Abstract

Agricultural training has an important position in agriculture development, food security and poverty alleviation in Cameroon. The objectives of this study are to examine the impact of agricultural training on food crop production; determine the factors influencing agricultural training, decompose the effect of agricultural training type on food crop production, and recommend relevant economic policies on the basis of our analysis. Using data from the 2007 MINADER and data from the 2007 Household Consumption Survey, we used the control function model to estimate our result from STATA 13.0. We observed that the 2SLS, Control Function without interaction and Control Function with interaction results revealed that household agricultural training strongly correlates with food crop production. Also professional, workshop and on the farm training strongly affects agricultural production, with probability points of 2.6, 0.3 and 2.8 percent of increasing agricultural production respectively. Farm training becomes a high priority for increasing agricultural production.   There are considerable opportunities to take advantage of agricultural training in terms of increase in cereal productivity. The decision makers, civil society organizations and stakeholders operating in agriculture should multiply agricultural training in both former and informer training, through the creation of agricultural schools, workshop/seminars and on the field training.  JEL Classification: I25, D13, Q12

Abstract

This study aims to identify the local wisdom in the management system of shifting cultivation in Dayak Ngaju, Central Kalimantan. The study was conducted at Mantangai Tengah Village and Mantangai Hilir Village, Mantangai District, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan. Purposive sampling was used as the method to determine the location and sample of the research (70 people). The primary data used were farmers or cultivators and key informants while the secondary data were obtained from BPS and related agencies. The analysis of the data was done by using a descriptive qualitative technique. The results show that the management system of shifting cultivation conducted by local people cannot be separated from the local wisdom in the community. This is indicated by some activities which explain that phenomena such as forest clearing, land burning, land management, technology utilization, and ceremony accompanying the activities of shifting cultivation. Communities live in a harmonious relationship with forests and land, manage land in a limited area (1-2 ha) without the risk of land fires, live in communal and mutual cooperation (gotong-royong), and have local knowledge that has a positive value.JEL Classification: D19, O33, O35

Abstract

Farm partnership model between farmers and industries is expected to give advantages in many aspects such as economic, technical, and social. The research aims to analyze the farm partnership model between vegetable farmers and PT. Bumi Sari Lestari company. Primary data were collected using an interview. Secondary data were gotten by documentation. The data were analyzed by the analytical technique. The result shows that the type of partnership between farmers and the company is Inti-Plasma model based on Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) containing the clause if farmers were not able to provide sufficient vegetable, the company would buy directly from the market. The vegetables bought by the industry would be cultivated by the farmer and controlled by industry. There are many issues that have to be solved by the farmers and the company. First, farmers will choose a traditional ceremony instead of harvesting the plants. Hence, the vegetables will get rotten. Farmers will prefer to sell their vegetables to the market instead of bringing it to the company when the price gets high in the normal market. Vegetables will get rotten easily during the transportation process to the company. The last is the company needs to make an agreement with the farmers to decide optimal production based on the farm size in order to avoid over production.  JEL Classification: D19, J54, Q12

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the investment feasibility of developing staple food businesses in the rural area of Bojonegoro regency, to review the financial aspects and to calculate the investment feasibility.  This research used four types of analysis namely trend analysis, aspects of the investment, the investment feasibility and sensitivity. The results of the research show that there was an increase in the economic growth of 26.50 percent per year during 2016-2019, IRR  37.2 percent, positive NPV, the payback period was fewer than 5 years. The sensitivity analysis shows that the possibilities of an increase in operational costs of 2 percent produced NPV 34.7 million rupiahs and the IRR  36.97 percent, an increase such costs of 4 percent produced NPV 33.9 million rupiahs and the IRR 36.62 percent.  Meanwhile, the possibilities of a decrease in income of 2 and 4 percent find NPV 32.4 million rupiahs and the IRR 35.99 percent; and NPV value was 29,3 million rupiahs and the IRR 34.59 percent respectively.  The results indicate that the staple food business in Bojonegoro regency was considered feasible.  Furthermore, this research has implications for regional food chain development in terms of the stability of domestic food production, stabilization of food prices, regulation of space infrastructure improvements and business climate of investment. JEL Classification: D19, J54, Q12

Abstract

Indonesia is a country having abundant natural resources, including nutritious plants as a source of food and medicine. Along with the increasing public awareness of the importance of healthy living, there is a great shift in the demand of food. At present, people do not only want foods that have good nutritional composition as well as attractive appearance and taste, but also the ones that have certain physiological functions for the body. The foods that have such functions are known as functional foods. One ingredient that has the potential to be developed into functional food is mocaf flour. It is made from cassava which is made from the fermentation principle by modifying the cassava cells. This study aims to reveal the conditions for the development of the functional food industry made from mocaf flour in Indonesia using the value chain approach. This study was a qualitative research by using multiple case studies along the value chain. The data were collected from review of secondary data, in-depth interviews, and observations in each case study. The case study locus was the center of the mocaf-based food industry in West Java. The results showed that (i) the mocaf-based functional food industry in Indonesia was not developed; (ii) the development of mocaf-based industries was constrained by the high cost of cassava raw materials; (iii) the productivity of cassava plants was still low; (iv) the role of R & D institutions was very much needed; and (v) government intervention is needed.JEL Classification:  L88, O00, Q18

Abstract

This study emphasizes on the contribution of organic and chemical fertilizer application to arable land on Crop production in Cameroon”. The objective of this research is to determine the correlates of fertilizer application on arable land and determine their effects on arable land production as well as decompose the arable land effected by the application of organic and chemical fertilizer. The analysis method used was the instrumental-cum-control function model in Cameroon household consumption survey. The result shows that fertilizer is strongly correlating with arable land production. The magnitude of this effect is stronger in organic fertilizer than in chemical fertilizer. Besides, land size, professional training, average annual precipitation, the use of modern technology, male household head, urban residence and the cost of fertilizer are factors positively and significantly influencing the application of fertilizer on arable land in Cameroon. In terms of policy, this study recommends that the government of Cameroon should increase and subsidize the supply of Fertilizer to farmers given the right conditions. This is an essential booster of agricultural production in this era of food security.JEL Classification: Q12, Q18, Q20

Abstract

The research aims to describe Qardhul Hasan financing and recognize the problems faced in micro businesses in the city of Malang. The study was conducted on two research objects. The first study was on a used motorcycle dealer business that received Qardhul Hasan during the 2016-2018 period. The second study in 2019, was the implementation of Qardhul Hasan in small-scale creative economy traders, whose source of funding came from 2.5 percent of profits from used motorcycle dealers. The results showed that the implementation of Qardhul Hasan financing was quite profitable. Qardhul Hasan who is allocated to the creative economy group indicates a feeling of happiness and calm because loan repayments are not burdened with costs, besides having flexibility from the time of repayment. Economic actors managed to collect savings from repaying loan installments. Qardhul Hasan funding received a reasonably good response from economic actors. Qardhul Hasan loan recipients should be able to maintain trust and uphold the agreements that have been built. This study has implications for the development of Qardhul Hasan, namely strengthening the concept of Qardhul Hasan as loan financing, and strengthening groups for small businesses to run the Qardhul Hasan management mechanism JEL Classification:  D14, Q21, G51
