Abstract

Abstract: The aims of this study was to describe the learning atmosphere when the implementation of Web-based learning materials and to find out how the improvement of the students’ basic skill during the implementation of Web-based learning materials. This was classroom action research type of research. The participants of this research were the Business Administration students of State Polytechnic Bengkalis. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of action research, i.e. planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. The data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative data were analyzed using Interactive Model of Data Analysis as propounded by Matthew M. Miles and A.M. Huberman. The results of the research showed that the learning atmosphere also improved. The class became more active, confident, and enjoyable. Furthermore, a Web-based learning material was able to improve the students’ Basic English Skill. It was proven by the increase of the students’ mean score from 41.22 in pre-test to 46.74 in cycle 1, and 49.92 in cycle 2. This result shows that the use of Web-based learning materials has proven to be an effective way in teaching-learning of Basic English skill.

Abstract

A teacher has resposibilities in building the students’ character, morality and intellectual capability. What he does for the students will give great effect for the future of a nation. A teacher needs to do self-continuous improvementin teaching because he is the one who is responsible to transfer knowledge and value. In performing his teaching task, he needs to understand his students’ personality to ease him find out the precise methods, strategies, approaches and models of teaching applied during teaching and learning process takes time. Understanding the students’ personality in learning will lead the teacher to be successful in teaching because he knows what to do with different students who have different ability. It is a must for a teacher to make someone who knows nothing become the one who knows many things and know how to solve any problem.The teacher will also do his best to apply various methods of teaching in order that he can attract the students’ attention to learn more about the subject. Knowing the students personality, such as their energy, brain hemisphere, modality, and multiple intelligences will really be helpful for the success of teaching.

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to improve the students’ ability in constructing If conditional sentences by aplying the tense key matching technique. This was a kind of Classroom Action Research. The subject of the study was the second semester students of the English Department of STKIP Insan Madani Airmolek in academic year 2019/2020. The total number of the students were 10. The objectives of the study was to improve the second semester students’ ability in constructing If conditional  sentences by applying the Tense Key Matching Technique at English Department of STKIP Insan Madani Airmolek. The study was devided into two cycles in which each cycle has four phases (planning, acting, observing and reflecting. Both quantitative and qualitative data were gathered in this study. Through the result of the study, it shows that there is significant improvement on the students’ ability in constructing If conditional sentences. The mean score of the pre-test in cycle I was 60.7 and the post-test in the same cycle was 74.7. Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at finding out differences between students who were taught with and without Herringbone technique and the effectiveness of applying the technique to enhance students’ ability in comprehending narrative text Herringbone technique (Deegan, 2006) is a technique that helps students grow their comprehension of the main idea by scheming who, what, when, where, why, and how question on a visual diagram of a fish skeleton. The methodology used in this research was quantitative approach by experimental method. The subjects of this study were 26 students in experimental class and 26 students in control class of MTSN Takengon II, Aceh Tengah, Aceh. In collecting data, the researchers used tests and questionnaire. The data were analyzed by non-parametric statistic, Mc. Nemar test and Chi-square for two independent samples. Result of the data reveals result of Mc. Nemar test by which the Chi-Square observedin experimental classwas higher than Chi Square table and Chi Square obtained in control class (21,05 > 3,814 < 12) and using  Chi-square for two independent samples showed that  the perceived scorewas higher than score of Chi-Square table (4,857>3,814). Moreover, based on the data from questionnaire, the students stated that Herringbone technique was fun to help them understand the materials and the time used was more useful. Hence, the result of Mc. Nemar revealed that there was significant differences between the students taught with and without Herringbone technique and Chi Square for two independent samples proved that Herringbone technique was effective to enhance students’ ability in comprehending narrative test.  Keywords: Effectiveness, Herringbone Technique, Comprehension, Narrative                 Text.

Abstract

Abstract: The aims of the research were: (1) To know that Think-Talk-Write Strategy can improve the students’ writing skill and (2) To describe the process of  Think-Talk-Write-Strategy in improving students’ writing skill. This research was conducted at Madiun State Polytechnic at the Second Semester of English Department in the Academic Year of 2016/2017. There were 30 students which consisted of 5 males and 25 females. The qualitative and quantitative data were used in this research. The qauntitative data were taken from the scores of the pre-test and post-test of all cycles. The qualitative data were used to compare the result before and after the reseach. They were taken through the observation, interview, and questionnaire. Based on the discussion and conclusion, think-talk-write strategy is recommended to improve the writing skill. It is suitable for the Second Semester of English Department students at Madiun State Polytechnic.

Abstract

Communication skill in English is regarded important nowadays. People need to have good English communication skill to express their feelings better. Some Indonesian students find it quite difficult to communicate well in English. One of the aspects that needs to master well is vocabulary aspect. Vocabulary does not consist of vocabulary only, but it also includes parts of speech, such as verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. Preposition as one of the parts of speech plays significant role in communication, but some Indonesian students face some difficulties in applying it. The subject consisted of 22 students of Information Technology study program. This study is a case study in nature by using combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches in analysis. In analyzing the data, some steps were used. First, the writer analyzed the correct answers of the students and categorized them into the suitable profile. And the last, the writer analyzed the problems faced by the students of using prepositions. The result of the study showed that most of the Information Technology students (63,64%) achieved satisfactory grade in using prepositions. The average percentage of the students’ correct answer was 75,64% in which it showed that the students were on the average achievement in using prepositions. It could also be concluded that some students still found difficulties in applying the correct prepositions because they did not clearly understand the difference among the prepositions. More practice is regarded necessary to make the students’ mastery to use prepositions better.

Abstract

Based on the problem found in the classroom, mastering English vocabulary is one of the weekness for the student. It seemed difficult for them to understand some words which are unfamiliar with them or even memorizing them. The use of learning media can be more effective and interesting way in learning.Therefore the researcher decided to solve these problems by applying a matching game which can be used as an alternative learning medium in learning Vocabulary. The participanst of this research were 20 Students of English Depatment. Tihis game was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings; three meetings for teaching the vocabulary by using this media, and one of them was for the test. The research findings showed that matching game could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. It could be seen from the improvement of the students score in test. The average score of students in cycle 1 was 63 and in cycle 2 was 66. In conclusion, the implementation of matching game could improve the students’ Vocabulary mastery at first year Students of English Department at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis.

Abstract

Abstract: The ability of summarizing is essential to be acquired by students. In writing, students often summarize when quoting opinions and writing papers. This descriptive research is aimed at finding students’ level of ability in summarizing an English text as well as the highest and the lowest aspects of writing. Population of the research was second year students of Business English Study Program Bengkalis State Polytechnic consisting of 48 students. Technique of sampling used was random sampling technique. The chosen samples were 24 students of the population. Data and information were gathered by a writing test. The students were asked to write a good summary of a text given. The findings revealed that the ability level of students in summarizing text was in fairly good. While the second highest was in good category. This finding was based on the highest percentage of students’ score in summarizing of a text. In addition, the findings also explain that the highest aspect of writing was on fluency while the lowest percentage was on organization. It can be concluded that the students have good ability in summarizing English text.  Keywords  : Students’ Ability, Summarizing, Text

Abstract

Abstract:The objective of the research was to investigate the needs of students’ analysis in using web-based English learning materials at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The research  focused  on  the  students’  professional  needs,  their difficulties of English learning materials while studying, their language skills and tasks, preferred learning styles and teaching methods, and the suggestions for better English learning strategies. This research was used a descriptive analytical approach in order to find the research goals. The data collection used was questionnaire. The research had comprised samples of 50 students randomly from many programs at State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. The participants were both males and females. The research findings revealed that students need to learn English primarily by using web-based English learning materials. Their difficulties in studying could be solved.  Furthermore, the research results indicated that the students were at the beginner level. They wanted to have various learning topics in learning English using website such as the topics related to daily life, science and technology and about teenagers’ life. In learning activities for four skills the students preferred to practice the dialogue in pairs for speaking skill, complete jumble sentences for writing skill, identify key word of the monolog or dialogue for listening, listen to music for vocabulary learning activities and identify grammar error in sentences and write sentences or paragraphs based on the grammar that ever learnt for grammar learning activities.  Keywords: needs analysis, web-based English learning materials, learning                    activities.

Abstract

One of the main jobs of an English teacher teaching speaking skill is to develop and administer a speaking test in order to measure how much or little the students have achieved the instructional objectives and materials upon completion of a language program. Through the test results, the teacher is enabled to make decisions such as deciding the effectiveness of the language program and passing or advancing the students to the next level of the program.To qualify herself in developing a valid and realiable speaking test, both conceptual and practical knowledges are needed. The article presents the needed knowledge about speaking test covering the concepts of  speaking skill construct, criterion-referenced test, analytic approach, criteria setup, and scoring and grading. The article also reports the implementation of the teaher-made speaking test to testing the speaking skills achievement of the students in Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Malang.
