mg / L, salinity 3-9 ppt, and sandy mud substrate. Vegetations of mangrove at station I are Rhizophora mucronata, Nypa fruticans, Sonneratia alba, and Hibiscus tiliaceus. Mangrove vegetation at station II is Sonneratia caseolaris, Rhizophora stylosa, N. fruticans, H. tiliaceus, and Morinda citrifolia. Vegetations of mangrove at station III are S. alba, S. caseolaris, N. fruticans, and R. mucronata. The density of mangrove vegetation is related to species abundance (density) of fiddler crabs.

Abstract

Inner Ambon Bay water (TAD) is the last accumulation area from several rivers downstream, the input materials and compounds from the land and rivers have a contribution in the water quality condition changes so that it is very important to recheck the water quality condition sustainably. The purpose of this study is to determine the water quality characteristics based on physical and chemical parameters for the basic of the existing data during transitional season I. The temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen is measured by in situ, and employed TOA DKK water quality checker, therefore the total suspended solid (TSS), turbidity and fat oil is analyzed by laboratory. The result of this study shows that generally water quality in the TAD is still proportional to the standard quality of aquaculture and marine life, nevertheless, some parameters such as TSS and turbidity is not proportional to the standard quality for seagrass and corals due to the enhance of sedimentation inside TAD.
