Abstract

Grammatical metaphor refers to the coding of meaning or experience in the manner as if the meaning or experience were coded by another lexicogrammatical coding.  Metaphorical representation implies that there are two manners of coding, namely the congruent or literal and incongruent or metaphorical coding.  Transgrammatical semantic domains extends meaning by a range of grammatical units.  Transgrammatical semantic coding implies that agnated meanings are realized by more than one semantic unit.  Grammtical metaphor representation inherently contains transgrammatical coding.  This paper addresses grammatical metaphor commonly used in texts of science, technology and academics, which are very difficult for Indonesian students to understand and translate into good bahasa Indonesia (BI).  By applying knowledge or competence of gramatical metaphor and transgrammatical semantic domain Indonesian students are expected to effectively learn the meaning of English text of science, technology and academics and to translate the texts into good BI.

Abstract

The thematic research on Jane Austen’s novels has been widely carried out, including marriage, gender, morality, politics, etc. The conception of community is also an important theme for her novels are set in a period when the notion of community is conceived and reinforced in the West. It is a transitional age that witnesses the change from the 18th century when the feudal aristocracy controls the agricultural economy to the 19th century which is dominated by the middle class as a result of the Industrial Revolution. However, the theme of community has not got enough critical attention and its research is sparse. Thus, this dissertation seeks to explore Austen’s contribution to the conception of community in Pride and Prejudice. Austen’s imagination of community is effectively displayed in Pride and Prejudice and conversation serves as a key approach. The Community is built at two levels, namely, familial level and social level. By means of conversation, a family bond based on mutual affirmation, which is the core of community building, is forged; and a community of spirit, the highest form of community, is established among social interactions outside families in two social spaces– Meryton and Pemburley. A stereoscopic vision of a community built by conversation emerges when the three levels are closely intertwined.

Abstract

The research is concerned with types of adultery based on the plot giving pictures of immoral behavior of some of the major characters committing adultery. Some of them are married, and some are not. They are brave and not ashamed of doing this immoral deed because they are not close to the doctrine of their own religion that prohibits them doing this shameful behavior. They do not even seem to be afraid of doing something which is regarded as a very sinful deed. Adultery is a sexual relationship in which a man or women has with another partner rather than his/her own spouse. Adultery is seen as a great sin in the society. Adultery maliciously interferes with marriage relations, and sometimes opens the door to divorce. (Dillon, 2016). The research is conducted using descriptive qualitative method designed to obtain information which is concerned with the current status of phenomena that occur naturally. (Ary, 1972). The results show that there are three types of adultery committed by the major characters: Visual, Mental and Physical Adulteries.

Abstract

Working collaboratively with peers is one of the aspects that define learner autonomy. Peer assessment is a growing solution for writers to get an improvement. It allows students to work socially since they will know strengths and weaknesses of learning. Regarding to previous related studies, peer assessment in writing encourages students to be active and take a part of their own writing progress with their peers. (Ashley Landry, 2014). Furthermore, peer assessment can contribute and trigger student’s autonomous learning. (Kulsirisawad, 2012). It is also viewed as another way of challenging students dependence on the teacher for feedback and guidance in their language learning to emphasize learner autonomy and cooperation to get students involved and learn as much from each other as they can from the teacher (Hamid Ashraf, 2015). In this research, the writer applied peer assessment in Writing I class by considering some beneficial effects over student’s writing proficiency within the autonomous learning context as the Writing I is the beginning writing course in English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. The aim of this research to investigate the process of autonomous learning situation through peer assessment in Writing I class and find out the outcome of peer assessment in Writing I class. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of consisted of 4 classes, consist of 119 students fourth semester. The instrument of collecting data is writing test.
