Abstract

Termite are known to infest building in the tropics, but in their quest for cellulose they may also cause signifi cant damage to crops and trees. They become pest only when their natural habitat is altered in some way by humans. Subterranean termite Coptotermes spp has been known as the most economically important structural pest in Indonesia. Due tomorphological ambiguity, traditional identifi cation of Coptotermes spp. has always been diffi cult and unreliable. In economic point of view, economic loss due to termite attack always increases every year, and in the year 2000 it is estimated to reach 373 million US$. Moreover, the social as well as ecological impact caused by termite attack should also be considered. In the capital city of Jakarta, the subterranean termite attack on home buildings reaches around 55%; while in Surabaya (East Java) 36%; and in Semarang (Central Java) 41%. Meanwhile, in some other cities, the subterranean termite attack on home buildings reaches on the average of 20%. The presence of termites in a region can depend on various factors, such as soil and vegetation type. Climatic features andwater avaibility play an important part in termite survival. Daily and seasonal changes in these factors also affect termite distribution. Keywords: characteristics, climatic, Coptotermes spp, attack impact.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was detecting green open space (GOS) spread and micro climate  condition  at Semarang Barat,   with  vegetation  spread  and  street  lane  area as  the  object  of  the  research. Population  characteristic  consisted  of  vegetation  area spread, mainly on the shaded  trees composition and micro climate condition by using  purposive sampling technique. The research used descriptive ecologycal approach. The result described that Semarang Barat vegetation spread is included as sparse vegetation, predominantly  by  squat  vegetation  composition with  infrequent  tree  density. Micro climate conditon is categorized as contented climate, but on edge at the daylight.  The condition  is  infl uenced  by  least  along  the  street;  consequently  the micro  climate  of temperature is high with low humidity.  Semarang Barat GOS is 17,1%, so the spacious should be 10,0% enhanced to gain 27,1% GOS to create a better climate. It is suggested to increase squat vegetation composition and quantity along Semarang Barat streets, so vegetation diversity will recovered. Keywords: green open space, micro climate, Semarang Barat

Abstract

The research aimed to compare caulifl ower growth and production planted at lowland and highland by using organic farming system. The research was single treatment experimentally, which was land height, consisted of highland (Kopeng) and lowland (Ambarawa). The variables were vegetative growth (leaves amount and plant weight) and generative development (fl ower initiation and fl ower weight). The data were analyzed by t-test. The result confi rmed that organic farming will make better lowland caulifl ower vegetative growth but least generative development compare to the highland one. It can be concluded that caulifl ower have the potency of being growth at lowland, even though with least yield. Keywords: lowland, highland, caulifl ower, organic

Abstract

The aim of this study was to measure the bird’s diversity at Karangasem Village, Wirosari District, Grobogan Regency mainly at the forest habitat, farm land and it settlements. The study was conducted on September until November 2008 used point count method. The data of birds species and its number analyzed by Shanon-Wiener species diversity index (H’), evenness index (E), dominance index (Di) and similarity index of Jaccardto describe the similar species of birds inter-habitat at Karangasem. The result indicated that there are 43 birds species of 22 families recorded at the location. About eight species among them are protected by the government, two among them included into CITES appendix II and one of them included into Vulnerable category of IUCN Red List. The birds diversity index and evenness index in the village of Karangasem ranges from 1.9 to 2.7 and 0.68 to 0.8. The highest and most dominant species are Collocalia linchi, Pycnonotus aurigaster, Lonchura leucogastroides and Lonchura punctulata. The analysis of Jaccard’s similarity index showed that the forests had more similarity to settlements than rice farming, which means there are high differences between habitats. There are differences in composition, structure, and featured bird species of the habitat, whichcaused low similarity index between the habitat ranges from 19.23% to 25.71%. Abstract

Analysis fingerprinting teak is supported by information about teak’s character molecularly. The information is gotten by analyzing 3 primary microsatellite in 46 teak samples that produce total 18 kinds of alel averagely 6 alel per locus. Genetics variety level is shown by Observed Heterozigosity (Ho), Expected Heterozygosity (He), Polimorfi sm Information Content (PIC) and Genetics Differentiation Coeffi cient successively 0.5122; 0.6221; 0.5818; and 0.0629. Kinship connection through dendogram analysis produces coeffi cient resemblance 0.3-1.00 that form 2 groups. However it has not shown inclination of forming group based on origin grows yet. Genetics differentiation analysis indicates different genetics in a population is higher then it is between populations. Analysis result has not found specifi c alel yet but has found 12 specifi c genotipe that is potential for analyzing fi ngerprinting if it relates to important useful genes.
