Abstract

Abstract:The objective of the research was to investigate the needs of students’ analysis in using web-based English learning materials at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The research  focused  on  the  students’  professional  needs,  their difficulties of English learning materials while studying, their language skills and tasks, preferred learning styles and teaching methods, and the suggestions for better English learning strategies. This research was used a descriptive analytical approach in order to find the research goals. The data collection used was questionnaire. The research had comprised samples of 50 students randomly from many programs at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The participants were both males and females. The research findings revealed that students need to learn English primarily by using web-based English learning materials. Their difficulties in studying could be solved.  Furthermore, the research results indicated that the students were at the beginner level. They wanted to have various learning topics in learning English using website such as the topics related to daily life, science and technology and about teenagers’ life. In learning activities for four skills the students preferred to practice the dialogue in pairs for speaking skill, complete jumble sentences for writing skill, identify key word of the monolog or dialogue for listening, listen to music for vocabulary learning activities and identify grammar error in sentences and write sentences or paragraphs based on the grammar that ever learnt for grammar learning activities.  Keywords: needs analysis, web-based English learning materials, learning                    activities.

Abstract

Abstract: Mastering English vocabulary is essential in this competitive world. By mastering English vocabulary, students can learn English and comunicate with people. However, there are still many of the students cannot learn English Vocabulary well. They still face difficulties for example, in learning simple daily words. This situation, make students feel bored and lose their interest in learning English. Therefore, the use of learning media are needed to attract these learners attention and interest to learn English in more effective and interesting way. Besides, media can be used to learn English anywhere and anytime outside the school. Related to this research, the main purpose of this project is to make Smart Towels which can be used as an alternative self-learning medium in learning English Vocabulary. This project resulted Smart Towels consists of various themes suitable for Elementary School Students. These towels are modified from ordinary towels that is modified to make it look more interesting. These media can be used in and outside classes during learning-teaching process or spare time. By using this media, the students can be atttracted to learn and increase their ability in English vocabulary interestingly and effectively Keywords: Smart Towels ,learning, Vocabulary.

Abstract

Abstract The purpose of this research was to investigate how the English teachers of Junior High School 4 Banjit, Way Kanan apply language assessment in teaching learning process. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The respondent is one of English teachers of that school. For collecting the data, the researcher employed observationand interview. The finding showed that the participant tend to less care toward assessment. It is caused by less of knowledge about the assessment itself. The participant was reluctant did the assessment because he felt that it is difficult to be conducted and complex matter. In conclusion the participant did not assess optimally and the assessments applied by the teacher were less able to present the result of students’ learning.  Key Words:  language, assessment, students’learning.

Abstract

Abstract: English is widely used over the world. In English, there are some aspects that must be mastered as well namely grammar, pronounciation, and vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of aspects that must be mastered, because before we are able to speak, write, and listen, the vocabulary is the first thing we have to master before grammar. However, in learning vocabulary, the students still face difficulties. For example, they always have problems in knowing, memorizing, and understanding the new words. Therefore, the media that used in learning will surely help the students understand the lesson well. Besides, they can also learn English in a more effective and interesting way. The main purpose of this  is making a Magic Dice game which can be used as an alternative in learning vocabulary, for students in elementary school level. This project produced a set of Magic Dice game consisting of six sets of question cards related to part of body, vegetables, fruits, nouns, adjectives, colors, animals and profession, a set of shocking cards, and a big dice. This game can be used in classes during the learning-teaching process. It can helps the students in knowing and understanding the new words of vocabulary. Abstract

Abstract: Malay story “Yong Dollah” is one of cultural heritage in the form of oral literature in Bengkalis. This story has been very popular and often been told to children, teenagers or even adults in certain occasion like at night or free time. It has been told throughout generations in the life of Malay people in Bengkalis. Yong Dollah is a character created by a man named Abdullah bin Endong, Bengkalis Malay artist. In his entire life, he liked to tell stories that mostly came from his imagination to entertain people. The contents of his stories were often related to his daily life, adventure and often contained certain moral value for audience. The popularity of the stories could be used as learning resource text and media to teach English for senior high school students. However, English version of these stories had never been made before. The exploration and translation of the original stories into English were done to meet the need of learning. Method of translating used in this study was adaptation where intercultural differences between original text from source language (Bahasa Melayu) and target language (English) were adjusted to convey the original meaning from the content of the language. Results of the translation were set of translated stories of Yong Dollah. These Stories can be used by teacher in teaching English for senior high school students. Abstract

Abstract: The objective of the research was to describe the learning atmosphere during the implementation of “Talking Chips” (TC) technique in Speaking skill. Besides, the research was also designed to know how the improvement of the students’ Speaking skill during the implementation of “Talking Chips” (TC) technique. This research was a classroom action research. The research was carried out in second semester students of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The lecturer was the researcher assisted by collaborator as observer. The interview and questionnnaire were given to the students before and after the implementation of Talking Chips (TC). The tests were in the form of pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2. The data were analized qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analized using Interactive Model of Data Analysis as propounded by Matthew M. Miles and A.M. Huberman. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more confident, fun and enjoyable. Furthermore, Talking Chips (TC) Technique was able to improve the students’ Speaking Skill. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 40.84 in pre-test to 45.92 in cycle 1, and 49.61 in cycle 2, although the results of the research were just a little bit improvement. It could be concluded that the use of Talking Chips has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of Speaking Skill on Second Semester of English Study Program at STAIN Bengkalis.  Keyword: Speaking Skill, Talking Chips (TC) Technique

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to discuss one way of solving the problems of students in writing narrative texts, namely by using Story Circle. In this activity, students were divided into several groups and then the teacher read one of the narrative texts in the form of fairy tales, fables or legends that they have never known before. They rewrote the text they had heard before in accordance with the generic structure and language features found in the narrative text, but with different versions according to their imagination. After they wrote the first few sentences of the story on the paper they had each, the students gave the paper to a colleague on their left. Then, their colleagues added the next sentence based on the idea of the story that had been written before. This activity continued until they completed the complication section of the story. When the paper returned to the real owner, the student wrote down the resolution. Activities Story Circle is expected to be one of the variations of learning to write in the class so that students are able to pour their ideas properly and precisely, especially in English. Abstract

Abstract: Meranti Islands Regency is one of the biggest sago producers in Indonesia. In addition, it  also has much potency in tourism sector. However, the potency it has is not been explored well. The main purpose of this study was to make a profile book about tourism objects in Meranti Islands Regency as a media of promotion to promote tourism objects in Meranti Islands Regency. This profile book discusses about water war festival, shell seeking with a plank, Beting Beras beach, the Darul Ulum grand mosque, Sejahtera Bakti Buddhist monastery,  Kue Bulan festival, “Imlek” Chinese new year celebration, and Bokor cultural tourism village. Abstract

Abstract: Bengkalis is one of the districts in Riau Province, Indonesia. One of heritage from Bengkalis  culture named Zapin dance. Zapin dance was originally brought from Yaman by merchants in early 16th century and this dance also educative entertainment. The advanced of technology develop this Zapin dance in the form  of video as media. The available videos on website only show the movement of the dance and this video show the history of the dance in Bahasa Indonesia. Therefore, the writer is interested in making of profile video of Zapin dance in English. Zapin dance was made as attractive as possible different from other videos and when people watch this video, they will be not bored. Besides that, this video not only can be used in Indonesia but abroad especially for foreigner who learns Zapin. This video equipped with profile pictures Zapin dance and types of Zapin Dance. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to find out students’ writing motivation in hortatory exposition by using\ POW plus TREE strategy. The research was carried out at the eleventh grade students at SMAN 1 Bukit Batu This research was quantitative research. The population in this study was 26 students who were taken randomly.  A set of questionnaire was distributed to 26 students regarding their motivation on writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. In this research, measurement of these statements using 30 statements in questionnaire based on indicators to assess students’ motivation in writing hortatory exposition. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 22 to know the normality, validity, and reliability of the instrument. The researcher measured the total score from the result of the students’ motivation in writing ability test. The results of this study showed that students had goodmotivation in writing hortatory exposition by using POW plus TREE strategy. Keywords: Motivation, writing, hortatory exposition, POW plus TREE.
