Abstract

The area size of sugarcane planting nationally shows a decrease. This is also marked by a decrease in the interest of farmers planting sugarcane and low loyalty to the sugar factory. In 2014, the government established a sugarcane management regrouping program. The regrouping program provides benefits for the efficiency of sugarcane planting, more effective in cutting and transport processes, forging farmer group and sugar factory, and increasing farmers' loyalty to the sugar factory.  The weakness of the regrouping program is that it emphasizes technical aspects only. The criterion of the social aspect is essential because this always saves problems related to communication networks and establishing cooperation. Through the clique strategy, this can conduct a communication network analysis in regrouping. Regrouping programs can build social interaction and communication networks. The form and level of communication network structure in the regrouping program can place actors or farmers build communication networks and cooperate in sugarcane farming. Understanding the role of cooperation networks between farmers or groups determines the success of regrouping sugarcane.JEL Classification:  P32, O35, Q18

Abstract

The research aims to find the best marketing communication strategy for reopening the new business venture that engages in washing services in specialized products such as bags and shoes. This research used a descriptive approach. The research was conducted through FGD and market surveys. The observed variable was the perception of cleaning service in terms of the interests, activities, behavior, needs and desires of consumers. The result of the research shows that the approach of restarting the business is looking at a business venture as a startup. The business branding of the new venture is in a disadvantaged position compared to its competitors because it has just opened; therefore marketing strategy is to build and enhance business branding by communicating information about business services to potential customers through social media, key persons, and word of mouth. It is expected to be able to communicate the service features and a variety of information about service, price and discount, location, and other profiles of new ventures. The marketing communication strategy is based on the stages of a customer's journey to decide on a purchase, ranging from awareness, education, consideration, purchase, loyalty, to advocacy.   JEL Classification:  L21, L84, M30

Abstract

Children are seriously affected by poverty and suffer particular deprivations. In addition, their situation is most of the time ignored in the strategies devoted to tackling poverty. This study examined the multidimensional poverty of children under five in Benin by identifying its determinants. It used the data from the demographic and health surveys in Benin from 2011-2012 and adopted the approach by Alkire & Foster (2011) to generate multidimensional poverty profiles of children. The weightings of the dimensions were generated by multiple correspondence analysis. The GLM and Logit models were used to identify the driving factors of child deprivation. Findings indicate that 54 percent of children were multidimensionally poor when the poverty line k = 1 against 32 percent of poor children when k = 3.  Nutrition and sanitation dimensions had the highest relative contributions of 41.12 and 28.77 percent respectively to the global multidimensional poverty index. JEL Classification:  D63, I32, O10

Abstract

In developing countries, widely reported incidents of dangerous levels of pesticides in food have stimulated the demand for organic food, a movement to choose organic agriculture. It also makes more people have desires to consume chemical free foods. This study, therefore, assessed the consumers’ awareness of their eight basic rights and willingness to pay for organic vegetables in Ethiopia. The data were collected from 200 respondents (consumers) from Addis Ababa and 80 smallholder vegetable farmers at Ziway and Meki through a combination of random and purposive sampling procedures using a structured interview and were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results show that vegetable producers used a lot of chemicals, but not in a safe way or at the optimum level. The findings also show that the overall degree of consumers’ awareness on the eight consumer rights is low.  Furthermore, willingness to pay premium prices about 5-50% to obtain organic products, which can be viewed as the cost of investment in human health, is encouraging. There is a need to target agricultural policies relating to handling practices and for public health policies to be more differentiated in promoting food safety. Informing consumers about unique characteristics of organic production methods, the strict inspection and required third party certification might be a promising strategy to develop the market for organic vegetables in Ethiopian urban centers. JEL Classification: D18, Q10, Q18

Abstract

The study of entrepreneurship and the adoption of innovations in farming so far shows a one-sided approach using a single equation model. It is not able to explore more in-depth information to improve farm management. This study aims to study (i) the performance of farming, (ii) the role of entrepreneurship and the adoption of innovative tractor use, and (iii) find the relationship between entrepreneurship, adoption of innovation, and the application of cultivation technology to the performance of lowland rice farming. The study was conducted in the village of Mattiro Ade, Patampanua sub-district, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi province. The survey was done on 50 lowland rice farmers who applied the tractor and combine harvester technology. The study uses a descriptive approach and the method of path analysis (partly least square). The results showed that the technology of tractor and combine harvester could improve farming performance, with an average yield of 6.62 tons of rice per hectare, a profit of 21.9 million rupiahs per hectare, with an R/C ratio of 3.21. Farmers exhibit perceptions of entrepreneurship and technology adoption at moderate levels. Farmers show limitations in access to information, loans or venture capital, and training in the use of tractors. The adoption of innovations by farmers deals with obstacles in terms of tractor operations, tractor prices, and the weak role of farmer groups. Entrepreneurship and technology adoption have a significant role in increasing the performance of lowland rice farming, where technology plays a role as an intervening variable. This research has important implications, namely the provision of extension workers and the empowerment of farmer groups to facilitate technology adoption and increase entrepreneurial entrepreneurship in farm management.JEL Classification: L26, O35, Q12

Abstract

Limestone mining in Tuban District has serious problems due to unlicensed mining that does not comply with conservation rules and mining procedures standards. This review article aims to study the socioeconomic and environmental aspects of limestone mining in Tuban Regency. Limestone mining by the village community substantially meets the eligibility criteria. Most of them work as unlicensed or illegal miners, mining kumbung limestone as material for building bricks. They generally work for landowners or investors who have limestone management rights. Livelihoods as miners provide better welfare guarantees compared to working on agricultural land. Limestone mining activities have impacted the destruction of the natural landscape, leaving lakes, caves, or giant holes in the ex-mining limestone hills. Efforts to resolve the issue include licensing arrangements, partnerships to improve the status of illegal miners, reclamation work to control erosion, and the development of the limestone tourism business. JEL Classification: J21, L72, Q15

Abstract

Urban farming is one of the alternatives to eliminate the impacts of the conversion of agricultural land. However, implementing urban farming activities requires various preparations, including the role of agricultural extension workers. The extension worker can make significant contributions to raise public awareness of the importance of urban farming. This study determines the performance level of extension workers in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of urban farming extension programs in BPP Kramas, Banyumanik district. This research employed a descriptive analysis approach by using a Likert scale. The results indicate that the performance level of extension workers in extension preparation, extension implementation, evaluation, and reporting are in the high category, with an average percentage achievement of 96%. It means that the urban farming program in Kramas Banyumanik district had been done well according to the formulated plan.JEL Classification: O18, Q15, Q16

Abstract

Nurses have a vital position in providing health services in the community in district areas. Their work situation needs to be considered in order to provide optimal service. This study aims to analyze the effect of workload and work environment on nurse performance and study work stress as a mediating variable on nurse performance.  This research was carried out by using the survey approach to nurses working in Puskesmas in Tumpang district working area. Path analysis was applied to obtain the relationship between the variables studied. The results show that if high works are handled by a small number of human resources, it will only result in high workloads and then increase work stress. A conducive work environment not only helps nurses to control stress but also allows them to improve their performance.JEL Classification: I18, J24, M54
